so i found some 2 gig sticks ddr3 ram 1333 and made it into 12 gig 8+4 just using the onboard hdmi for now
streams quite nice..surf`s fine quite responsive...

less hardware for the power supply to run i guess...
using a cs-550 corsair supp and the 555 clocked to 3 gig..

it`s running quite nice..the 4170 air blower 4 pipe cooler and it runs around 50 deg C..
thinking of using a liquid cooler on it if the blower cannot hold it under 50 so far so good

The only PC I use is an old i7 Latitude laptop, probably about the same age as that Phenom.

It was $1700 when new so I just can't bring myself to get rid of it while it still works perfectly, albeit a bit slow. I can't sit at a desktop, it feels too much like work.

It's been a week since my Jack Russell's vet told me to buy shock collars for dogs since Blake won't stop barking. He has undergone training but he won't stop making unnecessary noise that even my neighbors get annoyed and mad. I can't even focus on my programming job.

Shock collar is a tough call, but if your dogs won't stop barking you have little choice.

Something you can try.

Shut the power off in your house, perhaps there is something electrical making sounds driving them to bark. If they stop with the home power shutdown you need to find the item making the noise.

What is the top frequency that dogs hear? Perhaps a frequency analyzer with a top end mike can do the job...

I'm not sure but I believe even a cell phone microphone can detect sounds we can't hear.

Thanks for the tips guys, I really do appreciate it. I will try it, to see if dog shock collars will work or not, I will also seek help from a professional dog trainer if I won't be able to resolve it on my own.

This reminds me of my now passed away dog. He was constantly barking in the old place and after we moved it suddenly almost completely stopped. I guess something was making him uneasy or something in the old apartment. It never occurred to me that it might be sounds that we couldn't hear.

You know they use sound as a torture device. Since a canines hearing is far beyond humans something like a high pitched whine from a ballast to a florescent light fixture could be torturous to a dog.

Could be simple bad behavior but best to rule out everything.

I hope you feel better mate. I was just discussing how I can no longer sleep 8 hours, I'm lucky if I get 5 hours a night. Seems like it started around 40, guess it's down hill from here.

Being somewhat younger I would say not needing 8 hrs of sleep is a good thing - the extra time can be dedicated to other activities (reading, surfing, etc). But I guess the deal is you sleep less, but you feel more tired, right?

For me, at around 2 PM I hit a brick wall and want to take a nap. I don't of course but it would be nice :)

So yep, less sleep more tired.

Taking the family as well, or going solo?
Enjoy your time off!
Today I skipped worked with the missus, left the kids with the nanny and we're enjoying a relaxing day at the pool...
I couldn't make it without technology though...
The nice thing is you'll have the time to meditate about various problems and without interruptions you'll get better ideas!
Also, your employees will have the time of their life with the boss on leave :D

Sup, niggaz. :D

I was looking over the Odroids pages, like the C2's one, and noticed in the comparison tables with RPi, its SD card maximum interface capabilities are overestimated a little. Because it's shown there as SDR25. But what it does support at maximum is not SDR25. It is HS - a so called "high speed".
The excerpt from the SD specification (bolded by me):
• Bus Speed Mode (using 4 parallel data lines)
(1) Default Speed mode: 3.3V signaling, Frequency up to 25 MHz, up to 12.5 MB/sec
(2) High Speed mode: 3.3V signaling, Frequency up to 50 MHz, up to 25 MB/sec
(3) SDR12: UHS-I 1.8V signaling, Frequency up to 25 MHz, up to 12.5MB/sec
(4) SDR25: UHS-I 1.8V signaling, Frequency up to 50 MHz, up to 25MB/sec
(5) SDR50: UHS-I 1.8V signaling, Frequency up to 100 MHz, up to 50MB/sec
(6) SDR104: UHS-I 1.8V signaling, Frequency up to 208 MHz, up to 104MB/sec
(7) DDR50: UHS-I 1.8V signaling, Frequency up to 50 MHz, sampled on both clock edges, up to 50MB/sec
(8) UHS156: UHS-II RCLK Frequency Range 26MHz - 52MHz, up to 1.56Gbps per lane.

HS is the fastest legacy speed mode (4-line, up to 50MHz, thus up to 25MB/s), but it uses 3.3V signaling. SDR25, on the other hand, is a UHS-I mode and has 1.8V signaling. Having the same speed, SDR25 is more power efficient. RPi obviously doesn't support UHS-I. This thing - UHS-I state of support on SBCs - has tired me so much lately. This is why I'm so sensitive. :D Anyway, it would be nice to fix that, not giving to the presumptuous competitors features they don't really have. :D And I am so grateful, that Odroid boards seem to be one of those few having UHS-I implemented properly. :)

Sounds kind of great, but not the right thread to post regarding ODROID-C2 and UHS thing. Could you please move your post to ODROID-C2, maybe your own thread?

My home server is based on an ASRock D1520D4I motherboard. It has been been running for 3 years straight and that means the CPU fan has done about 10.5 billion revolutions. It won't make it to 11 billion since it is starting to make some horrible noises now. In a regular desktop I would normally buy a a heatsink and fan combo but in this system the Xeon D-1520 is in an FCBGA 1667 mount. That means it is attached directly into the motherboard and not in a socket on the motherboard. Even a small mistake while attaching a new heatsink could destroy the CPU and motherboard. So, I need a new fan. The problem is that I am having trouble finding one that will work.

My current fan is an Everflow R125010BU(8), 12v, 0.32A, 6800rpm with a 3 pin power connector. It measures 50mm squared and 10mm tall. I can't find any US based retailer that sells it or any other fan with the same shape that can match the rpm's and airflow. I did a little test to see what a 4500rpm fan (Evercool EC5010M12CA) would do and I was shocked to see that under load it couldn't hold the CPU below 70C. Temps were between 74C and 77C and the CPU has 80C listed it's maximum operating temperature. With the stock fan running F@H or Prime95 the CPU never got above 65C. I am too scared to run either one with a 4500rpm fan.

A fan that was taller might have a higher air flow at a lower speed because the fan blades would be bigger. The only problem I can see is that the screws to mount the fan on the heatsink would need to be longer but have the same threading and diameter as the current screws.

I can't make up my mind what to do next. Anybody have experience with this sort of thing?

I was looking at that earlier. It spins at 5500rpm which means it would do better than then 4500 I tried, but since I am not sure what the air flow rating of the stock fan is I can't guess how close it will come. Most of the 10mm high fans I have looked at have an air flow rating of 8.5-10 CFM. The 15mm and 20mm fans are rated for 12-18 CFM. If I bought one of those I would almost definitely need to find a new way to secure it to the heat sink. I have thought of using zip-ties but I an not sure if that would work.

I have done a little more reading and I think zip ties will work out if I use a 60mm fan. Check out this pic and tell me what you think.

I can lay the fan on top of the heatsink and run the zip ties through the areas marked in red and over the top of fan. Going with a 60mm fan will make sure I have the air flow I need. Not only that but it is very easy to find a 60mm PWM fan with the four pin connector. With a PWM the fan will not run at full speed 24/7 and hopefully last longer.

It looks like zip ties would go under that bracket allowing you to secure something larger.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If I used this fan:

https://www.coolerguys.com/collections/60mm-fans/products/everflow-60x60x25mm-dual-ball-bearing-pwm-fan-f126025bu

It would be just a little bit smaller than the outer edge of the heat sink. It has a good air flow and the highest static pressure of all the fans I have looked at today. At full speed it will make a bit more noise than the stock fan did but it won't be worse than my desktop PC. I'll order it soon and post some pics and numbers when it's up and running.

The new fan arrived tonight and I have pictures and numbers as promised.

First off the pics show the 50mm 4500rpm fan I was using as a short term replacement:

fan1.jpg
My first try at a replacement fan. It sucked.

Next the stock fan beside the fan I just got today:

fan1-fan2.jpg
Don't worry Little cousin, Big cousin is here.
fan1-fan2.jpg (195.09 KiB) Viewed 454 times

Finally the new fan mount to the heatsink with zip ties:

fan2mounted.jpg
My zip ties were just a little too wide for the screw holes so I had to trim them down with scissors
fan2mounted.jpg (226.53 KiB) Viewed 454 times

As for the numbers: I like them!

Idle Temps

Stock fan: 40C at 6800rpm
Lame 50mm fan: 50C at 4500rpm
New 60mm fan: 45C at 1800rpm

GCC compiling GCC

Stock fan: 55C to 60C at 6800rpm
Lame 50mm fan: 74C to 77C at 4500rpm
New 60mm fan: 50C to 60C at 4000rpm to 4600rpm

Prime95 (Well, mprime since it's Linux)

Stock fan: 62C to 65C at 6800rpm
Lame 50mm fan: I didn't try it because I new it couldn't handle it.
New 60mm fan: 62C to 67C at 5000rpm to 5600rpm.

Edit: A shout out to Josh! He is the customer service rep I talked to at Coolerguys about fans and some other ideas. He is even trying to find the stock fan and get it in their catalogue.

@phaseshifter: I'm guessing a link to "Don't worry, be happy" won't help much, but maybe this helps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJUhlRoBL8M

We have to wait until we really feel it's time to do something important.

So I ended up ordering a tplink tl-sg108 switch and will be trying the H2 as a PFSense box, it's been quite a few years since I last used PFSense.

I'm not sure my network is complicated enough to require it but that's the fun of it I suppose. Maybe 22 devices in total.

Will use a Linksys EA7500 as my AC wireless access point, it's quite good, really it's powerful enough to run my network alone.

I have a TL-SG 108E myself. I'm happy it has management and supports vlans - it allows you to have more complicated setups, like "router on a stick" or to distribute iptv around the house.

If you're using munin I wrote a plugin to monitor port state and number of packets (too bad it doesn't support snmp): https://github.com/munin-monitoring/con ... link/tl_sg

I didn't get the E version, it's unmanaged. I don't need vlans and can't justify the additional cost of the managed version. I wanted it but don't need it currently.

That's a nice munin plugin, I have been known to use it but not currently.

I don't need PFSense but it's something to play around with.

Have fun then. If you have a screwdriver and open the switch up there might be a way to turn it into a managed switch :)
Or a brick :D

One would need to compare pcb images of both models to spot if there's a hardware difference. If there's not, it might be enough to reflash the nand where it stores its boot rom.
