How to upgrade Debian from 11 to 12 (for OMV7) on HC4

Post by garcea »

Hi @tobetter!
I use OMV6 on top on Debian 11 on HC4 (installed from petitboot) - since 03/03.2024 OMV7 its alive (not stable yet) - to get new kernels I must update also the sources from ppa.linuxfactory.co.kr - is it enough to change bullseye with bookworm or should I add other sources? If I remember well I have main, contrib and non-free on my OMV6 install.

Technically you can replace bullseye to bootworm in the files under /etc/apt/* and run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade in order to upgrade the system. But, you will have some packages tied to bullseye and can see them when you run dpkg -l | grep bullseye after updating. Then you will need to install them manually using sudo apt install <package_name>.

Tried to be up-to-date today, seems like there is an issue with the repo? Before upgrading to Debian bookworm wanted to clear all pkgs. Should I just ignore and edit the ppa with bookworm and upgrade to OMV 7 from their cli omv-release-upgrade

Code: Select all

The issues are no more, managed to update yesterday (still on OMV6/Debian 11). All good! Will do the upgrade to OMV7 this weekend.
About the ppa - should I go just for replacing bullseye with bookworm or there is another deb source that is needed for Debian 12?

Code: Select all

deb http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr bullseye main
deb http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr bullseye non-free
deb http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr bullseye contrib

You need to replace bullseye to bootworm for sure since they have their own packages.
After updating, please do run dpkg -l | grep bullseye.

I guess the error is not so dependent to the packages from my server, so maybe you would ask the same to OMV forum or share the full output here.
root@debian:~# dpkg -l | grep bullseye
ii bootscript-odroidc4 5:2021.03+202403141305~bullseye arm64 Boot script to run by U-boot

ii odroid-grub2 5:24.01+202403132311~bullseye arm64 GRUB2 base package for ODROID with mainline kernel[/code]
You have incomplete package update, so you need to run this to finish it.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install odroid-base=5:24.01+202403132311~bookworm odroid-alsa=5:24.01+202403132311~bookworm odroid-grub2=5:24.01+202403132311~bookworm

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

Setting up php-common (2:93) ...
when I go from here the server is restarting

https://forum.openmediavault.org/index. ... e-to-omv7/

I have raise the issues but dunno what went bad - I can ssh, can access the shares via winscp, the plugins are migrated but no GUI access anymore. And yeah, getting that error when trying to install.

See https://docs.openmediavault.org/en/stab ... ebian.html as it says NOT to run a GUI on the os. It didnt say it would disable it, just not install if one is detected.

There is not GUI on the OS - I am talking about the OMV GUI from browser.

Restored a backup of OMV6 from last week, managed to be back on line. Tried again the upgrade steps, seems something is crashing - still that php-common is killing me softly. Another weird thing, if I go on external device and keyboard for headless Debian, its still bullseye but in SSH is bookworm.

Restored a backup of OMV6 from last week, managed to be back on line. Tried again the upgrade steps, seems something is crashing - still that php-common is killing me softly.

Code: Select all

root@debian:~# sudo omv-salt deploy run nginx phpfpm

When you have a chance to do the same, please check the version of the package cpufrequtils by running dpkg -l | grep cpufrequtils and share the output of it.

Re: How to upgrade Debian from 11 to 12 (for OMV7) on HC4

Post by garcea »

@tobetter - seems like I can’t upgrade safely to Debian 12 - can I use a Debian 12 iso to go to OMV7?
I mean this image: https://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/r ... /bookworm/

Or should I go for netboot install and rebuild from scratch the OMV?

Still having the same issue?

Maybe you could start over with the new image uploaded just now.
https://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/r ... 318.img.xz

If you have a problem again, please let me know how you installed. Maybe I could try the same.

Should I burn the server image directly on sd card or should I go from the netboot install?
Or try the same path on omv-release-upgrade?

Looks like Debian 12 thing: https://forum.openmediavault.org/index. ... /&pageNo=1 - but there are workarounds, I didn’t have the time to setup OMV7, was busy to restore the old OMV6 after the failling upgrade.

Re: How to upgrade Debian from 11 to 12 (for OMV7) on HC4

Post by garcea »

Hi, back with some news.
No luck upgrading from 11 to 12 through OMV - php7 remains and php8.2 cannot be loaded. Tried many workarounds abound php and nginx - cannot get into the web UI from OMV. I am using atm. the OMV6, its working.

About the fresh install, there is something that brakes everything - Debian 12 from netboot install is configuring by default end0 (ipv6) instead of eth0 (ipv4). I can use root or user for debian login but no connection to the internet. Tried some workarounds for blacklisting the ipv6 in sysctl.conf or modeprobe.d but no luck.
Burning the HC4 server is ok, I have access to SSH, I can add users but when I do the instalment of OMV7 through the script the ipv6 its taking over and I cannot do anything - no ssh, no OMV7 GUI, no internet.
Is there some workarounds to prevent netboot install from ipv4 or to blacklist in the kernel/grub the ipv6?
The ifconfig out I can only show by taking pictures, no SSH available.

Should I apply this workaround>

Code: Select all

To disable IPv6 completely:

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Add the following two lines:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="ipv6.disable=1 quiet"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="ipv6.disable=1"

Save the changes and

sudo update-grub

Is that same problem or different happened with the same SD card?

now i tried severals sd-cards and just in this moment 1 can see deb 12 and login via ordoid/odroid
the system is on Sd-card an I can boot now with deb 12 (via sd-card)...

I took https://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/r ... 318.img.xz

the eth0 is up (without doing any additional commands) and i can ssh in

when I use the installer-script
sudo wget -O - https://github.com/OpenMediaVault-Plugi ... er/install | sudo bash

it starts the installation - hopefully in the disk and not the sd-card....

....

Code: Select all

Creating config file /etc/php/8.2/mods-available/bcmath.ini with new version
Setting up libdatrie1:arm64 (0.2.13-2+b1) ...
Setting up ncal (12.1.8) ...
Setting up python3-colorama (0.4.6-2) ...
Setting up anacron (2.3-36) ...
at this time, on the display i got messages of a Kernel panic
CPU3 ...

rebooting with new installed image on sd-card and trying again.....

different approach:
sudo wget -O omv_install.sh https://github.com/OpenMediaVault-Plugi ... er/install
chmod +x omv_install.sh
sudo ./omv_install.sh

-> seems to work, i can login into OMV. :D Thank you @tobetter

So, the last thing to do: how can I install OMV onto my Harddisk instead of the sd-card?? :geek:

When you install OS to Harddisk, not SD card, so HDD becomes a boot media then I believe you can install OMV over there.
In order to install OS, specifically Debian 11, you can use Netboot Installer from Petitboot on ODROID-HC4.
In the screen of Petitboot, go for Exit to shell and run netboot_default in the command line then you will have Netboot Installer menu when you back to Petitboot.
You can start from there and select your HDD as a primary storage for the boot media instead of SD card.

so you think i have to do an new install?
I tried this several times and allways endet in a desaster.
I costs me more tha a week to get to this point. So I thought the last attempt is to install it an SD and clone it to hdd.
Anyway - I will make a backup of the sd-card and try it a last time with installation as you suggested.

Thank you again for your help!!!!

If you want to transfer OS setup in SD to HDD, you can simply dd from SD to HDD, and use Petitboot to boot from HDD.
But you need to resize the root file system in HDD and you must remove SD card from its slot.

Its been a while, but ON MY C4 with usb3-ssd I did a netboot using petitboot install of 11 and then later upgraded to 12. Seems to be working well unlike dietpi which the last apt update trashed it and now wont boot :-(
Not sure how much difference between c4 and hc4 but I am pleased with bookworm on c4 :-)

@tobetter, about the netboot install - I had time this weekend to reinstall from scratches but no luck getting connection to linuxfactory repos - I reinstalled the petitboot (believed it was corrupted). Should I avoid the weekends for this kind of operations? exit to shell, netboot_default, exit and no images where to choose from.

The server is alive, but sometime in certain area user is not able to have a connection. No idea why since I am not the place. Still you don't have the connection today?
Did you check whether your HC4 have IP address?

Yes, I have the same IP reserved in the router devices list, I can boot safely into OMV 6. Today I didn’t have the chance - at the office. I will try if I have time tonight. I saw that I can choose IPv4 in petitboot for booting, maybe I will circumvent the infamous end0, who knows? If I flash on sdcard an iso with Debian arm bookworm from Debian mirrors, do I loose something like WOL or panfrost drivers? As last resort I am asking if I am enable to perform the netboot install (upgrading from OMV6 to 7 isn’t an option now).

The kernel package from the repo, ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr, provide custom kernel for ODROID. Therefore, even if you have installed the Debian with official installer image and boot with it, you would not have some features.

Not sure since I've never tried.

If you still like to use Netboot Installer, you can flash this image to SD card and start it from Petitboot without running netboot_default command.
https://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/installe ... nst.img.xz

If you prefer to use and flash prebuilt OS image, download this image and flash it to memory card or HDD/SDD. The image itself is outdated but you will have the same result once you run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade after booting.
https://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/r ... 318.img.xz

By the way, I've tried to install OMV7 on top of fresh Debian Bookworm and unfortunately it never finishes after logs below and I have no idea why.

@tobetter - I am giving up at OMV7, atm. No luck with everything - I fixed the ipv6 issue, but OMV7 crashed the installation or I got a regular UI user access - no luck
. The ntp trick isnt ok, OMV7 is using chrony not ntp anymore, if you reinstall it it will uninstall the OMV.
I will stay on OMV6 how much as I can - its what I need atm.
Thanks for support, but I will wait until OMV7 matures.

@garcea I did a netboot install of Bookworm on my C4. Then thanks to your post I fixed grub so I get an IP. I then followed the instructions from https://forum.openmediavault.org/index. ... post371929 and installed OMV7. But that failed on an nginx error. So I did https://techglimpse.com/nginx-error-add ... -solution/ and still fail. Keeps adding back the commented line. Funny though after commenting it the second time and trying the apt install again it finished after taking a long time on the systemd stuff.

I then did:

omv-confdbadm populate
omv-salt deploy run hosts
cat /etc/issue

and it looks fine and I can pull it up in my browser!

So using the journalctl -xeu nginx.service command I was able to see the errors.

BUT now there is no internet, only local access as dns lookups fail. I will keep messing with it but hopefully this gives you some clues. My other deb12 install works great but it was an 11 I upgraded to 12. NOT a fresh 12 netboot install as that appears to need more work.

Hi guys,
Finally I managed to setup OMV7, re-mount the RAID matrix and restart the docker containers. :D :D :D :D
Here is the path, hope I didn’t miss something:
- burn on the micro sdcard the server image for HC4 from March the 18th
- perform the apt-get update && apt-get upgrade with odroid user, got the latest pkgs
- no issues with network , the image has already the workaround with eth0 -, from putty I launch the OMV script and it installed OMV7 successfully
- lost network after reboot, eth0 is no more into the system - I went and deleted tobetter /etc/netplan/01-netcfg.yaml and push for sudo dhclient end0 and I got internet again
- performed sudo omv-upgrade and a lot of packages were installed - something related to the new debian repos
- performed sudo omv-firstaid and went to setup the network, the clock, the workbench
- login in from the ip with 80 port and started to redo the settings of the former OMV6 all went ok (md0 went to md127 - RAID matrix)
- setup the permissions for shared folders, create a specialised user for docker, installed the containers and now all its back again.

Many Thanks @tobetter for the image and eth0/end0 workaronds!
