Lubuntu 13.10 Whisper for ODROID-X (20140101)

Unread post by robroy » Thu Sep 26, 2013 3:21 am

I created a minimal Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander image, forked from the official XFCE Hard Kernel release, with a core suite of applications for an energy-efficient netbook/desktop computer optimized for speed and performance.

Download the image here:
13.10 Saucy Salamander: http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 101.img.xz
13.04 Raring Ringtail: http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 101.img.xz

European mirror by @traxo:
http://odroid.txmonitor.de/

Keep your Whisper image updated:
Kernel updates: http://builder.mdrjr.net/tools/kernel-update.sh

Username: odroid
Password: odroid

Username: root
Password: odroid

Applications: Firefox, Chromium, Xine, XBMC, Gimp, Transmission, Filezilla and Oracle JDK 8.

Autologin is enabled and boots directly to a single-user Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) running Xfce desktop.

If you enjoy my contributions to the Hard Kernel community, please consider donating an amount of your choice via the link in my signature.

Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
  • 1. Resize the "rootfs" partition to fit your SD card. This is best done on another Linux system using the GParted utility.
    2. Set your time zone using "sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata", or press the Up arrow in the Terminal window on first boot.
    3. Set your language using Preferences -> Language Support.
Improvements and upgrades:
  • 1. To overclock to 1.92GHz, type "sudo gedit /etc/rc.local" in Terminal and remove the "#" from the beginning of the line that starts with "echo 1920000".
    2. Firefox has the IcedTea7 plugin installed for Java browser applets, and uses the built-in HTML5 player which is not compatible with Flash. Chromium has the Pepper Flash plugin installed for viewing Flash videos. Both Chromium and Firefox have the Adblock Plus add-on. The default browser is Chromium.
    3. All upgrades and updates have been run using aptitude, apt-get and synaptic.
    4. All orphaned and obsolete packages have been purged, including the original kernel.
    5. Lots of quality-of-life tweaks, such as setting folder preferences to List View, removing the Battery icon from the Status bar, setting the Chromium and Firefox preferences to their highest privacy settings, and installing wallpapers (/usr/share/wallpapers).
Features in this release: Notes:
  • This image is a light-weight version of Dream Machine that boots to a desktop in 14 seconds, uses 150MB of memory, and requires only 3.5 GB of disk space. The Mali 3D acceleration achieves a glmark2-es2 score of 145 without overclocking.

    XBMC performs best when the resolution is set to 720p, which is done by typing "cp /media/boot/backup/boot-hdmi-720p60hz.scr /media/boot/boot.scr" in the Terminal window before rebooting.

    Vino VNC server may be started via SSH by typing "vino" after enabling Desktop Sharing using "vino-preferences".

    Optional USB and TFTP boot support is available with the updated bootloader by @suriyan (more here: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2722)

    More Odroid software by @meveric is available here: http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/repository

Does this work for odroid-x? I just tried this and both blue lights go on for a second, and then turn off.

I will double check the upload and post back once I have a new image on the server. Thank you for letting me know.

Although I don't own an -X, I did verify that the master Whisper-X image boots on my -X2 showing only 1GB of memory.

I uploaded a new copy, so please let me know if you still experience problems.

Same problem, I don't have a uart either. I think there are more differences between odroid-x2 and odroid-x than just memory and cpu speed, so images won't be compatible between the two.

This image doesn't use an -X2 kernel. I install the actual -X kernel into the image using @mdrjr's update script as I do on Dream Machine and other images.

An -X2 can boot an -X image, but not the other way around.

I need someone with a USB-UART on their -X to post a boot log. The posts so far aren't consistent in describing how the image is responding.

Also, please double check that you are unzipping the .img file before writing it to your card.

I will be publishing an update to my Whisper series today, which will include re-installing the kernel and uploading a new -X image. Hopefully the boot issues will disappear with the rebase.

robroyhall,
I just downloaded your current Lubuntu-13.04_Whisper-X-HDMI.20130925 image, extracted it and loaded on an SD card.

Here is the boot log via PuTTY from the USB-UART serial interface on my ODROIDX.

I do not have an HDMI screen close by so I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to allow my LCD screen to work. I can say this image is working fine on this ODROIDX and LCD combination. Ethernet is working fine also, the GREEN light is the only one on, but that is what I always see on the -X. BTW, on the -X2 both LEDs are lit on the Ethernet interface.

If you need more, I could try and HDMI TV connection, but this would take some work for me, and no guarantee since I have never tried an HDMI connection from any of my ODROIDs.

--Edit to describe Ethernet working--

This is great, thank you! I'm glad that the image is booting for you :)

I am going to upload an updated version with some small improvements this afternoon. Hopefully @dweezy and @cfairfax will be able to successfully use the new version.

As a reminder, Hardkernel's instructions for flashing your SD or eMMC module are available on the General How-To forum: http://forum.odroid.com/viewforum.php?f=53

This latest image works for me, but when I reboot using "sudo reboot", it does not start back up. I have to push the button, and even then there's like a 2/3 chance that it doesn't come back on, and I have to replug the power.

I should note that this same behavior has happened with every image I have tried with the exception of the linaro ubuntu image in august 2012.

update:
This works for a few cycles, and then the thing doesn't boot at all.

How does it respond if you use the "reboot" selection from the X11 applications menu?

I just re-flashed the image on the sd card, and tried with hdmi. This time I clicked reboot, and it shut down, but it seems like the same behavior. I can't even get it to boot back with the power button.

I recommend starting a new thread, since you're having the problem with multiple images. This problem comes up sometimes, and may be related to your HDMI cable. @mdrjr may ask for your boot log, which can be found in /var/log/kern.log.

Refer below link about the reboot issue. There is a workaround or temporary fix.

SD, have no issues with "shutdown -h 0" or "sudo reboot", working fine :)

I'll double check the image on my -X2 and upload a new copy if necessary. Thanks for letting me know!

EDIT: I downloaded the image via http, copied to an sd card and was able to successfully boot to a desktop.

There is an .md5sum for the .img.xz file in the same directory as the image for verification. Also, make sure to zero your card before writing.

If you have further issues, please check your X and kernel log files, or the USB-UART output, for unusual errors or warnings. Please don't post your whole log, just the relevant part.

New features in this release:
  • 1. Installed Vino and Vinagre VNC remote desktop server and client (more here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=266981)
    2. Installed Thunar file manager which supports drag-n-drop and Samba shares
    3. Installed XF desktop as an alternative to PCManFM
    4. Added Terminal to Application Launch Bar and replaced PCManFM with Thunar
    5. Changed icon theme to Ubuntu Studio to support a wider array of icons
    6. Installed Gnome System Tools to facilitate management of Users and Groups
Enjoy!

Want to upgrade your existing Whisper image?
PCManFM does not support network shares or drag-n-drop, and replacing it with Thunar restores those functions. More here under "LXDE/XFCE hybrid": http://askubuntu.com/questions/73017/th ... -11-10-how.

1. Install the new packages:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install vino vinagre gnome-system-tools ubuntu-studio-icon-theme thunar thunar-media-tags-plugin thunar-archive-plugin file-roller xfdesktop4 xfce-terminal
2. Right-click the bottom Panel and select "Panel Settings", then change the default file manager to "thunar %s" from "pcmanfm %s".

3. Right-click the Application Launcher and select "Application Launcher Settings", then add Terminal Emulator and File Manager to the Launcher after removing PCManFM.

4. Edit the file "~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart" and add an exclamation point "!" to the beginning of the line that starts with "@pcmanfm".

5. Add a file called "xfdesktop.desktop" to the directory "~/.config/autostart" with the following contents and reboot:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Exec=xfdesktop
Icon=help-contents
StartupNotify=false
Terminal=false
Categories=Utility;X-XFCE;X-Xfce-Toplevel;
Name=XFCE Desktop Manager
Comment=XFCE Desktop Manager
6. Using the Settings -> Customize Look and Feel application, change the icon theme to Ubuntu Studio.

I created a patch for Dream Machine and Whisper that restores the 9/1/2013 build of XBMC, which eliminates the pops and clicks of the audio as well as some of the playback problems.

Please keep in mind that only the Android version of XBMC delivers smooth playback at all resolutions. There will be some 720p and many 1080p videos that do not play well in the Linux version.

XBMC also offers a hardware-accelerated Youtube plugin, which is a great improvement over the software-decoded browser versions.

Download the patch here:
http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/softwar ... 901.tar.gz

If you have any improvements or suggestions for improving the Odroid Linux build of XBMC 12.2, please direct your comments to the official XBMC thread: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1244.

For developers, the official Odroid XBMC 12.2 repository may be found here: https://github.com/mdrjr/xbmc/.

Redownload and reflash the image, and make sure to verify your download with the .md5sum file included in the same FTP directory.

I have another release coming out today so you may want to wait for the new image to be posted.

About Whisper 13.10 20131111 i've just checked md5 and it's the same as in included .md5sum file, i've also filled sd card with 0s before i flashed image and the problem exist only with that image, i just want to let you know that something is wrong before you release another image. Thanks for your work and waiting for another release.

I'll download and check it, but it's unlikely that I uploaded two corrupt images in a row ;)

Are you using an eMMC? It may require using the emmc recovery tool because of the new bootloader.

I just downloaded and tested the -X image on the server, and it boots correctly on my eMMC module. However, it doesn't boot from SD card because of the new bootloader which is different for SD card and eMMC.

If you don't have an eMMC module, you can flash the stable bootloader onto your SD card in a few seconds by temporarily booting from another Linux boot disk. Please review the original post for instructions on updating your copy.

I'll be releasing another version of the 13.04 image early next week, and I'll make sure use the original HK bootloader which allows booting from either SD or eMMC with the same binaries.

FYI, 13.04 is more stable than 13.10 right now. Some of the 13.10 software such as Gparted is still buggy.

Once again latest Whisper isn't booting but in a different way than before. Red led is on and no blue at all. MD5sum already checked and older Whisper boots fine.

I'll double check the image. You're running from SD card, right?

If you just want to fix the XBMC issue, which was the main reason for the latest release, you can install the .deb from @meveric's repository: http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/repository/jessie/.

Is there any way to download earlier image with working bootloader? I see you're uploading 20131117 again, is it fixed version?

It's the new boot-auto.scr, which probes your HDMI monitor to find the optimal resolution.

If you create a new thread under "Issues", @mdrjr is sure to recommend a solution, and it will be easier for others to find who are in the same situation.
