Call for testing Kernel 6.6

Post by mdrjr »

The same way we updated to kernel 6.1 we are now updating to kernel 6.6

For reference the old thread: viewtopic.php?f=177&t=46680

Its a call for people to test and help find out what features are missing

It looks like there are less than 100 days left until the Ubuntu 24.04 release.
I hope that critical bugs will be resolved and all major features will be implemented by then. ;)

From my testing...

its missing the Generic GPIO bit-banged PWM driver (CONFIG_PWM_GPIO), so the fan on the N2+ doesnt work.

The option is completely missing from kernel config like xconfig. pwm-gpio.c is also missing from the drivers/pwm folder.

No problem

Tho it doesn’t build with the option selected.

Oops, I've just merged the driver and didn't checked it.
I fixed the driver to work with kernel 6.6 now :)
Tested fan on N2+ working just fine.

Re: Call for testing Kernel 6.6

Currently I have updated my systems to 6.6 (both the M1S and the N2+).
I must say my systems work mostly with a vanilla kernel, but there is one thing I hope to be supported from odroid + mainline:
the wifi adapter.

I have an odroid 5A,a 5B and a 5BK, but none works yet with 6.6.x (vanilla + some DTB-files for the Odoids)..
Currently I´ḿ using the M1S with a RTL8192 which is pretty stable. The 5BK seems to ¨almost work¨, but for a project I´d call that a "fail¨, since I can´t depend on it.
Any link I try to get the adapters to work are 1-2years old (github), which is a problem since those are not fit for a more recent 6.6-kernel.

Now the specific question: what wifi adapter would you recommend for an N2+ (or an M1S)?
If you say ¨my sources work as well as upstream" I could switch to your repository.

Is there a chance to get the gpio power button functionality brought to mainline?

Possible, yes, with a overlay.

Just to understand, you use a button to power off the board?

I would appreciate to use the power button to power up and shut down.
Power cycling by pulling and reconect the cable is just going on my nerves.
Please figure something out.
And by the way a newer U-Boot is also nice.

Actually, the functionality kernel 4.9 and corresponding u-boot had, so power up and power down.
I presume there was proprietary code in u-boot, which does not exist for the one used with 6.6.

I used the same u-boot for everything, 4.9, 6.1 and 6.6.
So the part that powers up, should be from u-boot, should work.

Power down is from Linux world, that shouldn't be working right now.
Can you guys confirm that? I will prepare later a test board to look at this.

Added today for kernel 6.6, can I have a confirmation that it works as expected?

I tested here and it worked for me, but i would be great to hear from others.

I noticed the 6.6 kernel doesn't include drivers for an Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8811AU 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Odroid branded WLAN Adapter

It is small grey one. I think you have a couple of samples.

Compiled 6.6.13 with a 6.1 configuration and that booted up into Ubuntu 22.04, only squashfs difficulties prevented from starting web browsers.
Could You provide Your configuration file for comparing, please?
Does the .dtb file need changes, also?

Thanks for Your efforts

Did someone performance test the new kernel with this usb gigabit ethernet lan adaptor? https://www.amazon.de/BYEASY-Geschwindi ... 1D5TW?th=1

USB 3 device!

RTL8153B cxhipset driverless

It was on 5.15 and 6.1 slowing the system down so much that other usb input devices nearly did't work.

Maybe the new scheduler gives an advantage in all I/O porocesses?

A list of all supported chipsets would be a nice, guessing is not my specilality.

Re: Call for testing Kernel 6.6

Post by specs »

I did try to make the kernel however it is too much work for me to succeed.

First I tried with a known and working config I use for a vanilla kernel (failed).
Then I tried with a "make defconfig" which yields a compiling kernel (eventually).
However that config ended because I was testing with a fresh tobetter version of debian, meaning I completed the installation but the system won't start with "linux-image-6.6.13-g75fbc36653bf" (failed).
The "include/config/kernel.release" breaks the installation and "make clean" and even "make mrproper" ends with an error.

If "make mrproper" does not work it ends for me. Period.

It's actually a driver issue, its quite known even on x86 Linux, I may test that later, as I have one of those adapters.
The idea is to use the vendor driver.

I tested the realtek original driver.
It made the system responsive with RTL8153B. Works on 5.15 and 6.1. Unknown if working on 6.6.
But the RTL8153B after some short time turns on and off about 4 time and then shuts down completly. Driver issues?

Are there any plans for releasing Ubuntu 24.04 with kernel 6.6? thanks.

Re: Call for testing Kernel 6.6

I downloaded and flashed Ubuntu 22.04 minimal from here:

https://www.odroid.in/ubuntu_22.04lts/testing/

Ubuntu minimal booted up, connected to wifi using the odroid wifi dongle. Did a

Code: Select all

apt update && apt upgrade -y
Update went through successfully and the kernel was updated to 6.6, although initramfs complained about a couple of missing firmware.

I then tried to run

Code: Select all

apt install ubuntu-desktop
I get a bunch of unmet dependencies errors and I can't proceed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Appreciate the prompt response. Here's the output:

There is way too many things broken.
I thought that was odd too, since I literally flashed the minimal, upgraded, and then tried to install ubuntu-desktop and ran into these issues.

I followed your instructions, and it seems to be a lot better. This is what I see now:

Code: Select all

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

That worked, well at least the installation has started.

I have a question. Will ubuntu-desktop use GPU acceleration by default? Or is there anything I need to do to enable that?

Probably switch to panfrost instead of the Mali proprietary driver

Thank you for that.

Btw, after flashing the minimal image, when I ran

Code: Select all

apt update && apt upgrade
I got the following at the end of the upgrade process:

Thank you.

The ubuntu-desktop install finished. I rebooted, and the splash screen appeared with the purple background, and then the system waits for several minutes without the login dialog showing up, and eventually dies with a "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator."

Maybe try masking upower in systemd ?
looks like upowerd binary is corrupted somehow...
I don't know why it isn't working, I'm focused on supporting 24.04 now.

I tried that, the upower errors went away, but now I can't even get the purple background, just a mouse cursor.

Thanks anyway.

Any ETA on 24.04?

Btw, these posts appear to indicate that the issue with upower is related to the CONFIG_USER_NS kernel option not being enabled and that appears to be the case with this kernel. Masking upower fails even earlier, with journalctl complaining that the necessary service upower is masked.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1 ... art-0.html
https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm ... ly_broken/

Code: Select all

root@odroid:~# zgrep CONFIG_USER_NS /proc/config.gz
# CONFIG_USER_NS is not set
Unfortunately, compiling the kernel is beyond my skillset, so I reckon I'll just have to wait for 24.04 and hope that works out.
