RTCShield causes plymouth crash on boot

Post by jordi7afe »

Hi!
I have a C4 board with the RTC Shield module and the VU7C display. It works with Ubuntu22 minimal with gnome-session gdm3 and plymouth for boot splash. Everything works fine before I configure the rtc to update the system clock on boot (when the network cable is unplugged).

I tried the two recommended ways on wiki (the official rc.local and the community way with the hwrtc.service), and a custom way by crontab. When I enable any of this methods, plymouth crashes (sometimes, like 1 of 10 tries).

Could anybody help me? Maybe I miss something...

Moved from XU4 sub-forum.

Anyway, which kernel version do you run?

Did you flash this minimal image and installed GDM3 on that?

Can you provide a boot log when it fails?

To me that looks like ok!
I don't think we support plymouth on our images at all.
On the minimal images that uses kernel 4.9 it shouldn't work.

You have the splash screen normally on boot?
If you try disabling plymount it works ok?

All works okay, plymouth included. The problem appears when I configure the RTCshield to sync time at boot, and the fail only appears a few times (like 1 of 10 or 1 of 20 tries). The system is actually up, because I can connect throught SSH and do any staff. But the screen is freezed with the plymouth spinner stopped.

Maybe you can try a delayed setup of the clock or earlier ?
Or trying disable plymonth.. I will try to replicate your issue here

When I tried to sync from crontab, issues were more frequently. Since I found the community way that sets a system service, it starts the most earlier possible way (I think). So I don't know how to start that earlier but maybe it could help.

PD: If you want to replicate it, I installed gnome-session, gdm3 and plymouth-theme-spinner
