Call for test the XU4 Linux Kernel 6.6 LTS

Post by mdrjr »

A long, long time ago, in August of 2014, we launched the world's first true HMP octa-core powered ARM single board computer.
Although our XU4 series has been on the market for almost 10 years, it is still a steady seller with thousands of units shipped every month.

Ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 3.10 was released in 2014,
Since then, we have continuously updated kernels to 4.4, 4.9, 4.14, 5.4, 6.1 versions, and today we are releasing version 6.6
The latest Kernel 6.6 LTS source code is available here : https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroid-6.6.y

Its the usual, we are still working on this tree and it will be the base kernel.
I may have forgot many things...
Any PR is appreciated.

Will definitely give this a go, thank you for the continued support.

The XU4 is still my workhorse device.

How do we test this on our Odroid device?

Hard to believe. Its 9 years since I moved from the Odroid-X to the XU4. Apart from the power supply failing about 6 years ago, its been powered 24/7 running random things for me. Such a great bit of kit.

I have been running this kernel on my Armbian/OMV HC1 NAS using the kernel from the PR above and observed no issues.

We've released a new Ubuntu 24.04 OS image for XU4/XU3/HC1/HC2/MC1 models with the following features.
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
- Kernel 6.6 LTS
- Custom-built Chromium browser (version 123) which supports the EGL/GPU acceleration for WebGL
- Custom-built Qt5 libraries to use OpenGL-ES HW acceleration on X11
- Added 1920x720 HDMI driver for better display compatibility

Hardware accelerated WebGL works fine with a modern web-browser on the Mate/X11.

I have upgraded armbian kernel to 6.6 and now cloudshell lcd is not working.
How can I fix it?

Thanks

Edit: SOLVED, boot.ini was ok, I think it was armbianEnv.txt file, there was duplicate board_name var.

Double check boot.ini/config.ini see if the overlay is being loaded..

Is it possible to upgrade to this version from previous 22.04.4 one?

Yes it is.

1. Backup.
2. Make sure you made a backup.
3. Are you really sure?
4. edit /etc/apt/sources.list and replace the word jammy to noble (on every single occurance)
5. edit all files on /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and do the same, change jammy to noble
6. apt update && apt dist-upgrade
7. wait, a lot! if everything goes well, you will have a updated image.

There's an error when apt update:

Err:4 http://ppa.launchpad.net/hardkernel/ppa/ubuntu noble Release
404 Not Found [IP: 185.125.190.80 80]

...
E: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/hardkernel/ppa/ubuntu noble Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

Edit: There's a file "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/hardkernel-ubuntu-ppa-focal.list" with content:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/hardkernel/ppa/ubuntu noble main

where I changed previously 'jammy' into 'noble' here, may be the source of the error.

How would I resolve this issue?
