HC4 does not recognize SATA SSD - ubuntu-20.04-4.9-20201212

Post by dariol »

I've got issue with SSD disk in HC4.
HC4 boots with SD card, Ubuntu 20.04 minimal image, latest available.

Code: Select all

Linux version 4.9.241-65 (root@builder_n2) (gcc version 7.5.0 (Ubuntu/Linaro 7.5.0-6ubuntu2) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Dec 23 14:19:21 UTC 2020
However, SSD disk is not recognized

Code: Select all

ahci 0000:01:00.0: version 3.0
ahci 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0003)
ahci 0000:01:00.0: SSS flag set, parallel bus scan disabled
ahci 0000:01:00.0: AHCI 0001.0200 32 slots 2 ports 6 Gbps 0x3 impl IDE mode
ahci 0000:01:00.0: flags: 64bit ncq sntf stag led clo pmp pio slum part ccc sxs
ahci 0000:01:00.0: enabling bus mastering
scsi host0: ahci
scsi host1: ahci
ata1: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)
ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)
SSD disk is: Kingston 480GB A400 SATA 3 2.5" Internal SSD SA400S37/480G

Tested with both SATA slots. Haven't yet tested disk with desktop, but disk and Odroid are new.

Are there any issues with SSD drives and HC4?

Do you use 12V/4A DC adapter?
Can you try with other storage if you have extra?

I use 15V4A adapter

Don't have other disk at the moment, it will take a while to get new one, lockdown, new year and all, delivery takes time.

Is there a list of SSD models confirmed to be working?

Sorry...we do not have such model list, tested various vendors HDD and SDD. Unfortunately, Kingstone SSD is not tested. Strange thing is that there is another user who had same issue with Kingstone SSD. Based on the log file you attached, the problem looks like same. It would be nice if you can temporary mount a HDD or a SDD for testing, not installing anything and if it does not work, then...it would be faulty HC4 issue.
viewtopic.php?p=316546#p316546

Would you be able to test with another OS image?

I've tried with Ubuntu 20.10 20201218 - Linux kernel v5.10
Same result, no SSD disk

I'll try with some other disk. Also I'll confirm if this SSD is OK.

I bought 2x HC4, one was gift ... have to check on that one as well.

Ok, it would be nice if you can test another HC4. If it works, the current HC4 is faulty and need to go RMA. Where did you purchase them?

I have tested Kingston SSDs, two of them, same model, they are OK.
Neither works with HC4.

I have tested Seagate ST1000LM014 and it works with HC4.
Pic in attachment, Kingston SSD and Seagate are connected to HC4, only Seagate works.

To me it looks like issue is with Kingston SSD compatibility.

I bought HC4 at https://rpishop.cz/
Haven't tested second unit, but at this point I expect it's OK, no need for RMA yet.

Next week I'll have Samsung EVO and if it works, it's all about Kingston

Thank you for your update and glad to know it's not sorely HC4 issue. Still it does not make sense to me that Kingston SSD does not work. Sorry for not testing Kingston SSD, but I am sure Samsung EVO 850/860 will definately work.
For sure, is that Kingston A400 SSD?

Thanks, there is one user who has the same issue and one also uses A400 (1TB). I've not tested A400 and @odroid had ordered the same model, so I could test it early next week.

I tested HC4 with Kingston A400 120Gb and 240Gb versions and both worked without any issues.
Also, Samsung Evo 860 SSD 250Gb and 500Gb and both worked fine on HC4, Same for Crucial MX500 250Gb and 500Gb SSD's.
I have a HC4 A400 480Gb as well but it's being currently used on a server and have not way to currently test it on HC4.

Did you manage to get a disk and try it out? I told ameriDroid that I'd hold off on the RMA until I heard back from you.

I was only able to test new Kingston A400 240GB model and it works without a failure. Higher capacity models are not available in the domestic market unfortunately.

I also found a couple of links that A400 works after firmware update with other Linux PC.

For me also it does not work. Kingston A400 240GB is not recognized by the Debian or Ubuntu installer.
dmesg shows SATA channel down. The disk works well under Windows and there is no newer firmware.
Must be a buggy disk controller or driver on the Odroid side.
Wish I googled prior to buying .....

Is there any driver debug mode that can provide some more logs for troubleshooting ?

Thanks

I've tested brand new A400 240GB with several HC4 devices and it works without failure. Can you please provide the error what you've found in the kernel log?

Currently, two models are reported not work with ODROID-HC4 and Samsume EVO, LEXAR, WD SSD are working.

I bought some German INNOVATION.IT SSD 1 TB. It works on PC (Linux Mint on 5.4.0-110-generic). But NOT on HC4, it is not recognized at all, no mention in dmesg, nothing. A tried in petitboot (latest) also in installed debian 11 from network.
Maybe it's large capacity is a problem?
Or if I buy Lexar, WD or EVO will the 1 TB size work (can somebody confirm)?

1TB drives work. Show us the dmesg output when you plug it in a regular PC, maybe there's a clue.

The usb dock exposes a different controller. You should try it connected directly in your PC. But, it should work.... What power ratings are written on the disk?
