HC4 no keyboard usb working

Post by nikoli707 »

I have a new HC4 picked up from Ameridroid here in USA. I plugged everything in and it powers on to the default screen, but i cannot get any keyboard to work. I tried a Logitech k400 wireless, a GMK Pro custom keyboard (usb-c), and finally i got ahold of a generic standard oem HP keyboard. Nothing is allowing me to do anything.

I was figuring maybe it just needed drivers or something, so i etched the ubuntu 20.xxxx whatever on the odroid hc4 page, but it just brings up the login screen and again i have no keyboard input. So i flashed back to the latest petiteboot 20201222.

I have tried unplugging plugging in many times, so im sort of at a loss. I came up with an idea to plug my phone into the USB to see if any power was being output from the port, also a usb cord that has a little light on it, but there is no power.

Is there something im missing?

Edit: i am using the 15v4a odroid power supply

I don't think you are missing anything to use USB port.
If you are sure that USB keyboard, it's good idea to plug your phone to see if USB host is powering, please do contact Ameridoid if RMA is valid for your case.

Does the keyboard work at least in the initial menu/Petitboot after starting?
If Petitboot works, which version does it report?

I had a similar issue with the 2nd HC4 I ordered in late June.
Keyboard worked in Petitboot, but no more after the debian 10 net installer showed the first menu. Tried the debian 11 net installed, keyboard worked - until the installation was done and and the keyboard stopped working as soon as the login screen showed up. Even after rebooting at least 3 times.
Back to Petitboot, tried the debian 10 net installer again, and surprise, no freeze this time. Installation worked, keyboard works for the local login... but only 100Mbit on the same port and cable my first HC4 is running with gigabit... checking and comparing the eth0 on my first and second HC4 with several commands, switching after 1h port+cables and, surprise, now also gigabit on the second HC4?! Not sure if that was because the second one was not attached to power for 2-3 month if the second HC4 has an issue?

It should be 20201222 if you have the latest version, otherwise please do run pb-update in the command line of the Petitboot after connecting an ethernet cable.

What's the vendor and model of your keyboard? Doesn't your keyboard work at all at Debian 11 but still work at the Petitboot?

Hard to tell whether or not it's HC4 problem, please do let me know what's the output of uname -a on your Debian installation and keep on your eyes whether your ethernet keeps connecting 1Gbps. A month ago, the kernel for HC4 had problematic ethernet driver which is fixed 2 weeks ago.

As keyboards I tried an older Apple wired TLK (Model A1242) and a Cherry RS 6000 USB ON (G83 - 6919), both had the same issue at the first tries. Within petitboot they both worked, at the first attempt they stopped as soon as the netinstaller image had showed up. In the debian 11 netinstaller both worked, but after the installation was done, as soon as debian 11 had booted up and showed the login it didn't work anymore, even after rebooting. The second attempt to install debian 10 with the netinstaller worked, and both are working now.
Before running the first installation I did the pb-update.

I did a fresh clean netinstall just on that day (14th sept), uname -a says:
5.11.0-odroid-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 5.11.18-202108050550~buster (2021-08-04) aarch64 GNU/Linux

I turned the HC4 off on Tuesday with poweroff (having gigabit), the power plug was still connected and the power supply had always power. Today, after the startup it is back to 100Mbit, unplug and plug in the network cable and it switches to 1Gbit!? Hmm...
All attempts after that, always 1Gbit ... I'll keep an eye on that.
I noticed, the IRQ has changed? On my first it was 40, after I did an update/upgrade it is now 37 like on the second HC4?

Summary of keyboard status:
Petitboot - OK
Debian 10 Net Installer - OK
Debian 10 - NG
Debian 11 Netboot Installer - OK
Debian 11 - NG

Is this right? Then I believe it's not hardware issue but kernel config, so let me find out.

Hard to tell if it's purely HC4 issue if it connect 100Mbit network, please check/swap your ethernet cable or network port on your router.

Petitboot - ok

1st Debian 10 Net Installer attempt - NG - no USB keyboard input response, maybe freeze at the first installation step? Hard to tell > installation not possible due to the lack of input

1st Debian 11 Net Installer attempt - Not fully good
> Net installer - ok during the installation
> Installed OS - NG, no USB keyboard after the installation finished. Cursor was blinking if I remember correctly, reboots didn't help.

2nd Debian 10 Net Installer attempt - ok
> Net installer - ok
> Installed OS - ok

I also guess some an issue with the net installer or kernel.

I cross-checked it with the HC4 #1 I have, I switched ports and cable after the second / working Debian 10 installation, #1 had no issues with gigabit on any port and with any cable.
Started the #2 again, today #2 has again gigabit. Maybe not properly plugged in?
Currently no issue, I will report if it occurs again.
