Why your kernel modules are so large in size?
Compared to other distributions such as Archilinux or Fatdog are more than 10 times its size.
It is for any option chosen in config?

Module count, Archlinux uses xz'ed modules.

Yes, I see that modules in Archlinux are gz'ed. But even so the difference is very large, for example:
ntfs.ko - in archlinux is 58K gzipped, in your kernel is 2.3M and even xz'ed is 631K. This is more 10 times bigger.
Other example:
vfat.ko - in archlinux is 7.7K gzipped, in your kernel is 143K and even xz'ed is 46K.

that's rather easy... try stripping the modules files... filesize will reduce to about 16 MB that way instead of over 300MB (i belive?) as it's now coming from mdrjr

Please, could you add the wireless driver mt7601U to the kernel? I can compile it but i get some "unused variables" warnings and the system didn't recognize the card.
Source code is here:
http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads/mt7601u-usb/

Thanks again

Sorry but no. I can't keep adding this. The demand is too low to maintain this.

I would like to ask for having the following following option enabled if possible

Code: Select all

CONFIG_IP_MROUTE=y
CONFIG_IP_PIMSM_V1=y
CONFIG_IP_PIMSM_V2=y
CONFIG_INET6_TUNNEL=m
CONFIG_IPV6_TUNNEL=m
if you would be so kind and add it, I would be very happy since since I am not successful with recompiling kernel on my own
I could crosscompile those modules but unfortunately there is no what to enable multicast routing without recompiling whole kernel

thank you very much in advance

Hi

Is there any chance of adding the rtl8812 network drivers in, i have spent the last 3 days not getting to connect using wlan? Or if not, any chance of pointing me to where i can look as to why i cant get the driver to load. What i mean is that i can compile the driver (after using your kernel update script to update the Ubuntu image that came on the MMC, then downloading the source using git), and doing a insmod 8812au.ko gives no errors, and shows up when i do an lsmod, but looking at /var/log/syslog i dont see the driver actually kicking in. Here is what i see on my Odroid U3:

Jun 2 13:03:59 localhost kernel: [13438.237613] usb 1-3.1: new high-speed USB device number 6 using s5p-ehci
Jun 2 13:03:59 localhost kernel: [13438.343614] usb 1-3.1: New USB device found, idVendor=7392, idProduct=a812

Jun 2 13:03:59 localhost mtp-probe: bus: 1, device: 6 was not an MTP device

While compiling the kernel on a x86 Ubuntu 14.04 box, when i plug the USB card in i get:

Hi

I thought I read that somewhere, what do I need to do for it to load the driver?

I appreciate any pointers.

Thanks

Simple. You don't have an 8812 dongle.
Your usb vid/pid tells me that you have a 8821 dongle.

8812 is a 2x2:2 device (867Mbps)
8821 is a 1x1:1 (433Mbps)

The driver is for 8812.

Does this support turning off the backlight on the hardkernel LCD screen on X2/wheezy? I've been asking about getting this working in the X2 thread, but haven't got any answer. Thanks.

Don't know exactly wheezy. But on Ubuntu it worked.. 200 years ago when I was porting this.

Well I guess if you didn't do anything specific in this kernel to make it work, then this kernel isn't going to solve anything for me :(
I ejected Ubuntu over the last few days, so it went from working to not.
Would enabling CONFIG_BACKLIGHT_PWM in the kernel solve my problem, do you think?

Hi mdrjr,

Just wanted to say thanks!

At first i was taken back by your comment that i had a 8821 not an 8812 as the drivers compiled on an x86 device was 8812au.ko. But i then went back to square 1, got a clean MMC which i handn't touched, used our kernel update script, then downloaded the kernel source via git, made compiled the drivers that Edimax have on their website. The driver package is called rtl8812AU_8821AU (which is also what Asus, and others call their driver). And i was able to compile the driver (which was still called 8812au.ko). i moved aside the 8812au.ko driver that was built into the kernel update, and wireless came up!

Hi mdrjr

Please can I ask you how to build kernel 3.8.13 for Xubuntu 13.10?

I bought a U3 board and is wating for it to be delivered.
I need to build kernel source of the same version that is with Xubuntu 13.10 image.
I got the source from https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tre ... -mali_r4p0 and tried to build, but I failed
In my opinion, __linux__ was not defined when I built it. so I would have some problems in my build evniroment.

Can I ask you how I should configure environment to build 3.8.13 kernel for Xubuntu 13.10?
* what toolchain I should use,
* if there is any env variable I should set without ARCH, CROSS_COMPILE,
* if odroidu2_defconfig is is correct defconfig for Xubuntu 13.10.

If there's any post I can refer to, pleae let me know.
Thanks

First,
Pre builts and update scripts are available on my signature.

I use GCC 4.7.2 or GCC 4.8 to build it.
https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroid-3.8.y
Is the correct branch.. I've deleted that only mali branch that isn't in use anymore. All changes is now merged on the main repo now.
This is the toolchain that I use normally http://odroid.in/guides/ubuntu-lfs/arm- ... abi.tar.xz

Nice, I was scratching my head for linux-headers, but unfortunatelly after running update script I still can't compile kernel module. Makefile in /usr/src/linux-3.8.13.23 throws an error that it can't find Makefile in /usr/src/linux-3.8.13.23/arch/arm/ , well yeah, it doesn't exist. The error is:

Makefile:588: /usr/src/linux-3.8.13.23/arch/arm/Makefile: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux-3.8.13.23/arch/arm/Makefile'. Stop.

the Makefile:588 line:
include $(srctree)/arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile

EDIT: The kernel module I'm trying to compile is rp-usbdisp ( http://www.robopeak.com/data/doc/rpusbd ... US.1.5.pdf )

EDIT2: Nvm, I just coppied it from github. Now another error, but will see if I can get through it. :D

EDIT3: All is working fine. What I did was (according to page 12, bit modified):

Code: Select all

git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/hardkernel/linux.git -b odroid-3.8.y linux-odroid-3.8.y
cd linux-odroid-3.8.y
make odroidu_defconfig
make -j5 zImage
Next I went to driver dir and edited makefile (most likely could just pass an argument to make but blah) and pointer it to /root/linux-odroid-3.8.y and run make. All compilled just fine, lastly I run install pointing /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/driver_name.ko , edited some config files for DirectFB and after modprobbing successfully run links2 and startx running only Firefox with Classic Theme Restorer to disable all bars. Now browsing web (well, zoomed out :P ) with 320x240 16bpp 2.8'' USB one-touchscreen.

NOTES:
Last step crashed on some errors, but still was able to compile kernel driver (.ko) after pointing linux-headers to this directory. :)
Btw. --depth 0 is no longer supported, that's why --depth 1. Also there is no odroidu2 or odroidu3 config, all seem to be merget to odroidu_defconfig.

Have you at least tried to update the kernel and test this dongle?

I have this kernel after the kernel update script -

Linux odroidxu 3.4.98 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jul 16 14:37:11 UTC 2014 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

This kernel does not auto-detect the driver on load.

Cheers,

whatnick

Yep I have the XU. So 3.4.98 is the latest kernel on the XU. The update script does not seem to overwrite my zImage during update. Had to do it manually. That aside I have the card working on 3.13 on an intel machine. I will see what is involved in backporting the driver via linuxtv backports tree overlay. Which kernel sources should I checkout to attempt and compile the linuxtv overlay tree ?

Cheers,

whatnick.

No I don't, I have been trying to compile the kernel with it in it, but fails. Dont know what I'm doing or doing wrong. Hoping those modules could be included by default.

Code: Select all

E: Unable to locate package xz
btw. Shouldn't it be xz-utils? Also script should automatically install GIT package. If git package is not installed it errors with:

Code: Select all

./kernel-update.sh: line 642: git: command not found
./kernel-update.sh: line 643: cd: armsoc-r4p0: No such file or directory
./kernel-update.sh: line 644: ./autogen.sh: No such file or directory
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
right after xz error...

Is it kernel-update or odroid-utility?

I just tried that script with an updated debian from odroid.us, but it didn't work.
To help the script detect the system, I created the file /etc/hk-debian.
At the end, the script complains that it doesn't find /boot/boot-auto.scr (Or something like thet, don't remember the exact name), but it finishes.
But when I reboot, I'm still using the 3.0.57 kernel.
So is there any way to update to kernel 3.8 with the odroid.us debian version ?
