AMD Ryzen Mobile odroid board ?

Unread postby nobe » Fri Nov 03, 2017 5:16 pm

here is my latest idea to share with you guys.
What about making an AMD Ryzen Mobile based odroid board ?

if hardkernel still consider releasing a x86 board, it would be a very interesting option :
- their default tdp is 15w and it's possible to limit it down to 9W (dealing with cooling should be more or less the same than with xu4)
- they should be powerful in both cpu and gpu side
- gpu is opensource
- i also think there already is hardware & software support for both opencl & vulkan
- not sure how expensive it would be though.

what do you guys think about this (bold?) idea ?

edit:
i'm not alone :p

I don't know much about Ryzen, but it's just a cpu+gpu, not a system on a chip. It would need a lot of other things (network, usb, pcie?) that would make it more complex and expensive to build.

as far as i understand, those APUs also pack things like vpu, memory controller & most I/O controllers (usb, sata, pcie lanes)
i don't think this would be more complex to build than with an intel cpu (which was evaluated/planned by hardkernel some months ago)
and yes, such a board would probably be quite expensive, but if the board price can stay under something like 200€, i'd still be interested (though i fear this could be the price of the APU itself -_-)

I would buy this one as well. I understand it would be more expensive than your typical ARM board.

Also, it would also be interesting as a home/SOHO router board, specially if it had a PCI to add more NIC's.

I don't know how relevant is to the AMD Ryzen. There could be issues with security. https://youtu.be/5mNJpttYpu8
