I performed the procedure to recover the eMMC card and got the android on my monitor; removed the eMMC card and flashed ubuntu-18.04.3-4.14-mate-odroid-xu4-20190929.img with Balena Etcher on the eMMC card.
Put the card on my XU4, powered up and waited for a long time; did not get image on the monitor and red and blue led remain solid.
As I got the android working, I presume both XU4 and eMMC card are OK.
What is going wrong here?
I would appreciate support to get ubuntu running.

Don't extract .xz file if you use Etcher.

If the Android OS boots successfully, you can install other Linux OS images on the eMMC later.
I have a question, once Android has been loaded, how do I install the images on the eMMC?
Do I need the UART-USB connector, the SD-eMMC writer or it can be done via the Android interface?
Thanks.

Once android boots from emmc, you can be sure the emmc has the correct bootloader flashed in the hidden sectors.
Next, you connect the emmc to the sd-emmc card, connect it to a different computer and use etcher to write the image you want (linux/android/whatever). This flashing process does not overwrite the hidden sectors, because they aren't exposed.

I am working with Odroid XU4 emmc
So after successfully booting with Android OS, if I realize I need to get back an important file that I didn't backup, is it possible to recover that file from emmc? Please suggest if any alternatives
Thank You!

If it was deleted, you can try to attach the emmc to a card reader in a PC (so that it's not used) and run photorec to try and recover deleted files. Based on file type/fragmentation/trimming you might get it back (or not)
