M1 4gb or N2L 4gb for internet TV using ethernet

Post by ODroidope »

just wondering which sbc would be easier and better to setup as an internet and youtube tv

the N2L seems very powerful but Im only viewing sports at HD resolution at best with youtube @ 1080 and no interest to use 4k or higher.

The M1 4gb looks sufficient and has more connectivity and usb ports

Any recommendations or suggestions?

Also can I just use my SSD HDD (a kingston 120gb) to run say Peppermint linux on the M1 or do I need a eMMC module?
would be great to know all the bits I needs to purchase all at once
SBC
powersupply
battery
can I use remote control from my N2+ for the M1 since it is not used since I bought it
anything Im missing?

Hi,

I don't think Peppermint was ported to any ARM computer.

The official and recommended distributions for almost all ARM ODROIDs is either Ubuntu or Android, with many other third party options.
If you're interested in PC-compatible SBC, try Odroid H3 - this will run any Linux distro, including Peppermint.

But staying with ARM computers for a while.. For watching multimedia and nothing else, perhaps you'd be most happy with either Android, or preconfigured Kodi image available on this forum.

As for hardware, I'd cross out N2L, as it does not have Ethernet port. N2+ is the same CPU machine that does have great connectivity, so that wouldn't exactly be an upgrade for you.

M1 can boot from any medium, SD card, eMMC module, SATA HDD or NVMe drive - the last option I think is the fastest. You don't need to own eMMC.

Anyway, to complete your shopping list I guess you need to decide which OS you'd like to use and how.
One option is to get:
- Odroid M1
- Power supply
- SATA mounting kit with cables
- RTC battery.
That is, if you want to reuse your SATA SSD.

About the N2+ remote control, I'm not sure but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

I would recommend CoreELEC if you only consider watching a video and their forum would be better place to ask and decide, and ODROID-N2Plus or ODROID-C4 are good candidate with CoreELEC.

This thread would help if you like to go with ODROID-M1.

many thanks for your links, had a good read and the M1 meets all of my requirements

great to learn I can use the SSD HDD I have with an adaptor, I really like the case of the M1 over the N
as my N2plus case is difficult o secure on and off which is quite a hassle for such a fine performer.

I don't think the 2,5" HDD will fit inside the M1 case, just so you know.

Worse still, if you plan on using the internal sata and power on the m1 board (which should be more stable than via usb), you'll need to use the hardkernel power cable for sata drives, but it won't fit under the case (so you can't close it).
