ODROID-XU Server

Unread post by mdrjr » Sun Aug 04, 2013 2:09 am

Hello Guys.

To prove the stability and server usage of ODROID-XU I'm setting a nice challenge to myself.

You guys probably know my daily builds of ODROID kernels. Well.. I've moved all of this to my ODROID-XU

Last night kernel was already built on the ODROID-XU.

I'll also add ODROID-XU daily builds of the kernel to this same box.

Right now it runs a Ubuntu Server image (13.05 posted here) modded to work on -XU

I've implemented a UPS to power the board.. So it won't run out of power!
http://www.mdrjr.net/odroid/odroid-xu-battery

You can check the board status on: http://mdrjr.us.to:8901/
http://mdrjr.us.to:8901/phpsysinfo-3.1. ... sp=dynamic
http://mdrjr.us.to:8901/collectd/index.html
(some nice collectd graphs. Thanks to memeka :) )

This apache+php combo runs on the ODROID-XU itself!

PS: Take easy on accessing this site above.. it runs behind my home ADSL :(

Looks great!

Can you tell me the capacity of battery?
I want to estimate how many hour the UPS can keep the XU board running.

The battery specs are:

Li-Ion.

11.1V, 5.2Ah (57Wh).
This is the floating spec, it will always be at 12V while charging.
Its capable of 62W :)

Note:
Initial idea was to use a SLA 12V 26Ah battery. However I couldn't find a charger/psu for it on time..

Hi!it's a great idea the UPS,and i want to do the same!
I have a samsung laptop i disassembled today, take out the battery and opened it.battery is same than yours, colors, manufacturer, type of controller,etc..only specs are different.
It's with these specs:
samsung battery
Li-Ion
11.1 V 48Wh--4,4Ah

I have 2 questions:
1.Can you point me to a link or product name of the thing you use in the photo with in/out measurement?is it a boost converter, step up\down converter, buck etc etc?is it based of LM2596?what range in voltages and max wattage supported?
2.You left the controller in the battery pack i see..but how do you connected it?
thanks and very great idea!

The DC/DC Step-Down used is this one:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/5pcs-Lot ... 07687.html

I've left the board there, because you can still use the temperature probe that the battery has and that board is capable is cutting the battery power in case of battery overheat.

If your battery is like mines it has (2x (3x cells))

each cell is 3.7V and you need 0.4V extra to charge it.
So to charge the battery as a whole you need 12.3V.
My PSU can go only up to 12V. So ... My battery will never be fully charged.
But you are good to go with that ...

thanks for reply!yeah the battery is same,3cellx2.idid a research,yours are 3.7v,mine 3.6v,because my code is icr18650-22f,yours icr18650-26f
I think i have a free 12v PSU to use...i have to find a connector for XU,for not cut the original of the XU PSU.after that,i connect 5v in out of the boost converter to power of XU.then the +\- of battery pack in input of boost converter...and finally +\- of the 12v PSU in the input too.right?Does the 12v PSU requires certain Ampere to work right?i think i'd have a 12v 1A..but isn't it too low?what's yours?
Sorry for this stupid questions, but don't want to do bad things!

i don't know where to put +/- from 12v psu.i think here
| +\- battery pack
| /
| /
input step-down converter
output step-down converter
|
|
|
+\- odroid XU connector

Battery itself has 2 cables coming out of its extremes.
You connect the PSU directly to those.

Always check the output voltage of your PSU. some 12V psu's can even reach 13V and this will damage the battery.

ok it's clear now.my ic controller on batteries has b+ and b-,i connect the 12v there, leaving b1 ad b2 as is(b1 and b2 here are the 2 connectors in the middle of the controller.)
I have a spare step down converter(without voltmeter)i think i'll connect it between battery and 12v psu.i'll regulate it to exactly 12v to prevent voltage bump superiors to 12v;it has a potenziometer to do it.
Tomorrow i w'll order the boost converter, and when arrive i'll try all.thank you very much for the infos! :D

You have to regulate the output to 5V. ODROID-XU uses 5V

In the previous post i meant regulate to 12v the step down converter i'll put between 12v psu and batteries, instead the boost converter between batteries and odroid (the one with voltmeter)i'll regulate to 5v like you say.

I think he was worried by the reference to the "boost" converter as there are two main variants in switch mode designs "boost" which as the name indicate boost the voltage and "buck" regulators which reduce it.. Obviously going from 12V to 5V you would be using a "Buck" switch mode regulator.
Some more sophisticated designs offer buck/Boost and will go from lower to higher than supply voltages depending on what control voltage you set them to.

yeah you are right,i used wrong word.i meant the LM2596 Step-down Power Module....at home i have another one without voltmeter, and i'll use it also between batteries and 12v psu (at 12v regulated)

Well, inspired by your XU server, I decided to start monitoring my U2 server! :)

Though probably I will reboot now and then since changing the keyboard with my xbmc ir remote receiver sometimes crashes the kernel (I don't wanna use a usb hub).

I'm using collectd (http://collectd.org/) to get all the data (has over 90 plugins for collecting stuff, if you browse https://collectd.org/wiki/index.php/Table_of_Plugins you might find more stuff that you want to monitor). Plus, you can write your own scripts to gather data.

You can generate static graphs (like http://collectd.org/images/graph-cpu.png) with the included rrdtool program, but I wanted dynamic charts, so I wrote a perl script that formats the collected data in JSON, which is then charted by highcharts javascript library (http://www.highcharts.com). I made a "skin" for highcharts to look more like the static rrdtool charts.

With collectd you can actually grab data from many systems at once, but I don't know if there is an android daemon. So you would need to run in linux chroot, like I do :)

It would take a couple of hours to set it up on a linux system. Let me know if you want to :)

PS: of course, you can monitor Android as well though /proc, /dev etc... which are shared. That's how I'm monitoring Android XBMC :)

Now.. Today will complete 56 days!
But I have a dilema...

This weekend I'll be moving across houses.. So either I try to move it without unpowering it or I just power it off and move to new house and take the situation to enable the sensors and temperature monitor..

What you think?

Try to move the XU server with UPS...
Let's test your DIYed UPS. ;)

How long time do you need to move it?

DYI UPS failed!
In fact the Power Supply that I've used failed so bad.. I even got magic smoke.

What happen was: I've powered everything off.. Packages all my stuff..
But I've forgot the -XU there.. running ...
When I saw it (fan was spinning) I was like.. oh crap.. I've forgot it.. I've looked at the voltages and battery was at 9V already :(
So I connected it to the outlet to charge until the next day.. the power supply almost exploded a few minutes later.....

I'll use a proper power supply that can handle this setup working...

I've replaced the bad psu already.
Its working fine nowdays.

Its mounted on a cardboard box with a 10" hdmi display attached to it.

Working very well.. survived the last few days power outages.. including a 10 hour power outage that I had!
