[GUIDE] Install JDK8 on Ubuntu

Unread post by Hamiko » Fri Mar 01, 2013 3:19 am

Download JDK8 from here. Press first accept, than Download:
http://jdk8.java.net/fxarmpreview/
Unpack it:

Code: Select all

tar zxvf jdk-8-ea-b36e-linux-arm-hflt-29_nov_2012.tar.gz
Copy it with

Code: Select all

sudo mv jdk1.8.0 /usr/lib/jvm
Useful? Didn't know that, maybe you want to skip that and "install" the JDK.

Code: Select all

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.8.0/bin
"Install" JDK8

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/javac javac /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.8.0/bin/javac 1
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.8.0/bin/java 1
sudo update-alternatives --config javac
sudo update-alternatives --config java
java -version
Ready.

The download location has moved (took me a while to find it). It can now be found at:
http://jdk8.java.net/download.html

Using Ubuntu 13.04 and "jdk-8-ea-b100-linux-arm-vfp-hflt-24_jul_2013.tar.gz" I was able to get the HWBOT Prime Benchmark (.jar file) working, using the above instructions.

I am confused a bit about the download source.

Isn't this source what we need?

Thanks!

As I was lurking in the Oracle site somewhere it was mentioned, IIRC, this file is updated October 2014.
I installed it right now

Code: Select all

root@odroid-server# java -version
java version "1.8.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_06-b23)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.6-b23, mixed mode)
root@odroid-server#
and will report if any problems appear.

Found a way of installing Java8 by PPA repository:
http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/install- ... a-ppa.html
Oracle Java 8 is now stable. Below you'll find instructions on how to install it in Ubuntu / Linux Mint via a PPA repository. The PPA supports JDK8 for both 32bit and 64bit as well as ARM (ARM v6/v7 Hard Float ABI - there's no JDK 8 ARM Soft Float ABI archive available for download on Oracle's website).
Edit:
It successfully installed Java8 on my U3 and now I am running my java application.

Code: Select all

java -version
java version "1.8.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_06-b23)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.6-b23, mixed mode)

Code: Select all

file /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle/bin/java: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, ARM, EABI5 version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.26, BuildID[sha1]=120db07177774249eac5925cd51bc42cf3033ccd, not stripped

Now doing dist-upgrade Java8 installer came and "installed" it.
Good thing to have it included in the updates :)

Code: Select all

The following packages will be upgraded:
  oracle-java8-installer oracle-java8-set-default
