SD -----> eMMC?

Unread post by Miltos » Wed Mar 19, 2014 5:43 am

Can I copy an 8GB Xubuntu image from my SD card to eMMC? Is it possible? or there is difference in the actual GB space?

Yes, using the Linux "dd" command or Win32DiskImager. There may be a slight difference in size between the media, which sometimes keeps Win32DiskImager from writing the image, but if you use "dd" you can get around the limitation.

You sure can!

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=/dev/sdX bs=1M of=/dev/sdY bs=1M && sync
where sdX is the Linux device name for the booted SD card which you want to copy from, and sdY is the Linux device name for the eMMC module to which you want to copy to.

No Rob he can't. Cloning a LIVE filesystem is a BAD idea.. Really bad..
The SD card will probably have only corrupt data.

Hmm, OK!

I guess you'll have to do it using another Linux distro as an intermediate step in order to copy it to an .img file.

Hi, I confirm that does not work : I used dd to create an image of a SD card
bearing a working installation (ubuntu_core + X + ROS stuff ...),
took care of the sizes difference, and write it on an eMMC module ...
the XU4 does not boot on it.
I am still trying to understand why that can not work and hoping to find a solution.
Any hint on this topic will be most welcome.
Thanks.
Eric

Try to run the emmc recovery to ensure the hidden bootloader blocks are ok. dd doesn't do that.
