Having a difficult time getting Ultra setup, please help

Post by bunny »

Dudes I dont know what it is about hardkernel products, they have ALL given me problems... I have a Go and an Advanced and I have no idea how I was able to make it work, but even that thing is still giving me issues to this day, so im sick of it and ordered an Ultra to replace it, hoping it would be easier since everything I read says "just add ROMs"
Ive been sitting here for 4 hours trying to make it work. my night is wasted and its not so "right out of the box" as the little bit of information I can find, says.

So now I have to wait for someone to help.
I find so much mixed information but this is what I have done so far:

Formatted an SD card to exFAT.

downloaded the 7zip file from somewhere on this forum, unzipped, and placed a "roms" folder inside the main directory on that SD. It is filled with folders named after console systems. Started small and inserted NES roms into the "nes" folder, and still emulationstation is blank of any systems other than settings.

these are the same (uncompressed) files ive used on my Odroid Go and Advanced. These are the same files I have used for years in ALL of my emulated systems... but for some reason.... all the odroid stuff is extremely difficult, and its frustrating how they say the Ultra " doesn't need any sort of extra building"

What am I doing wrong? I have tried putting the game folders into the main directory, but that doesnt work either. I have tried creating a "storage/roms/nes" folder system, but that ALSO doesnt work.
I have tried renaming the folder to "ROMS" instead of "roms" but it just changes back to lowercase and wont let me capitalize the folder.

i need some honest 1 on 1 help to make this thing work. I was really hoping to see it working tonight as soon as I got it, but it looks like its more complicated odroid hardware.

I have no idea whats going on... i accidentally turned it on without the SD card and only had a black screen, even after putting the SD card back in.

i got frustrated and held that button on the back along with the power button, until it went off, turned it back on, and now the games appear....

since im here, where do I put the BIOS files for PS1 and Dreamcast? Do I simply make a "bios" folder inside of roms?

Hi the SD must be always inside before you POWER ON.
The console never asked me to insert Dreamcast bios, if you need the PSX and know how to put the file, you have to follow this procedure (only STEP 4)

I am working on PSX right now, I will find out if it works, Thank you for the help.

I picked up a new SD card and I am starting over. My first load up of roms seems to have went well, I am not sure why it didint work the first time, unless it was the SD card, or the fact that I didint actually have the ROMS on the PC, it was pulling them from a cloud storage in real time as I was moving files.

I need help with N64 though. I have no C buttons. I was hoping to make the right joystick act as C buttons. How can I change or setup custom buttons for systems, or for N64? almost all of the top triggers are Z buttons and none of them are the actual triggers. Can someone help me with that?

I am still having a problem with only some of my n64 games showing up (an example, I cant see Zelda, and it has always worked on other systems)

Also SNES games are not appearing either.

I tried attaching the Ultra to the PC with the supplied cable, and I turned it on, but I dont see it on the PC

Ok guys..... well, I decided to slow down and actually read..... all of my SNES ROMs are .SMC, and I guess I need .SFC.
Also, i never noticed half my N64 ROMs are .V64, and I guess I need .Z64 or just .N64.

I still cant figure out why I cant see my Ultra on the PC to install the PSX bios. Can someone still help me with this?
Also, how can I config buttons, so I can setup the right joystick as C buttons on N64?

Ok, I figured out how to get the Ultra connected to the PC.... I have the PSX BIOS in place and PSX is working.
Ive fixed all my issues on my own, but I still dont know how to modify the controls config for N64 AND now PSX.

Now I need real help, can someone tell me what file I need to find to edit controls, and whats the name of the joypad and other keys so I can set them?

Can I also modify the visual qualities of N64 and PSX?

Is installing a different OS my better choice? I still play NES/SNES, but can someone recommend an OS that is better for N64/PSX/Dreamcast?

I don’t have find the menù where you can set up the controller.
I found this
https://retropie.org.uk/docs/EmulationStation/

Maybe you can find a solution here
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/217 ... r-config/3

It’s very hard to set this console, I want to try Jelos when fix the audio problem

If you use duckstation emulator for PSX you can increase the resolution and remove the texture waviness which looks great on PSX.

I appreciate the advice, I will keep this in mind.
Today I discovered/realized that I cannot actually "reset" the ROM in emulationstation. Its constantly stuck in save state, even if I turn off the setting.
So between that and the messed up controls, I think Ive had enough of this OS.
(All of my problems in this thread seem to have been from trying to force use the stock OS.)

Is duckstation only a standalone or is it built into another OS? There are still other systems I play often.
I usually play almost everything. NES, SNES, Genesis... but I am more focused on N64, PSX, Dreamcast. I Still have an Odroid Go and a Go Advanced, but I need more power!
I know some of those are not "simple" consoles, but I am not looking for anything past those 3 harder ones. That is why I finally picked up an Ultra, I thought the hardware would be good for my wants.

Can you point me towards a few examples of better OS's I can throw on this thing? (I have some familiarity with using Etcher and am pretty sure I can get my way around changing the firmware.)
(Im more used to Android for emulation, so I really dont know where to start looking for the Ultra.)

Try Jelos which seemed to be more comfortable and user-friendly.

We have duckstation available as standalone and as a libretro core on this device.

I really appreciate all the help that has been placed so far, I hope no one took my initial response as negative, I still have quite a few Odroid devices and have always been super excited about the hardware/pricepoint. (I leave my Go Advanced at work for some simple fun, but now I see that JelOS also works on it, so I am curious to see if I can give it some new life, instead of Emulationstation.)

I am currently looking into the research/history for JelOS. (Hi fewt, I believe you work on JelOS.)
I am guessing this is the best approach.
Emulationstation just has some limitations I am not the most fond of, so I really want to move away from it but I am first trying to better prepare myself before I flash it.

Just a week ago I replaced the joysticks with PS Vita sticks and also replaced the membrane rubber under the buttons, so tactile controls are feeling super exciting- I just want to try different software.
