Power requirements for HC4 with HDD outside board

Post by Educampi »

Hi,

If I have the HDDs in an external self-powered case, and just need to connect the SATA data cables between HC4 and that case.

What are the power requirements for the HC4?
Do I still need to use the 15V/4A PSU?
Can it be dropped to 12V ?
Needs to remain 15V but can be lower current?

I would guess the requirements would go down, but I couldn' t find any details in the product page about consumption without HDDs.
Asking cause I' ll have a few HC4 connected to a single PSU and want to properly dimension it.

Thanks!

I had a quick look and a standard sata data won't fit the connector on the pcb. You'd need to cut some parts of the cable casing..

Thanks for replying.

I already have the cables to split that into the usual 7pin cable, I'm just wondering about the power consumption of the actual HC4 board.

I want to see if I can drive multiple using the 12v rail of a regular computer PSU.
Or If needing 15v, I can use a common 15v to power them, in which case wouldn't want to get 4A/per board when there's no need to power the drives.

I guess it would also help people who would power the drives from the board define if they need more or less depending if they use SSD or spinning drives.
Thanks!

You should wait for an official answer from Hardkernel, but my guess is - it should work with 12V. I'll try to test it tomorrow....

Edit: Just tested with 12V/2A PSU and it booted fine. Based on the power ratings, the board alone under stress shouldn't need more than 12V/400mA.

Not official response here.
I have 500W ATX power on my desk and 8x ODROID-N2 + 1x ODROID-HC2 + 2x 2TB HDD are running for 24/7 and additionally 3-4 ODROID-N2/HC4/C4 are ocassionally running at the same time for test and development. I also use 12V power for ODROID-HC4 with 2 SSD occasionally, have no issue even once with it yet.

I believe 12Volt/1Amp must be enough if your HDDs use a separated power source.
