forum (new) articles feed

Post by fvolk »

Is there a way to get a feed of new/modified articles in this forum, without logging in?
I don't know phpBB, but webscraping probably will not make Hardkernel happy considering server load...?

Sorry to say, but looks awful to me.
But where they do get their feed of articles from?

I'm with you, tapatalk failed to impress me so I didn't learn much about it in my 5 minutes of experience.
I was under the impression it showed new posts though.

For context,
reading the H2(+) subforum is ok as new posts are easily visible if one checks in once a day viewforum.php?f=167
reading the C4 subforum never worked well as soon after C4 release the sticky topics crowded out the new active topics viewforum.php?f=200
and there is also https://old.reddit.com/r/ODroid/new/
and.... other sources somewhere? (I don't know about ;-)

So the most efficient would be to crawl all these sources and just render a personal "new articles" view locally, according to my preferences.
As the lockdown situation will surely continue this sounds like a year's end vacation programming project.
Reddit has an API to retrieve the feed, phpBB has.... I don't know?
Continuous webscraping is impolite to the server owner - but as Odroid forum is not ads financed, it is only a question of server load?

Well, the phpbb smartfeed plugin (https://www.phpbbservices.com/smartfeed/) allows you to create rss feeds for subforums, and also just to show you unread topics for your account, that you could follow with a rss reader. That would be better than scraping.
I don't think scraping is impolite, just inefficient (but necessary at times). Let's see if they want to enable the plugin first...

How would it know if they are new unless you are logged in?

My advice is just login and use:

search.php?search_id=unreadposts

search.php?search_id=active_topics

I'm guessing the active topics link is disabled unless you are logged in for a reason, likely to mitigate abuse potential.

But you could use this to accomplish it but you would still need to configure it to use credentials:

The smartfeed plugin requires you to be logged in, select the forums you want and generates a url linked to your account. I used it on a different forum and I could load it in my rss feed.

But this needs to be enabled server side right?

My advice is just login and use:
Due to bad experiences, being logged in on one site as a user and then being tracked over different sites - some "coincidences" were surely not by chance - I got into the habit of regularly clearing my cookies and site data in browser, or using private browsing windows. This also means I'm not logging in every time, but instead set a browser bookmark to a subforum and check once a day or so, and this causes stuff to be overlooked, depending on the level of misfeatures/misdesign of current webforums. That's why I'm really now considering to write a personal aggregator.
Sorry for the noise, just random "sitting in lockdown" ideas...

I'm the same way. I clear cookies and cache, use duckduckgo, use gmail sparingly and absolutely no Facebook. But this is a small privately owned forum with no advertising of any sort, forums like this are completely comfortable to me.
