Display is very slow/choppy

Post by webber » Fri May 15, 2020 9:17 am

I have a display ive been using on an n2(ubuntu) before and its been fine. I tried hooking it up to a c4(ubuntu) and it becomes very slow. Even when im doing something as simple as moving a window on the desktop. Is the c4 powerful enough to drive a 1920x1080p display at something like 30fps?

Try other window compositor options in Mate desktop tweaks.
As far as I remember, Marco (No compositor) or Metacity (No compositor) showed better performance.

If you don't need the VPU acceleration, consider using the Wayland powered Ubuntu OS image by @tobetter.

Selecting Marco (No composer) makes moving windows alot faster.
I'm still having problems with chromium however. I noticed the video mention that chromium is slow as well, webpages seem to load fast but scrolling is very slow. I'd like to avoid using firefox. Are there any currently known tweaks for Chromium? It seems to run alot better on a c2 and n2 than it does on a c4.

Did you feel a lot of difference between C4 and N2 both are running the same Mate desktop while you did web surfing on Chromiun?
Which version of Chromium did you run?

Yeah the n2 is smooth and natural with the tough screen im using. The c4 is choppy. It also seems to be unable to play even 480p youtube videos while the n2 could. I searched around the forum and it seems to be because theres no x11 gpu drivers yet? (viewtopic.php?f=203&t=38729&p=291376&hi ... um#p291376) I followed the advice in that thread and ran chromium with the flag --use-gl=none and it makes it a bit better but still not smooth.

Oh and the n2 is running 80 while the c4 is running 81. Wayland seems to have the mali drivers as an installable package too, shame x11 doesnt seem to have them yet, unless im mistaken. But yeah, i ran a benchmark and just scrolling webpages on 1080p the c4 is at 8fps while the n2 is at 30fps.

It seems its because i rotated the screen to set it to portrait mode(in the fbdev x11 config file i added Rotate "CCW"). When I unrotate it I get 50 fps. I did the same thing with the c2 and the n2 and the rotation didnt effect the performance and I think they werent using gpu acceleration either? So im a bit stumped as to why the c4 is doing this.

Edit: I looked into it and it seems that its using the newest version of xserver-xorg-video-fbdev 1.0.5 while the n2 is on 1.0.4.4. I did an apt-cache policy and it seems i dont have the option of downgrading either
