[SOLVED] Sd card slot not working

Post by rasmu »

Hello,

- I bought 2 Odroid-M1 and I can't boot from SD Card slot with several Linux images (Ubuntu-server and desltop and armbian).
I used images from your wiki->M1.

If I insert the same SD Card with the same Linux images in a USB/Card reader in M1, Linux is booting well.
I tried 2 different SD Cards, one is completely new and is from Sandisk.

- I tried to write the same Ubuntu image in 2 differents SD Cards : I plug one in SD Card slot and the other one in USB Card reader adapter.
In Petitboot, at the top I can see it detects SD card located in USB Card Reader adapter but not the other one located in SD card slot.
When I boot on Ubuntu, if I type "df" I only see /dev/sde1 and /dev/sde2 which correponds to the SD Card located in the USB Card reader.

So I suspect maybe something's wrong with SD card slot in my 2 M1, maybe driver related ?

I attached dmesg and lshw.
Do you need more logs ?

Thank you very much for your help.

What's the brand/model of your SD card?
Will you take a photo of Petitboot screen after run the command mount when SD card is inserted without USB storage?

Hello,

I have a Sandisk Ultra microsd xc I class 10 A1 (https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00486741.html) and Co4G China microsd hc classe 4.

Before typing mount, I put Sandisk SD card in sd card slot and the poor one in USB Card Reader.
So now, it's sdb1 and sd2b that are mounted and the 2 are related to the SD card plugged in the USB card reader.

See mount.log attached.

I tested the same Sandisk SD card with an armbian OS image on my XU4 directly on sd card slot and it's working well.

Thank you for your time.

Will you please check/show the output of Petitboot when SD card is inserted, no USB storage?
Also would be nice if you can share the output of the command ls -l /dev/mmcblk*.

Please find 3 captures of boot in attachment.
There isn't any /dev/mmcblk*

If there is no /dev/mmcblk*, I guess the SD slot is faulty unless the SD card is inserted incorrectly. Just make sure if the SD card is completely inserted again, if it still has a problem, please send an email to odroid at hardkernel dot com with the link of this thread if you have purchased from Hardkernel otherwise your local distributor for RMA.

1 day lost of testing, yaaay congratulation !
I was used on Raspberrypi to insert SD card with black part up, that's why I did the same with M1.

Ah yes, an SD card outline on PCB always helps plug it in correctly. I think XU4 had something like that?

And don't worry, at least putting uSD card flipped doesn't pose a threat of any electrical damage. :)

On my M1, I don't have outlines, there isn't any indication except "COM9".
On my XU4, it's indeed like your pic.

The thing is I was used that you can't insert wrongly a sd card eg my usb card reader and raspberrypi.
Maybe that could be changed in the future on your boards, having a visual help or a slot allowing only one insertion direction (second is best in my opinion) ?

I don't think it's that critical. I mean, I can't recall any user on this forum having similar problems in past year.

The outline probably could be added, as it bears no cost and low effort, but that's certainly not up to me.
However I did suggest adding an indication that this is a SD slot (among other silkscreen changes) and I was heard, so one can hope. :)

Changing a slot is a more complicated matter: designing and validating a new footprint, procuring a new type of components (and probably more expensive too), maybe recertifying the whole board for thousands of dollars. And finding a mechanically compatible slot that will work with existing accessories (case). I can't see that happening.
