Issues setting up adhoc mode for Odroid XU4

Post by sourajitdas »

Hello

I purchased Odroid XU4's in bulk for a project along with the Wifi adapter 5A. I'm trying to set up the Odroids in ad hoc mode for my work. I have tried multiple ways to achieve it but none of them worked! I first followed the steps for a generic Raspberry Pi as per the steps shown in the link below. I could setup the SSID but I was not able to ssh into the Odroids.

Next I followed the guide for wpa_supplicant. The instructions were for Archlinux but I tried to improvise it for Ubuntu Mate 20.04 It helped to a certain extent as I was able to generate my own SSID. Unfortunately I was not able to obtain a IP using dhcp clinet. Also my SSID of the Odroid's network is not discoverable.

Is there any limitation for the Odroid to be setup in ad hoc mode? If no, Can up please help me with the steps to setup the Odroids in ad hoc mode. Thank you.

After my lengthy experiments with setting up WiFi all I can say is both wpa_supplicant and netplan are buggy as hell and most of the non-standard setups simply don't work.
I am pretty certain this has nothing to do with XU4, may be somehow related to possible limits of chip used on Wifi adapter. Not that I heard of any.

Thank you very much for your reply. Do you know of any non-standard setup to setup ad hoc mode for the Odroids?
Do you think switching to a different hardware may help?

I was looking for Raspberry Pi but there are no stocks with most of the dealers in US!

Nope, I'm done with wifi, and much prefer wired ethernet ever since. Faster, better, always works. ;)

I'd count on more help from someone else.

I've never used ad-hoc networking in linux. Is that still a thing?

I expect the drivers won't implement adhoc mode very well, because it's not used.

Is there any reason why you need ad-hoc mode?

You could achieve something relatively similar with 2* wifi adapters. Have one adapter as AP and the other as client. You can set AP mode with something like: https://github.com/lakinduakash/linux-wifi-hotspot
