ODROID XU Damaged PMIC?

Hi there!

I need help finding and fix my booting issues with one of my ODROID-XU (Rev 0.3). I've used it around 4 years without problems until one day won't boot up anymore and stucked in bootloops. I was afraid that my eMMC were corrupted, so i performed all steps shown in odroid wiki (https://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id ... hing_tools) for an microSD and eMMC with Ubuntu Server 14.04 (https://odroid.in/ubuntu_14.04lts/ubunt ... 714.img.xz) but no sucess. I gave up with it and continued working with another XU.

One year later i tried again to boot up with an image working on my "good" XU (Home Assistant Supervised (Hass.io) on ODROID-XU Arch Linux Kernel 5.8.0). The result was a sucess, so i hooked up the ethernet and tried to access through SSH when suddenly the XU IP dissapeared from my network, so i've checked it and ethernet port was still flashing and the LEDs status working as regular. As reconnecting the ethernet cable did not work out, i re-powered up the board, but this time no success with boot. No ethernet port link, no regular LED status blink. From that moment until now i've tried almost everything.

From the UART console i could find some issues with the voltages given by the PMIC logs at u boot startup.

My C0 reboots/boot loops/hangs on low voltage. Have you tried a different power supply and verified the power plug is clean and not corroded or something?

Hi there, Thanks for your fast reply! :D I have tried plugging the PSU of my working XU but no luck. My multimeter shows steady 5.35 [V] without load. I've measured the LDO output pin (correct 1.8 [V]) and output power pin (proper 5[V] reading) in CON10 pin header.

I'm going to take your advise and inspect the plug, and also try to read the output voltage of PSU during boot.

Try an Android OS image on the SD card to narrow down root causes. Change to boot mode to microSD and don't plug the eMMC module.

Both male and female plugs looks shiny with no rust on it :(

Thanks for the help! I've downloaded the file and checked its checksum that was same as provided so i flashed the microSD with BalenaEtcher which showed succesful flash. Then i have attached it with DIP switches OFF-ON position with no eMMC and then powered the board. Self install executed and finally started to boot.

Sadly, the result was the same. PMIC Voltages were below 1 [V] and got bootloop every 10 seconds. Worth notice that logs on PMIC Version were different between boots.

As i see, my problem is quite similar to Boot failure. Resets every 5 seconds and My XU can't boot.

Worth mention that sometimes my fan bearings are more or less unbalanced, producing low RPM and high torque. Maybe that could produced some current peaks but i think MAX14572 should handle them.

I think the last thing i could try is to buy another microSD, preferably higher grade (currently got a pair of kingstons cheap microSD, but both of them works on my other XU) just to discard some memory issues.

Lastly, i don't think if providing an image of my board would help at all. It seems normal with no burnout or damage visible to naked eye... I would suspect that has to do with buck regulators or something like that, not providing normal voltages during boot? The only reason i stiil no give up is because as i mentioned before, it booted twice after a lot of trial and error.

I don't think you have a problem with SD card nor eMMC.
But it is really hard to know which portion of the hardware or PMIC was (partially) damaged. :(
You can temporally disconnect the fan motor wires only for testing though.

I tried with fan unplugged but the result stills the same... Do you know how to disable the usb hubs on device file three or with u-boot commands at boot.in? I was thinking about it because in my other board logs shows something like "overcurrent condition" and maybe disabling it plus disabling hdmi.

I think i'm going to try finding shorted caps to narrow down faulty lines

I've checked this XU3 schematics and I think there is no way to disable the USB hub chipset LAN9514 with software. :(

Just in case i've cleaned the board with isopropylic alcohol but no results. I was looking at the PMIC diagram of XU rev0.4 pdf and according to it the VDD_XXX outputs should be 1.0 [V]. Have you encountered with other people having problem at the output of buck converters? In best cases i could replace the components instead of PMIC.
