HDR support on Odroid platforms

Post by jalcaid001 »

Hi,

From other threads, it seems C2 cannot support HDR
IS there an Odroid box that can do it? With Kodi?

TIA

ODROID-C4 would be good option to enjoy HDR and CoreELEC is the best platform for Kodi.

Do you know if the C4 supports HDR10+? The N2/N2+ does and it's the only alternative to Dolby Vision that looks just as good.

I've never tested it on the C4 since I use it headless.

I believe C4 can support HDR10+, but...not sure since I have no TV which litterally shows HDR10+ contents is playing. But AFAIK, C4 supports better color tones/mappings than S922X with ODROID-N2/N2Plus. I believe CoreELEC guys must be more familiar with this for sure. :)

Yeah I've heard the C4 does HDR to SDR properly, the N2 certainly does not but since my TV is 4K HDR it's not an issue.

I need to test the C4 with Kodi :)

Please share how it work with your TV, I am not fan of watching TV but ODROID-C4 would be more than decent for TV box.

So are you saying that N2 does it for sure, but C4 (despite being a inferior platform) perhaps can do it even better?

I don't understand your comments about HDR to SDR mapping. I have a 4k tv with an odroid-C2. I can see 4k w/o HDR, so I guess I'm getting SDR colors?

The N2/+ can do HDR to SDR tone mapping but the colors don't look exactly right, this only matters if you don't have an HDR capable TV and are watching HDR content. The C4 does a better job at tone mapping HDR to SDR, the N2/+ is better in every other way.

The N2/+ can definitely do HDR10+, I was just asking if the C4 can also do HDR10+ but you won't find many TV's which support it. I have one of the few TVs which supports HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG so I can compare the high dynamic range of each and I've come to the conclusion HDR10+ is as good as Dolby Vision to my eyes and the N2/+ supports it which is why I use it.

I will check today if the C4 also does and report back.

I tested CoreELEC on the C4 and it's very nice, HDR10+ indeed works on it.

I believe the colors are a bit better vs the N2+.

If anyone is looking for a media center there is no need to go with the N2+ as the C4 performance and visual fidelity is great.

I also checked the HDR to SDR tone mapping and it's awesome on the C4, not only better than the N2+ it's perfect.

Kodi Netflix add-on worked fine up to 1080p resolution streaming on the C4 CoreELEC.
But, I don't think it can handle any UHD nor HDR stuff properly.
