C4 not booting

Post by human »

Hello

I've been using a C4 with Coreelec 9 for a couple of months now, also tried the new Coreelec 19 a month ago, no issues (except lack of app support). But the other day the screen was just black. Now I can get it to boot, just a black screen after hardkernel logo, red light is on, blue is flashing twice, the heatsink is cold, no LED activity on LAN, no ping. Tried multiple quality tested HDMI cables, monitors (signal is detected, either 1080 or 4k), sd cards, power supplies, imaging tools (RPI imager, Etcher, Rufus), images (official Ubuntus, Androids and Coreelecs), turned it on without anything connected, nothing...

On Ubuntu minimal I get a blinking cursor, no terminal, keyboard and mouse don't turn on. And once it started flashing red horizontal lines on the screen and then static.

Any other ideas?

Hello again

I manged to get an eMMC module and an USB-UART cable, attaching serial output during boot, if anyone can decipher it.
Libreelec has a black screen, Ubuntu blinking cursor and Android no signal. The kernel seems to be running, but it has issues outputting video? Also no LAN activity...

I've read the kernel log for Ubuntu and Android attached, I can see that the kernel have been started and runs, EDID has bee loaded.
Do you see log in prompt on UART when you start Ubuntu Minimal?
Also, in the boot.ini in Ubuntu Minimal image, can you change the value of disablehpd to true?
I an concerning the the HDMI port is damaged.

No login on serial, just stops where I left it in the text files. disablehpd to true, no effect.

I also thought it was the HDMI, but it's physically ok and the boot logo and cursor display fine, so I am thinking GPU and hoping it's software... But the screen did go to full static a couple of times, so it may be the HDMI...

Could monitor resolution be a problem? I'm testing on 1440 and 4k, it looks ok, no blur or edges, so it detects and uses the right one, but would a native 1080 make a difference? (I only have 1050 on hand)

Do you mean you have tested with 3 display hardwares, 1440 and 4K are fine but 1080P is not?

I don't get a login on serial, attaching log with disablehpd set to true.

I've tested on 4k and 1440. I haven't tested 1050 and 1080.

That's strange, everything looks normal except it stucks and not mounting the root file system.
By the way, do you use Hardkernel's eMMC...right?

Can you remove rootwait in boot.ini and capture the log again?

Code: Select all

Attaching disablehdp true, booted from SD
and with removed rootwait, with un-pluging the monitor, the C4 seems to detect it...

Thanks for the logs. It's strange...I can see you have plug out and in the HDMI cable with 1920x1080 display which is in the log, but not showing anything more than that. You can see the Hardkernel boot logo, so this does not mean HDMI hardware is damaged. I can see the eMMC 32GB with two partitions in the kernel log, but it does not mounted or booting is not completed, that's why you are not able to see anyting after Hardkernel logo and you can not ping.

I suspect if eMMC is wear which does not make sense to me, or your ODROID-C4 is not in good condition so not properly working. But this is also does not make sense if the blue LED keeps blinking and HDMI cable is detected when you plug in and out.

Can you try to boot with SD card if you have? If it boots, your eMMC is damaged or not working.
Or can you try this if you still have an energy?

I wish the warranty for your ODROID-C4 or eMMC is still valid... :(

The trouble started with an SD card, that's why i bought an eMMC.
Also, been booting the whole time concurrently of an SD, attached logs in previous posts with SD in the name.

No dice with the Experimental Ubuntu Bios thingy, attaching log(s).

I guess we can call it... Thank you for everything! :)

The eMMC (hopefully) doesn't need warranty and the C4 has already been honored (by getting the eMMc), I'm just playing around, if there's still hope... Since supply issues prevent me from just getting it replaced.
I bought an RPI4, but it's not that great for just KODI...

Any other suggestions for a streaming SBC? (HDMI 2.0, HDR, ...)
Besides the N2 ;)

Wait, you have tried the Petitboot for ODROID-C4 and it does not show the Petitboot screen, only have the screen with the logs?
If so, this convince me that your ODROID-C4 is unstable for some reason since the Petitboot is very small Linux system running on the memory only. Maybe you should replace the board if warranty is valid.

And ODROID-C4 is good hardware for video and streaming box. S905X3 on ODROID-C4 have better video features than S922X on ODROID-N2Plus.

The warranty is valid, supply isn't... I got a refund.

Anyone know where in the EU can i get a C4? Or how much does it cost nowadays to ship and tax one here?
