Ubuntu 23.04 image for ODROID-M1?
It seems that 23.04 includes a kernel that should work with the M1, so can we expect an official image soon? I am hoping that this will enable me to get working support for 5.1 sound via HDMI.
Thanks
Thanks

I didn't try this because it seems that the 20.04 and 22.04 both didn't have the necessary config files for HDMI 5.1. I thought that 23.04 was now the full public version, so it should be easier?

The standard images appear in network install inside petitboot
Unfortunately, there is no 23.04 image yet

Re: Ubuntu 23.04 image for ODROID-M1?
It's disappointing to see Odroid falling behind on support for the M1. It's been over a year since Ubuntu 22.04 was released, yet Odroid still ships the M1 with 20.04. Their lack of commitment to keeping this board updated is concerning.
I plan to move my M1 to Armbian once my eMMC module is delivered.
Armbian requires eMMC, since SPI booting doesn't support NVMe or USB drives.
Unfortunately Armbian doesn't support Petitboot either, which is a shame for both.
But for any future SBC purchases, I will look beyond just Hardkernel/Odroid.
Other brands seem much more invested in maintaining strong ARM SBC support and quick software upgrades.
Odroid simply hasn't demonstrated that same level of commitment for the M1 lately.
The only real advantage of Odroid is its community, that is really efficient,
While Armbian will allow me to upgrade my M1 to 22.04 and get a newer kernel once I have eMMC,
I'm open to more powerful boards for future projects.
Odroid has lost a customer by failing to provide adequate long-term support for the M1.
I'll be evaluating other manufacturers that are more responsive and stay on top of ARM innovations.

Re: Ubuntu 23.04 image for ODROID-M1?
Not really. We have community driven support of Ubuntu 22.04 with upstream kernel 6.1.Fred From France wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 7:54 pmIt's disappointing to see Odroid falling behind on support for the M1. Ubuntu 22.04 can be installed through the Netboot Installer method in Petitboot and it can be installed to NVMe or USB storage directly. For this, run udhcpc and netboot_default in the command line of Petitboot after ensure the ethernet connection in your home network. Then you will have Netboot Installer menu and can start from there.
As I mentioned, Ubuntu 22.04 is based on community support and it's been updated from time to time with ODROID specific patches on top of upstream kernel. Why this is not official support from Hardkernel is that upstream kernel could have missing hardware features such as video decoder, NPU or ISP. The packages for ODROID-M1 with Ubuntu 22.04 are maintained by several people including me. We do not have Ubuntu 23.04 which is not LTS version yet but I believe we will have 24.04 which would be LTS version.

Re: Ubuntu 23.04 image for ODROID-M1?
As 23.10 will include kernel 6.5, it seems, I assume that the mainline version should work OK?
I hope to finally get HDMI 5.1 to work properly.
Thanks, John

Re: Ubuntu 23.04 image for ODROID-M1?
The Linux kernel version or OS version has no effect on the operation of the multi-channel audio output function. Even in my aging ODROID-N2's CoreELEC running the old kernel 4.9, any of 5.1-channel and 7.1-channel output through the AV receiver operates normally. An important point is whether the media playback program can extract the stream of the audio track and properly transmit it to HDMI or SPDIF. Even in the days of kernel 3.8, which was over 11 years ago, multi-channel audio output was possible.
Anyway, what type of audio codec are you trying to play using what sound rendering device? Are you trying to implement 5.1ch by connecting a 6-channel sound DAC directly to an HDMI audio channel extractor/splitter?

Re: Ubuntu 23.04 image for ODROID-M1?
I am using straight PCM 5.1 to my Denon receiver - Roon remote requires ALSA support and it seems that HDMI 2.0 works fine, but HDMI 5.1 only passes 2.0 currently on ODROID M1 using Ubuntu.stmicro wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 3:04 pmThe Linux kernel version or OS version has no effect on the operation of the multi-channel audio output function. I tried editing the ALSA config files and can get 24 bit support to work in 2.0, but cannot get any 5.1 to work.
I know that the receiver end is fine, as I can use my Mac Mini for HDMI 5.1 sound using the same cables.
