[GUIDE] PSP Emulator

Unread postby odroid » Sun Jan 05, 2014 9:29 pm

I tried to run the open source PSP emulator PPSSPP on the ODROID.
The result was amazingly great and I want to share it.

I installed the PPSSPP apk file via http://www.ppsspp.org/ on the ODROID-U3.
The name of emulator is PPSSPP and version number is 0.9.6
Full source code of PPSSPP is available on their github.
https://github.com/hrydgard/ppsspp

The Xbox-360 wired controller is connected to ODROID.
Please enjoy above video even I'm not a good player of Tekken. :o

Here is a long recommended settings on the PPSSPP configuration.

Graphics
Rendering mode
Mode : Buffered rendering

Framerate control
Frame skipping: Auto
Prevent FPS from exceeding 60: Check
Alternative speed: 150%

Features
Postprocessing shader: Off
Stretch to display: Check
Mipmapping: Uncheck

Performance
Rendering resolution: 1xPSP
Hardware transform: Check
Software skinning: Check
Vertex cache: Check
Low quality splines and bezier curves: Check

Texture scaling
Upscale level: Auto
Upscale type: xBRZ
Deposterize: Uncheck

Texture filtering
Anisotropic filtering: Off
Texture filter: Auto

Hack settings
Timer hack: Uncheck
Disable alpha test: Uncheck
Disable stencil test: Uncheck
Always depth write: Uncheck
Texture coord speedhack: Check

You can also disable the on-screen controller.
If the joystick key map is not correct, you can change it with "Control mapping" menu in the settings.

The most important thing !!
Change the governor to performance first to have a better emulation speed.
Open a terminal app and type below two lines.

Code: Select all
# su
# echo performance > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

Without this change you will have a poor game experience.

Also note that Android runs in 720p mode.
I think the emulation speed will be degraded slightly in 1080p mode.

I could play some other great PSP games smoothly on ODROID-U3.

On odroid XU,governor performance, yours settings are very bad, probably are best with U3 HW.
Here mine on XU-E(the only where the sound not lag..and gameplay is acceptable)
Graphics
Rendering mode
Mode :Not Buffered rendering

Framerate control
Frame skipping: Auto
Prevent FPS from exceeding 60: UNCheck
Alternative speed: 150%

Features
Postprocessing shader: Not selectable
Stretch to display: Check
Mipmapping: check

Performance
Rendering resolution: 1xPSP
Hardware transform: Check
Software skinning: Check
Vertex cache: Check
Low quality splines and bezier curves: Check

Texture scaling
Upscale level: Auto
Upscale type: xBRZ
Deposterize: Uncheck

Texture filtering
Anisotropic filtering: Off
Texture filter: Auto

Hack settings
Timer hack: Uncheck
Disable alpha test: Uncheck
Disable stencil test: Uncheck
Always depth write: Uncheck
Texture coord speedhack: Check

Probably there's something else better, but after an hour of change settings, this for me is the best achieved.
I'll try on U3 when i'll order and receive it.(order this week)
Thanks ODROID
Please guys, share yours settings.I always loved tekken and need yours reccomendation on how to achieve best performance in XU.

Yes.. I totally agree the XU-Lite shows better peformance.
BTW, you can try the PPSSPP with your U2. ;)

I will look into the source code of PPSSPP to find further optimization when I have time.

I've a u3 with 8gb emmc, installed with android 4.1 and ppsspp. I have followed all the configurations as described but still don't get smooth graphics and having shattering sound.
Anyone could assist if you have got smooth graphics like the youtube on takken with odroid u3?

Is your display setting is 720p?
1080p mode was not good to play the Tekken due to the lagging..

Hello !
I came across this topic when googling for an android board to use in a compact arcade cabinet and was wondering ( sorry if this is covered else where on the forums..) ;

will the U3 with a Micro SD card have lower performance with emulators compared to a U3 with a eMMC module ?
Is there any difference in performance between the u3 standard and community in PPSSPP ? EDIT: I see now that they are the same device.. my bad

I was originally planning to use my samsung s3 phone as the "brain" for my compact arcade , but seeing the performance of PPSSPP on this device ... I was sold!
Sorry if this is digging up an old thread, but this topic relates exactly to what I want to achieve!

Thank you for your time

I am looking for a guide to connect Xbox 360 wireless controller to U3, is it possible? Or a wired xbox controller is needed for psp emulator? I've also experienced slow emulation performance eventhough I've enabled performance on CPU....

Edited:
I've descovered that the xbox wirless controller works well, under android!!! The blinking rings on the controller are misleading , it works great! I suggest to try Riptide GP on U3 with this controller. The odorid U3 runs very, very smoothly with impressive and great graphics!!!! its' simply amazing!!!

You needed to set the HDMI resolution at 720p with "performance" CPU governor.
