Lubuntu 13.10 Whisper for ODROID-XU (20140222)

Unread post by robroy » Sun Feb 09, 2014 8:16 am

I created a minimal Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander image, forked from the official XFCE Hard Kernel release, with a core suite of applications for an energy-efficient netbook/desktop computer optimized for speed and performance.

Download the image here:
http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 222.img.xz

European mirror by @traxo:
http://odroid.txmonitor.de/

Keep your Whisper image updated:
Kernel updates: http://builder.mdrjr.net/tools/kernel-update.sh

Username: odroid
Password: odroid

Username: root
Password: odroid

Applications: Firefox, Chromium, Xine, Gimp, Transmission, Filezilla and Oracle JDK 8.

Autologin is enabled and boots directly to a single-user Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) running Xfce desktop.

If you enjoy my contributions to the Hard Kernel community, please consider donating an amount of your choice via the link in my signature.

Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
  • 1. Resize the "rootfs" partition to fit your SD card. This is best done on another Linux system using the GParted utility.
    2. Set your time zone using "sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata", or press the Up arrow in the Terminal window on first boot.
    3. Set your language using Preferences -> Language Support.
Improvements and upgrades:
  • 1. The kernel has an on-demand maximum clock frequency of 1.8GHz.
    2. Firefox has the IcedTea7 plugin installed for Java browser applets, and uses the built-in HTML5 player which is not compatible with Flash. Chromium has the Pepper Flash plugin installed for viewing Flash videos. Both Chromium and Firefox have the Adblock Plus add-on. The default browser is Chromium.
    3. All upgrades and updates have been run using aptitude, apt-get and synaptic.
    4. All orphaned and obsolete packages have been purged, including the original kernel.
    5. Lots of quality-of-life tweaks, such as setting folder preferences to List View, removing the Battery icon from the Status bar, setting the Chromium and Firefox preferences to their highest privacy settings, and installing wallpapers (/usr/share/wallpapers).
Features in this release: Notes:
  • This image boots to a desktop in 14 seconds, uses 150MB of memory, and requires only 3 GB of disk space.

Vino VNC server may be started via SSH by typing "vino" after enabling Desktop Sharing using "vino-preferences".

Optional USB and TFTP boot support is available with the updated bootloader by @suriyan (more here: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=2601)

XBMC for the XU doesn't run under X11, forcing you to exit the desktop if you want to watch movies :(

There is already a dedicated XBMC image for the XU, which boots directly into XBMC without starting the X11 desktop: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=2589

You can also compile and install XBMC by referring to the links provided here: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=2575

Due to time constraints, I'm willing to add XBMC to the community Whisper image if specific instructions are posted on compiling and installing it for Ubuntu.

For now, I included GXine which software-decodes any video like a champ. It's missing the plugins of XBMC but does provide smooth playback without having to exit the desktop.

Thank you for the troubleshooting!

I experimented with the Bluetooth adapter, and found there is a conflict between gnome-bluetooth and bluez. Once I get my Apple bluetooth mouse connected and working with Whisper, I will re-post the image.

Thank you for this very usefull image. It has proved its worth (Odroid Magazine, Issue 2: The art of multi-boxing...). However, I didn't manage to get the USB 3.0 OTG port working. I would like to add an external HD to the OTG port (the HD with its own power source) while the standard USB 3.0 A-type port is reserved to the gigabit ethernet device. Is this a kernel issue or am I missing some additional tinkering?

I haven't used the OTG port yet, but you could try searching for "OTG" in the Forum Search box to see if there is any information on getting it to work.

You can also try upgrading to the latest version of the kernel, as described in the March issue of ODROID Magazine.

Thank you for your help. I decided to use an additional self-powered USB 3.0 hub (Transcend) and leave the OTG-port alone (My understanding is finally that+ the OTG-port can`t work as a host).

Is it wise or even possible upgrade this Ubuntu 13.10 version to the brand new one 14.04 by using Ubuntu`s own software update programme?

Yes, follow the upgrade guide in the March issue of ODROID Magazine as well as reading the other 14.04 upgrade threads :)

I followed this advice and suceeded in upgrading my Whisper system to Ubuntu 14.04.

It was not possible to replace exynos5.conf file with the earlier one because this file (exynos5.conf) didn't exist anymore. The only file in this folder (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d) was exynos.conf. However, I didn't encounter problems with the HDMI-signal.

Desktop sharing utility is not anymore included in the Ubuntu 14.04, thus vino can't start the necessary vnc-server in the Whisper system. I managed to restore my two Odroids chain by installing a x11vnc programme into the Whisper system. And vino is not anymore needed to be started for the vnc-connection.

Excellent, thank you for the feedback! I will correct the typo in the magazine article to read "exynos.conf".

Hi guys,

I am trying this lubuntu image which indeed seems to run pretty well. Nevertheless I would like to disable the gdm autologin.
So I did the changes from /etc/gdm/custom.conf this way:

Code: Select all

[daemon]
# Enabling automatic login
  AutomaticLoginEnable = false
  AutomaticLogin = odroid
but I got a black screen after rebooting the XU!
I then also tried to comment these 2 lines, blank screen again!
I also tried to install lightdm, and again blank screen.

In conclusion, only the automatic login seems to work.

Any idea?
Fab

I will try it on my local copy and see if I can reproduce it. What does your Xorg.0.log look like?

Although Whisper is meant as a single-user login, here's what I did to convert it back to multi-user:

1. After commenting out the auto-login lines from /etc/gdm/custom.conf, I noticed that /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/exynos.conf was still there, which uses the ArmSOC driver instead of the default. This is fixed by typing:

Code: Select all

cd /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
sudo mv exynos.conf exynos.conf.original
2. I installed lightdm, and chose it as the default, since gdm won't show the login screen without first checking for 3D hardware acceleration  :

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install lightdm
3. The lightdm configuration already had the autologin set, so I commented the following lines from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf:

Code: Select all

#autologin-user=odroid
#autologin-user-timeout=0
After rebooting, I was able to see the lightdm login screen. Please let me know if this works for you.

Hi Rob,

I went quickly through the Xorg log files, and everything seems ok. No errors reported.
Additionnal information regarding my environnment: I took your image, did a kernel upgrade with the kernel-update.sh script, and upgrade to 14.04 following your guidelines from the Odroid mag.

Tomorrow, I will connect the serial cable I got from Hardkernel, and try to find out where someting is going wrong.

Nevertheless, this is the only issue I found from your image for the moment....

See my followup post, which is right before your last post, regarding how to fix the "black screen" issue. You should be able to diagnose everything via SSH.

Should work. All you need to do is edit boot.ini
Change the fb_x and fb_y res to 1280 800
and the vout to lcd

hi all

i flashed this image onto my XU EMMC card, and i just get a white line down the center of the screen, but the touch panel is working, as i can use it as a mouse. just have no display on the LVDS. i tried to edit all the applicable settings in the Boot.ini file, but still no dice. i am now re-flashing the xubuntu-13.10-desktop_armhf_odroidxu_20140104.img to see if my panel is even working properly, as i did get a display on the LVDS from this image. will report back with my results. seems odd that 2 images are not giving display on the panel, but are working over HDMI.

@RobRoy, can you confirm if this image is working on a LVDS panel? just to rule out a software problem?

Cheers

hi all.

ok, i can conform that

Code: Select all

xubuntu-13.10-desktop_armhf_odroidxu_20140104.img
is working properly with the LVDS panel, but am still yet to test if it was a bad flash with the screen blanking.

so, my results show that the Whisper image is somewhat incompatable with the LVDS. but i know nothing about how. i would love for this image to work, due to its incredibly low resource usage.

cheers

Jason

Edit: after reading the title of the file, i noticed that it is HDMI. that probaly has something to do with it. is this so @robroy? - sorry. :?

Yes it is set for HDMI. You may want to update the kernel using the http://builder.mdrjr.net/tools/kernel-update.sh script. It should be simple to switch to LCD using @mdrjr's instructions. I dont have an LCD to test, unfortunately.

Did you run the kernel-update.sh script with root privileges?

You can restore the previous bootloader files from the BOOT partition's "backup" folder. Just copy all of the files in the "backup" folder to its parent directory.

Re: Lubuntu 13.10 Whisper for ODROID-XU (20140222)

Unread post by AleksBak » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:52 pm

Dear robroy! Please say there is a kernel source and which folder they are? I'm trying to compile a module for RTL8812AU (USB 3.0 - WiFi). In version 3.14.91(14.04 LTS) I just cloned from Hardkernel GitHub the sources and compiled it in specific folder (then replace zImage etc.) and this WiFi module compiled and worked in Xubuntu 14.04. But in this case (your Lubuntu 13.10, 3.14.75) I do not know what to do. Thank you.

Very strange... In directory /usr/bin (in this image):

Code: Select all

find /usr/bin -name arm*
output:

The only other thing that I can recommend is to use the odroid-utility to update the image instead of kernel-update.sh. However @mdrjr may be able to give more advice on getting the LCD panel to work properly

You can use the updated 3.4 kernel that you've already compiled. If you absolutely need the 3.4.75 that's included with the image, use the github commit tag 89afccf8a33ee98679e8235aee5b957986158916 as mentioned in the original post.

It may be something that you need to install using apt-get.

Thank you very much for the wonderful response. However, I do not know how I can download so (with this commit tag). Then I need to read and learn about it. But it is better to use the new version probably? In this case? The interesting thing - it turns out that when building the kernel linker is not used?? Because kernel build itself passed without any errors. (zImage size slightly smaller than the original again) But compiling source wireless module gave no linker error.

I'm not sure how to compile the wireless module for your specific model. You may want just copy the kernel that you already compiled to the Whisper image, including zImage, uInitrd, and /lib/modules.

so, does that looked like it succeeded? the line cp: cannot stat â/tmp/Kupdate-LATEST/boot/zImage.lcdkitâ: No such file or directory seems like an error of sorts.

I used to have the LCD but the connector broke on me a few months ago. So I wont be able to test the LCD output. Perhaps someone can post a working boot.ini for the LCD panel. Yoy might also need to modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

IIRC, try changing fb0 to fb1 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Hi,
I grabbed the image, unpacked it onto an SD card and booted from it --- but see no HDMI output.

Code: Select all

xzcat Lubuntu-13.10_Whisper-XU-HDMI.20140222.img.xz | dd obs=4M of=/dev/mmcblk0
I see two issues during boot, both to do with the GSC: There's an oops possibly because there isn't a video capture device attached to the odroid, and the mixer says the firmware isn't present.

The Oops: (I've truncated it a bit)

I just redownloaded Whisper XU the other day and don't have any video issues with HDMI. The errors that you mentioned are just warnings.

Are you able to SSH into the ODROID?

I recommend verifying your downloading using the MD5SUM file, which is located in the same directory as the download. Also, try using dd bs=1M instead of 4M.

The case also sometimes gets in the way of creating a solid connection between the XU and the HDMI cable.

Using the arch linux image, I get HDMI output.at 1080p@60Hz. Using any Ubuntu or Debian based image I get a black screen on the monitor, although it reports it's being driven at the correct resolution. The Lubuntu image md5 sum is correct.

I can log in on the serial console, and via ssh. I can see that X is running, but Xorg.0.log looks a little odd: it tries to load the armsoc driver, then eventually unloads it and switches to fbdev. /dev/dri doesn't exist.

I'm pretty sure the root and boot filesystems are correct --- fsck reports no errors on the root fs after a new unpack. I'm assuming that the image contains the right bl[01] trustzone and u-boot firmware?

ps shows an openbox session running.
And I can do:
{code}
odroid@odroid:/root$ DISPLAY=:0 xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1920 x 1080, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1080
default connected 1920x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1920x1080 60.0*
{/code}

Have you tried re-flashing the image? HDMI works properly when I download the same file from the US site onto an SD card. I just tried it again this morning.
