XU4 low noise fan solution

Unread postby mrneilypops » Sat Aug 01, 2015 12:55 am

Noctua fan fitted as per XU3 thread;

viewtopic.php?f=93&t=11080

The same fitting instructions apply however the case does not close...
5mm gap sealed with scotch tape for now...I will probably order the cloudshell case soon...
fan and cable fit OK without any issue...enough space around the heatsink...

Silence is golden! 8-)
Especially with the XU3 fan control script;
https://github.com/nthx/odroid-xu3-fan-control

I had to modify;
Code: Select all
FAN_MODE_FILE="/sys/devices/odroid_fan.14/fan_mode"
FAN_SPEED_FILE="/sys/devices/odroid_fan.14/pwm_duty"

and change 'fan.14' to 'fan.13' for XU4

8-) keep up the great work hardkernel...I want another one! :D

EDIT: A few hours later and still COOL 8-) and QUIET 8-)

My cloudshell arrived today and simply using it as case for the moment.
The cool thing is the noctua low noise fan fits perfectly and is held securely in place by the case shell 8-)
I no longer have to seal the basic case with sellotape :D
temps remain mid fifties on average...

Hi,

here is my alternative solution for this which keeps the XU4 fitting in its case:

First, I cut off the supporting plastic from the "Noctua NF-A4 x10 5V" so only a small ring of plastic on top of the rotor remained (similar to the original fan):

This was done by a jab saw.

Second, I tried to get a spacer from the parts which were cut off, to get enough distance between the fan and the heatsink so the rotor could rotate. Also, I needed a washer because the screws from the new fan won´t fit and those from the original fan are so small their head slips through.
Then I realized that the screws are not long enough any more, so I went to a specialist screw store to buy some fitting ones:

So with this first try the result looked like this:

Unfortunately the case would not close. So I needed some thinner washers. That evening, I saw my kid playing with "iron-on beads" and realized I could create the washers out of them:

(picture taken after 7 seconds of ironing, level "cotton")

With that, the screws were still ~2-4 millimeters too high to let the case close easily. So I finally drilled some holes in the case so the screw heads could go through:

Sure, this could still be done better, but I´m satisfied with the solution for the moment.

Oh, one missing remark:
After following the steps above, the fan spins in the opposite direction as the original fan does.

But this does not seem to have any bad influence on the CPU temperature. I could still run "stress" with 8 or 16 threads for some minutes and the temperature stayed below 87°C. This is assumed to be ok as I saw in other posts.

Great post, but mate, why do we need to do this????????

If you haven't got an XU4, the fan sucks.
It sucks to the point that I wouldn't get another XU4 or recommend it for many applications.
The fan is just, well, noisy - and that effects what/where you can use the thing.

If what these guys are posting is correct then one of statements is likely true:
    Odroid have not tested the XU4 with the fan (I don't think that).
    Odroid don't care about fan noise (maybe).
    Odroid engineers got over-ruled by marketing for a cheaper fan (my guess).

I hate the fan on my XU4.
Why should I have to change it?

Do you know how to disable fan control information from syslog ? I found that these messages are from kernel but I do not know how to turn it off.

I went a different route with my xu4, i cut a hole for the fan on the case.

All i used was a dremel tool. the fan fits tight so i just pushed it all the way down. I had to pull the fan all the way through the top and use a paperclip and my fingers to fit the wires around the fan and pushed it all the way down to the original heat sink.

I'm not using any custom fan settings and it is quiet.

Doas anyone know the exact thermal resistance of the standard cooler for the XU4? Hardkernel guys?

Hello
I also changed the fan from the OdroidXU4 with a NF-A4x10 5V fan. I have a question about installing the fan in the right direction. At the picture below you see my fan on the OdroidXu4. Is this correct, or I have to turn the fan about 180°?
Best thanks for answering!

If you mount the fan on top of the original heatsink, it is a good idea to blow the air on the heatsink.

Sucking the air in is not so good, because the air is sucked through the surrounding (also at least warm) components before reaching the cpu.

This way round, the cool air is first going to the cpu, then to the surrounding area.

Pressure and speed should be equal on both sides

I installed Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX to my Odroid XU4 yesterday. When I firstly started the XU4 it seems to be everything is working well, the fan start spinning well, and when the CPU cooled enough, the fan stop spinning.
After when CPU temperature growing again, I can see that the fan struggling to spin up but could not start spinning. It seems that the XU4 fan pin have not enough power (maybe not enough ampere) to spin up the cooler. If I spin up the propeller with my hand, the cooler start spinning well again, but it must be do that at every times when the cooler stopped.

I tried to change settings under /sys/devices/odroid_fan.14 to force start spinning but it can not help:
Code: Select all
echo "0" > /sys/devices/odroid_fan.14/fan_mode
echo "0" > /sys/devices/odroid_fan.14/pwm_duty

wait for some second to cooler stop spinning and
Code: Select all
echo "255" > /sys/devices/odroid_fan.14/pwm_duty

At the last line, when I set maximum power to the FAN pins, the cooler struggling again, and fan start spinning only when I spin up the propellers with my hand again.

If somebody have any solution or any advice what I missed please help me.
Thank you in advance.

(By the way, the Noctua fan is really very quiet and with "golden" heat sink it is cooling enough the CPU as I found!)
Code: Select all
odroid@odroid:~# temp
sensor0 : 50000
sensor1 : 47000
sensor2 : 51000
sensor3 : 52000
sensor4 : 45000

UPDATED:
As I found here: http://noctua.at/en/catalogsearch/result/?q=a4x10 there are two version of Noctua NF-A4X10.
The FLX version (EAN: 4 716123 314691) is 12V but somehow 5V can spin this.
