Any chance to have CONFIG_USB_HIDDEV (re)enabled.

We've lost kernel support required by daemon apcupsd to monitor UPS over usb between kernels 3.0 and 3.8

root@U3-odroid:~# gzip -d < /proc/config.gz | grep HIDDEV
# CONFIG_USB_HIDDEV is not set
root@U3-odroid:~# uname -r
3.8.13.18

Out of curiosity, why do you use the custom kernel update script instead of just putting the kernels into some sort of repository that users can apt-get?

Have you checked how many distros I do support?

I have a single package with kernel and modules that I can work out on any distro that I support with minimal changes on a shell script..

Well, I've tried to put my kernel back from backup. Now I cannot boot(

Maybe someone can help me? I can acess my SD card partitions on my desktop with Ubuntu.

Well, fixed by flashing new image and using configs picked from SD.

I need the module:

s5p-jpeg.ko (CONFIG_VIDEO_SAMSUNG_S5P_JPEG)

so we can try hardware jpeg coding and decoding.

I have searched the web, but it seems that no one has ever tested this feature.

Thanks in advance

You have an ODROID-XU (according to your profile).
That's kernel 3.4 and its already enabled.

Re: Kernel 3.8.13 no more LAN after update the kernel

Unread post by sigi_wei » Mon May 05, 2014 12:06 am

Hello to everybody,

I have a problem updating the kernel:
I installed this image on my U3 (emmc 8GB) : Whisper 13.10 U2/U3: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2338 from robroy. I installed/purged some software and everything was running well.
Then I updated the kernel according to this:

Code: Select all

    wget http://builder.mdrjr.net/tools/kernel-update.sh
    chmod +x kernel-update.sh
    sudo ./kernel-update.sh
The update did run well and the U3 started. - But the LAN is dead!!!!!! The LEDs of the RJ-45 Jack do not shine or blink!!! ifcconfig eth0 says: no device found.
I did this two times with the same result.

When I put this emmc into my U2 then there is the same ( no LAN ) >> no hardware problem

What did I wrong?? What can I do to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Hi mdrjr,

The U3 seems running good. Keyboard and touchpad are working. Sound ( VLC ) is working. Screen is ok. The micro-SD card is mounted well.

But I can't mount a HDD or USB-stick or SD card ( via adaptor).

Code: Select all

sudo blkid    and   geparted
do not show this devices > but I don' know if this behavior does exist before the kernel-update. > I never connected such a device.
USB-WLAN (ODROID) is dead too.

Code: Select all

sudo iwconfig
says : no wireless extensions !!!!

thanks in advance

type lsmod and see if modules are being loaded :)
If they aren't something might gone wrong during the update.

Hi mdrjr,

there is not one modul loaded !!!!! is this possible???????????

Code: Select all

TV@odroid:~$ sudo lsmod
[sudo] password for TV:
Module                  Size  Used by
TV@odroid:~$ lsmod

TV@odroid:~$ sudo modprobe nfs
[sudo] password for TV:
libkmod: ERROR ../libkmod/libkmod.c:554 kmod_search_moddep: could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/3.8.13.11/modules.dep.bin'
TV@odroid:~$ sudo modprobe smsc95xx
libkmod: ERROR ../libkmod/libkmod.c:554 kmod_search_moddep: could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/3.8.13.11/modules.dep.bin'
TV@odroid:~$ sudo modprobe usbnet
libkmod: ERROR ../libkmod/libkmod.c:554 kmod_search_moddep: could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/3.8.13.11/modules.dep.bin'
TV@odroid:~$
...... '/lib/modules/3.8.13.11/modules.dep.bin' > is this the right path????

when I copy the img-file to the emmc and do the kernelupdate immediately without any changes, then there is the same issue.

What can I try???

Thanks in advance

very possible..

For example.. I think when you run the script you didn't had /media/boot mounted.

type: "mount" and see if /media/boot is mounted. If it isn't the script will fail.

Hi mdrjr,

... that was the reason!!!! I changed in the the fstab : /dev/.... to UUID..... and now /media/boot is mounted well on start and the script runs without problems !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, this works great, thanks!

One feature request: could the script validate downloads with md5 before installing anything? I have a U3 running in a relatively unaccessable location, and with shaky 3G connection only. So some kind if validation of the downloaded files would be great for that.

It would mean that you have to automatically publish corresponding *.md5 files with your build script, but that should not be too difficult. If you would do that, I can help fix the download script to make use of them.

Actually this is in my plans..
For example.. The .tar.xz packages already has the kernel headers inside...
Just the script that isn't installing it :(

Any chance that you could get the eGalax Touchscreens to work?
They recommend that you edit drivers/hid/hid-core.c and rem out the lines like below. See... http://home.eeti.com.tw/LinuxDriverDownload.html

/*case USB_VENDOR_ID_DWAV:*/
/* These are handled by usbtouchscreen. hdev->type is probably
* HID_TYPE_USBNONE, but we say !HID_TYPE_USBMOUSE to match
* usbtouchscreen. */
/*if ((hdev->product == USB_DEVICE_ID_EGALAX_TOUCHCONTROLLER ||
hdev->product == USB_DEVICE_ID_DWAV_TOUCHCONTROLLER) &&
hdev->type != HID_TYPE_USBMOUSE)
return true;
break;*/

I have tried this and rebuilt the kernel from /odroid-3.8.y but I cannot get the touchscreen to work. I was getting a warning during the build so I even deleted the lines but it made no difference, the warning is gone but the touchscreen still doesn't work. I use these same touchscreens on a different computer with 3.11.0-20-generic kernel and it has been fixed so that there is no need to edit the hid-core.c file.

Is there anything you can do? I'm not a Linux expert so I'm lost as to how to fix this myself. Thanks.

First don't follow their instructions.. its pure trash and their software doesn't work.
I have TWO eGalax touch controller same vid/pid as yours...

Don't need to touch the kernel.. just follow this instructions:

Why my fan cooling my odroid 0.5second per 1second (like on-off-on-off-on..... seqence every seconds) after update.

I fixit temporary by change "fan_mode"setting to manual, but I can't change "pwm_duty".(fixed on 133)
it is very noisy that I can't use it. any solution?

I have TWO eGalax touch controller same vid/pid as yours...

Don't need to touch the kernel.. just follow this instructions:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1478877
Thanks. I get Unknown option: _x11 when I run ./xinput_calibrator _x11
The cursor moves around perfectly on the eGalax touchscreen now but I can't select/highlight/press anything.

Could you please post and keep updated the current kernel version (as in 3.8.13.23) in the OP?

Is it possible to activate I/O accounting support ?

This is for psutil (used by glances) an iotop.

Code: Select all

# uname -ar
Linux DEBIANU3 3.8.13.23 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue May 20 20:38:43 UTC 2014 armv7l GNU/Linux

Code: Select all

# iotop --version
Could not run iotop as some of the requirements are not met:
- Linux >= 2.6.20 with
  - I/O accounting support (CONFIG_TASKSTATS, CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT, CONFIG_TASK_IO_ACCOUNTING)

Works fine with custom compile kernel :

Code: Select all

root@DEBIANU3:~# uname -ar
Linux DEBIANU3 3.8.13.23 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat May 24 17:22:54 UTC 2014 armv7l GNU/Linux
root@DEBIANU3:~# iotop --version
iotop 0.4.4
Waiting now from the latest official built.
