defective unit?

Post by jesusrp »

I´ve purchased M1S I installed all versions of ubuntu, gnome, mate, xfce... and also with android. It behaves sloooooooooowly, and laaaaagy.

I´m also having lots of problems, whenever I´m trying to flash another OS, because windows hardly ever recognizes it when I´m trying to flash another OS.

Is that normal?
what can I do?

If you were trying to watch youtube in 4K then I'm not surprised.
What's the target application of your M1S?

I mean just login into the vanilla xfce image, just installing a browser and navigate, or sudo apt upgrade...

Or login in android vanilla image, or ubuntu mate vanilla image..

What are the other SBCs you are comparing your M1S experience with?

To clarify, it takes 37 seconds to boot and show mate login screneen, it takes another 37 seconds to show the desktop, after login in.

It takes more than 5 seconds to show mate task masnager, it takes more than 30 seconds to startup crhomium.

Are those the average times for the rest of M1S?

on top of that, some of the images published in thie forum for example this one https://dn.odroid.com/RK3566/ODROID-M1S ... 103.img.xz
from this thread viewtopic.php?f=217&t=47621&start=50 doent boot at my unit, after flashing tnem.

I think there is a problem with this unit, but I would like to double check

Which MATE image did you use?
Can you see any errors in dmesg?

In xfce you can turn off compositor, to make the gui more responsive, but a 37s boot time is excessive. Are you booting from onboard emmc, or some other media?

The one in this repo: http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/raw/arm64/jammy/

Almost all the images I´m using are from that repo

dmesg was not showing anything relevant, but I will flash it again (mate version) and I will review again.

Thank you

These figures are booting from internal emmc, that is why its crazy and there should be something wrong.

Yes, I was hoping dmesg could reveal IO errors with eMMC.
Also check CPU temperature, maybe it's throttling.

M1S is not an ultra-high-performance SBC that can replace a desktop PC. However, it is clear that it is a low-power, high-cost-effective device.
In the case of Ubuntu 20.04.06 server OS, it boots in 10 ~ 11 seconds after connecting the power cable and displays the login prompt. It boots from internal eMMC.
For reference, the kernel version I use is 5.10.160-202401292001.

Check your governor settings. The default "performance" governor might help to increase the system responsiveness.

Code: Select all

odroid@server:~$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor
performance
performance
performance
performance
And run 7zip benchmark to check if you have a defective unit or not.
sudo apt install p7zip-full

Code: Select all

odroid@server:~$ 7z b

If the total MIPS value is higher than 4000, your CPU and RAM on the M1S might be fine at least.

You think it's perhaps waiting for networking?

Ubuntu is known for it, isn't it?

Generally showing us a complete dmesg output might help.
