ODROID XU4 vs ODROID C1+ as a Downloadserver/NAS

Unread postby M!ndFr34k » Tue Mar 13, 2018 11:54 pm

Hello,

i want to create a Downloadserver/a NAS but i cant really decide which one is a better candidate for this task.

My idea:
- Using a Odroid as a Downloadserver (with JDownloader2, so unzipping files is a important thing) and OpenMediaVault as OS and NAS software (with a USB 3.0 4TB External HDD attached to it)
- Connecting my RPI3 (with Kodi and Plex Server on it) to the NAS, so the NAS does not need to convert stuff
- Copying stuff between NAS<->PC

Important for me is also (i am open for other options):
- Low Power Consumption in IDLE (its going to be the most time in idle i think)
- Acceptable unzipping speeds (idk if it makes such a huge difference between USB 2 and USB 3 while unzipping because i think the perfomance of both boards is not that great for this?)
- Good bang for the buck for specifically this (and only this) task
- GBit Ethernet Port(200 Mbit Internet connection atm, soon maybe 500Mbit + Gbit LAN speeds)

My favourite atm is the C1+ since i dont know if it makes such a huge difference while unzipping files via USB 2 or USB 3 and transfering files over the Network.

Thanks in advance

Question:

Do you need RAID or not?

I'd personally go for the ESPRESSObin since it has a dedicated NAS Marvel Dual-Core SOC specifically aimed at NAS tasks and eSata + USB3 connection (https://www.marvell.com/embedded-proces ... mada-3700/).

If you're speaking about a Download-Server you will most likely run OpenMediaVault or similiar with natively encrypted AES storage so that no one can mess with your data (just saying ;)).

And regarding AES support ESPRESSObin's SOC actually outperforms the XU4:

Otherwise ODROID HC1/2 depending on the size (2.5 or 3.5) of your drive since their frame acts as a massive heatsink so you get less issues in 24/7 mode (important!).

I dont need RAID, the data i wanted to store on it are just.... lets call it "local security copies" of my collection :)
AES encryption is a nice2have but no must have
The Espressobin sounds pretty good same as the HC2, did not know those two existed.
Do you know the power consumption of those 2?
The HC2 seems to have a consumption of around 5W with a HDD in it, which seems pretty decent for me but i cant find anything about the Espressobin.

As far as I could find it should be around <1W without the HDD:

http://espressobin.net/tech-spec/

So basically you could look at using a solar panel in case there is a power-outage together with a small battery as UPS to shut down your system.

Heh. HC2 is more aimed at general software, as such it is more powerful at different tasks you throw at it (e.g. media streaming, kernel compiling, ...). The ESPRESSObins Marvel SOC is optimized for specific tasks only (but also stays a lot cooler).

But you might want to research a bit about them yourself to make your own decision. :)

Yeah i will look after both boards.
They are a better alternative for my task than the C1+ or XU4.

Thank you very much for your help! :)
