maybe last message?
bit disappointed with amlogic, and will probably avoid their plagued hw in the future, and so with the discovery of finding that there are no supported os's with active development, i debate chucking this what cost 3 digits, n2-plus brick into the ocean. this will probs be my last message

Re: maybe last message?
It's been about 15 months since you joined our forum, and your first post is quite impressive.
I wonder what you expected in the last 15 months and what specifically disappointed you. Can you tell me before your N2+ goes deep in the ocean?

Also, throwing stuff into the ocean is bad for the ocean! I highly advise against it!

That's just not accurate about no development.

Re: maybe last message?
I am aware this is more a dev board then even the raspberry pi, but the community here is very fragmented, and it shows in what you can actually do with the board, if I wanted the full feature set of the board, I imagine I would need a nas for all the images, and netboot. As the hw acceleration is in a sorry state with mainline, whats with not refactoring the mate desktop to use hw accel, and have a safemode video boot... If you can't find a way to get all the hw acceleration code playing nicely, I would suggest looking into some way of contain-ering and virtualizing the conflicting packages, so its not loaded in the main system scope?.
If I wasn't to go the way of netbooting, I would want hard Hardkernel to get more partners to stock and retail their products, while amazon has a few items... most are marked up quite a bit.
Ideally,
I should be able to goto my local supplier, ie Memory express, Canada computers, or Lees electronics(local indie electronics store), SMI electronics for the very least the addon storage emmcs, and peripherals, as importing from the US can be slow and tedious. So more redistributors in more nations would be a good start, one of the reasons r pis became so popular, is that you could pick one up locally at a store. made for easy Christmas shopping for our non techy relatives and friends.

Hardkernel isn't so large to find their stuff in a local market, I'm sure they would love it

Re: maybe last message?
I think it's the distributors who choose what they are selling, and there's nothing stopping them from distributing Odroid SBCs and accessories. Perhaps you could have talked to the manager of your local shop and ask them about this possibility.
I prefer gathering a bunch of locals and ordering stuff straight from HK together, it's much cheaper. So cheap in fact you could get additional eMMC modules or whatever and not bother shopping for them later.
As for HW video acceleration, as a rule of thumb Android always has better support (the actual target OS of many SoCs).
But the Odroid community doesn't tend to leave anyone behind with their problems, so possibly if you wished to try and engage in conversations, ask questions and state your concerns, your experience could have been improved.
Yes the community is small but dedicated.

Re: maybe last message?
The Odroid community, while strong, is very small comparatively so I agree more "impulse buying" of Odroid products would grow the community. A North American sales rep who's not a retailer would go a long way (in this hemisphere) towards boosting sales, making cold calls and surprise visits.
Internally, Hardkernal could establish more of a presence on platforms like YouTube as well.
In this case I think the OP may have been happier with an H3, since it would have been more mainstream computer like.

Re: maybe last message?
I would absolutely love to find a media partner that I could work with to show off some of the R&D I do that never sees the light of day.
For example, has anyone ever played "Uncharted: The Nation Drake Collection" on ODROID-GO Ultra? I have! The hardware involved a XU4 with a micro-controller connected to a PS4. The XU4 captured the HDMI output and streamed it to the GO Ultra using the tech developed for GO-Advanced multiplayer. The micro-controller translated the GO Ultra ultra gamepad to an emulated USB PS4 controller. The goal was a universal streaming device that could stream a PC, PS4, XBOX, TV, etc. to any ODROID SBC. So what killed the project? At the time the XU4 was just barely capable of doing the trans-coding in realtime, and the GO-Ultra did not have enough input (touch, accelerometer, buttons) to make it as "friendly" as I would like. As of today, the ODROID-M1 is more than up to the task, but too "heavy" (size, cost) for wide adoption as a dedicated appliance.
To bring things back on topic, its not that there isn't a substantial amount of work being done by developers everywhere for ODROID products. The issue is that it does not make enough "noise" to eclipse the "spam" being generated by other "fruit" SBC markets.
[edit]
P.S. For anybody wondering, I am also keeping a very close eye on Switch emulation.

Re: maybe last message?
In specific conditions, xu4 can do realtime hardware encoding. Except I don't know if you can reduce the buffers so much that it doesn't introduce too much lag...

I'm guessing with a USB capture device, I can't think of another way.mctom wrote:XU4 can do that?

Re: maybe last message?
I absolutely agree, my choice to buy my first Odroid wasn't a coin toss (that's how I make life decisions though), I did months of reading online before I bought my XU4. After I made the decision I remember thinking it should have been more obvious from the start.crashoverride wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 9:57 amits not that there isn't a substantial amount of work being done by developers everywhere for ODROID products. Re: maybe last message?
Yes, its using a USB capture device. There are many low cost adapters available. Since they are low cost, they are USB 2.0 (even though some are advertised as 3.0). This means that the data is compressed with MJPEG. The XU4 hardware JPEG decoder is not fast enough to do 1080p@60, so I had to use the CPU instead.

Re: maybe last message?
Same here, I bought N2+ after a really long multi-factor analysis and I knew that was the best choice for my application at that time, even without knowing I could have got it much cheaper directly from HK.L67GS wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 7:44 pmI absolutely agree, my choice to buy my first Odroid wasn't a coin toss (that's how I make life decisions though), I did months of reading online before I bought my XU4. I think the problem is a well solidified common belief that RasPi is a synonym of SBC, thus everything else is a knock off. This is considered so obvious that many journalists repeat this myth, including multiple youtube "tech gurus".
Not much can be done about it in my opinion.

Re: maybe last message?
One glaring problem I've noticed is a lot of Pi folk expect things should just work and when they don't will tell anyone who will listen how bad a non-Pi SBC is because of it.
They have no understanding of the device nor care to, they want hand holding from step A to Z and if anything goes wrong it's someone else's fault.
