[GUIDE] Changing Android Resolution

Unread postby mdrjr » Tue Feb 26, 2013 7:44 am

For this guide you'll need a working eMMC or SDCard with Android
and
http://dn.odroid.com/Android_resolution_settings/
this file. boot.scr.zip.

Download this file.

Inside you'll find 4 files. Only two is the one's that really matters here.

boot_android_720p.scr
boot_android_1080p.scr

Pick the boot_android_1080p.scr and rename to boot.scr
copy this file to your odroid running Android either connecting the eMMC/SD to PC or via adb
adb example: adb push boot_android_1080p.scr /mnt/sdcard/boot.scr

Make sure that you the file is named boot.scr
On Windows if you have "Hidden know extensions" enabled it may rename it to boot.scr.txt that will cause it to NOT work.

Enjoy :)

Hi mdjr,

I'm living in germany and have some problems with the resolution.
I have a ODroid U2 with Cyanogenmod 10.1.

With the two files i get the following resolutions/fps:

boot_android_720p.scr = 720p/60fps
boot_android_1080p.scr = 1080p/30fps

With 720p/60fps everything works fine. But with 1080p/30fps i have screen artefacts.
In germany we are have normaly 1080p/60fps. Is it possible to make a 'boot.scr' with 60fps?

Thanks...Sarah

from what I have been told from arcee CM doesn't need the boot.scr because it uses EDID... I have the same issue though 1080p/30hz in cm 10.1 but 1080p/60hz with th boot.scr in the hk jb images... not sure why as testing with other sources that use EDID have come out 1080p/60hz with no issues

Hello! Im running ICS on my U2 from an eMMc, I just somewhat sucessfully got the 1080p boot.scr to to run, but now just as the odroid passes the "android" load screen it seems to crash. The alive light goes out completely. some details:

Running windows 7 on my pc
running Odroid's ICS flashed to eMMc via SD card reader (I can't into ADB :P )
Monitor is an Insigna 1080p tv connected via hdmi (also having 4 corner overscan issues)

When I connected the odroid stock to the tv, the tv says it recognized 720 input, I added the boot.scr to the root fat32 and now the tv recognizes the 1080 input but goes black after android loading screen and the alive light goes out.

You can try the latest JB 1.5 image.. It has improvements on HDMI as well better compatibility with DVI.

Why not search the forum first instead of off-topic on the resolution guide section ?

I was surprised that setting resolution jumper on odroid X2 was not enough to get correct 1080p. Physically resolution was 1080p, but android reported it to be 720p and scaled image to fit the screen.
So setting correct boot.scr is needed on X2 too.

What is the root folder ?
The boot.scr file should be on the FAT partition of the sdcard.

Ive tried that... still nothing happends... on windows, the only folder i can access is the SDCARD folder on the EMMC, i cant fint the FAT partition where the android system is located. And when i paste the files in the "SDcard" folder, nothing happends when reboot.... it really gets on my nerves... i also wanna install CM but, again, i cant find the correct location to put the files.

Clearly you are doing something wrong, and yet flooding this topic that has nothing to do with your problem,

Create a thread where you can post screenshots and stuff so we can Help you.. Just writing doesn't work doesn't provide me any information on what you are facing.

Post screen shots of your windows, what you are seeing and stuff like that.

You can copy the boot.scr in Android file browser.

1. Download the file in the web-browser of Android from here, if you are using the JB beta 1.5.
http://dn.odroid.com/Android_Beta_1.5/resolution_set/
If you are using older version, try here.
http://dn.odroid.com/Android_resolution_settings/
Downloaded file can be found in /sdcard/Download/

2. Unzip the file with File browser.
And you can have some .scr files.

3. Copy a proper file into /sdcard and rename it to boot.scr

Or you can connect the ODROID to your PC via micro-USB cable and USB storage will be mounted automatically.
Just copy the boot.scr into the root directory of FAT32 parition.

I can't change the X2 by this way and the jumper on the board doen't work.
I heard that XU should use boot.ini instead of boot.scr.
How can I change the resolution of X2?
Should I modify the kernel level?

I currently have Android with Kernel Version 3.0.51+
Does going in to Odroid Utility then Screen and changing resolution in there accomplish the same as the above boot files?

I am trying to fix overscan issues on my TV. The edges seem cut. If anybody can point me in the right direction I would hightly appreciate it.

Yes. Same thing.

Overscan should be disabled on your tv.
Sadly exynos has no option to do that.

Try poking on your tv image settings.

Hello,

I have a small 7" (800x480) LCD panel connected to a driver board. If I connect the odroid to it the image is visible but the scaling and colors are horrible. Is there any way to change the Android resolution to 480p instead of using 1080p/720p?

With the raspberry pi (Raspbian) you can edit the /boot/config.txt file and play with the different parameters to make the video settings suit your monitor characteristics, but I don't know of an equivalent option to do the same with the Odroid (Android)

Maybe someone can shed some light on this aspect

Thanks!

We will try to add the 480p mode in the ODROID Utility in the next release.
But we need to check the feasibility first.

Hi codewalker,

I tested your modified boot.ini for my 7 inch lcd but no success for 840x480. This 7 inch monitor of mine does work on Odroid for 1280*720 okay (which it ended up doing with the modded boot.ini anyway) but it is native 840*480 panel.

My setup - Odroid-X, JB 4.1.2 r1.8, hdmi to VGA converter.

I've tried the suggestion from codewalker, but it doesn't work. The screen is quite blurry and the image doesn't fit the screen :(

I also tried setting the setenv hdmi_phy_res variable to 480, but doesn't work.

Allow me to throw one out there. Speaking for myself, I can make my smaller monitors display but they can be difficult to read and operate due to a hi-res image scaled down. Very awkward for the car.
Perhaps for some it might be a good enough workaround to just spoof the lower resolutions so that menu items, text and icons become larger - looking as they would if they were displaying 800*480 (or lower).

So will you bring 480p support in the next/future update or it will never happen? I am willing to use the Odroid as the main board for my project instead of a Raspberry PI, but 480p support is mandatory as 720p will force me to buy a new LCD which will increase my costs a lot :S

Also 480p will bring much better performance for 3D applications which is very welcome.

Thank you!

I would also appreciate it, if there whould be a wider supported range of screen resolutions. Sadly I didn't know about the resolution drawback until now. I planned to upgrade my Android car installation with an ODROID U3 together with an 9" display with an resolution of 1024x600px. I really hope that there will be a solution to support this resolution.

Hmm, no good news

But do you know if the ODROID will work with that display resolution? As long as the image is there and the aspect ratio etc. is good, I think I would be ok with that. The driver board of the lcd can handle resolutions up to 1080p.

Hello, I'm having some trouble with this. I can't turn off the overscan on an older TV I'd like to use (19", resolution 1440*900). I have Android 4.1.2 (Kernel 3.0.51) running on an Odroid x2. I've tried the above suggestions without success - any alternative suggestions? If I update the OS (to e.g. Kit Kat) might that help? Thanks very much for any help.

It is possible to add non-standard screen resolution on Odroid C1? 1280x480, 1280x390, 800x256
