Boot from ssd with OS image, or how can I get there?

Post by Enig123 »

I am wonder how can I get a booted OS directly from SSD with an HC4.

Is it possible to get there with a prebuild OS image? What's the possible way/steps to get boot from SSD directly, without sd card or mmc?

HC4 comes with the Petitboot installed and you can install Debian/Ubuntu to SSD using Netboot Installer method, this is the similar way or runs with the same packages you've installed to your ODROID-N2. If you want to install any other OS image, please let me know.

You can refert to the link.

Stock Armbian https://www.armbian.com/odroid-hc4/ with removing Petitboot and using upstream based u-boot from SPI. Then Armbian standard way. Choose boot from SPI, root on SATA when asked ...

Tobetter, is it possible to use UART and an usb keyboard to do the net-installing?

Also I am wondering if it's possible to install other OS, as OpenBSD, on the SSD and still get booted directly from it.

You can use USB keyboard, but not UART since the default console for Netboot Installer is HDMI. I wonder if you have an issue to use HDMI?
Basically the Petitboot can boot other OS if their boot script is compatible. I have no idea if OpenBSD can boot up, not tested. Are you willing to boot the OpenBSD from here?

With 128gb ssd's $20 at microcenter and a usb3 > sata adapter at $10 or less I would much prefer to load up OS's for my C4 on SSD.

Anyone have any experience with a setup this this? It would be nice to setup multiple slices with different os's to choose at boot.

FYI. Do homework and Google why its a bad idea (gamble) attaching disks via USB. Also this forum is full of posts on this manner.

With C4? None, unless you somehow solder SPI chip to it.

tobetter, any suggestion on the partisions layout when doing a net install of os like ubuntu?

My ordered product will arrive in several days, I'd like to prepare a little bit. The point is that I intend to keep an extended partition for database and storage etc.

Not sure if keep all www stuff in a seperate logic disk would be a good idea or how to do it.

I myself is not a proficient linux user, perhaps a lot for me to learn. Any hint to the right direction would be really appriciated.

Please note that, when you install Debian or Ubuntu using the Netboot Installer, the default partition layout will be 256MB for BOOT and the rest will be for the root file system. Having separated partition would be good idea, but personally dislike to use extended partition and do not want to create the data or /home directory in the same disk, only my personal preference.

If you need to store important data in a storage, I think you can use whole USB storage for the storage and OS can be installed into another SD or eMMC, even small USB stick and they would fair enough with 16~32 GB is fine for Linux server. Then you can mount large disk to there and run web OS.

You can refer to the pages from Google and I wish someone else can advise you more. :)

I am planning install os on a ssd via net installer, and boot from it without microsd nor emmc, if it's possible.

Any cons with this plan?

It's possible, AFAIK many users are doing so.
It's preference problem how one likes to manage a partition and file systems. :)

You can, currently the default upstream kernel with Netboot Installer for Debian Buster is 5.14 and keep being updated.

tobetter, what should I deal with the front partition of 256MB for BOOT? How do I choose manually? Is it FAT or else?

The last SSD I ordered with arrive tomorrow, so I will start to installing OS to that Samsung 850 Pro 256 GB SSD. I just need to be sure I am ready before actually doing it.

Why do you want to change it manually? Do you want to use single partition for all root file system? Then you can change the partition table while installing, you will have partition manager. Its partition type of it is ext2 and will be mounted /boot by default.

Samsung SSD will work greatly, had no issue with it. And do not worry much about new installation. Try the default installation before setting up other packages for your set up and check if OS set up, disk performance and its size are good for your needs. If you think what you need change specifically, do not hesitate to get help here.

Do you have Petitboot screen?
Have you tried with any other 1080P TV, not monitor?
Some display is not compatible instantly.

No signal at all as the monitor complained. Unfortunately I don't have any other monitor.

What do you mean 'instantly'?

I can give it another try with my Boox epaper as monitor, but not until I received a HDMI to micro HDMI cable I just ordered.

Tried with a TV, but it cannot display the whole picture.

Now the install options are there, how do I proceed to select one? I would prefer Debian 10 for now.

Edit: Now I know how to select install option. Just stuck at the next step, while I noticed the ethernet is down.

What do you mean "it cannot display the whole picture"? Maybe you can share a photo of your TV how it does shows you.
To install Debian 10, select Exit to shell and run netboot_default in the command line after connecting a ethernet cable. Then back to the Petitboot screen, you would have more menues and there would be Debian 10 Netboot Installer. Installation will start when you select this.

What's the version of Petitboot? The version is displayed on the left-top corner.

I was assuming the newly bought HC4 has the latest petiboot, was I wrong? How can I get it updated?

Thanks. Have been upgraded to 20201222, yet it still stuck after initiating the install. Any ideas what's wrong?

Now with the updated petiboot, the display became normal though.

Edit: And screen showed that downloading some files completed, before it went dark.

You can try Debian 11 if installer is the problem or network is.

Thanks. Have been upgraded to 20201222, yet it still stuck after initiating the install. Any ideas what's wrong?

Now with the updated petiboot, the display became normal though.
You can try Debian 11 if installer is the problem or network is.
Just tried Debian 11 with no luck.

Even tried Ubuntu 20.04, still in vain due to the same network issue.

Edit: Now I am wondering if there's something to do with different batches, due to lack of supply of certain components?

I guess it's not since you have updated the Petitboot through the network.
I've check all Debian and Ubuntu installers on my HC4 and they all work, I think server itself is fine.
You can also try "Ubuntu 20.04 Live System" in the menu if it works. Also would be nice if you capture a video how the screen goes.

Using "Ubuntu 20.04 Live System", the ethernet didn't went off. Yet still no next step appear after waiting for quite a period of time.

Perhaps it's same issue, different symptoms?

This quite take long since it download 230+MB.

Can you download an image and flash to SD card, try to boot it from the Petitboot. The default user account and password is odroid / odroid. Please do check the network with this image.

Will do.

And just pm you with the failed installing video.

BTW, I has 1Gbps fiber, so 230+MB will be finished with no time, only if no issues of course.

Now I am trying the SD card.

Unfortunately, the TV didn't show nothing after using petiboot interface to boot from it. The image works though, I can ssh to the HC4 without problem.

Edit: I have one HC1, N2 and N2+ each, and now HC4. Running with SDCard is no trouble for me. Just not what I am hoping for, I would prefer booting direct from SSD, and doing some real Linux stuff on it.

Edit2: Just tried SD image of Netboot Installer, still the same issue and cannot proceed.

tobetter, based on my testing results, is this issue known?

If it's not my sample's hardware fault, I believe there must be some way to resolve it.

I have not reported that the Netboot Installer is not launched so far, the video clip you sent me is also that OS does not start after Petitboot. There were several users with similar issues, but never seen the Netboot Installer does not start and not sure when you say "not proceed" means the Netboot Installer screen does not come or Netboot Installer is started but stuck at some point.

Also you had tested other OS from SD card, they seem to work so I believe hardware itself is fine as of now. Obviously you have to test the device stability after installation.

I guess two reasons, 1) The Netboot Installer does not boot on your HC4 which is new to me. So please check the blue LED at side if it's blink or off after selecting the Netboot Installer in the Petitboot. 2) The Netboot Installer is started and the blue LED blinks without showing any picture on your display. This could be happen when your display is not compatible or use a DVI singal on HDMI port. Please do change the port on your display and try another 1080P TV, not monitor for sure.

If this does not work, you can flash OS image to your SSD as well. I have OS image to flash, you can test with SD card first.

1) The blue light was blinking when the issue occurred.

I am not sure if the install start or not, but before it went wrong there's message shown that some file for installation was downloaded.

2) I am afraid I don't have other tv or monitors for further testing. It will be okay if dd the img to ssd will work though.

Not sure how can I do partition on a running system, if I would like to costomizing partitioning. Any suggestions or hints are appreciated.

The blinking blue LED is a good sign, since it blinks only when Linux kernel is running. Which means, for me, at least the Netboot Installer is started but no picture. The message what you've seen downloading is about Petitboot download kernel blobs.

Let's try this, when you run netboot_default you will have another boot entry for Debian 10 (Buster) which ends with (DVI). This time, let's try this first and try the original Debian 10 menu entry if it does not work. I've added kernel parameter to enforce DVI mode. (crossfinger)

Well...for partitioning, you need a some skill if you go for copying OS images. Otherwise, Netboot Installer will help you when you have a picture.

Update: Thanks for tobetter's work, I've been able to install Buster via the new DVI option.

Just chose whatever the isntaller's default for partitioning, didn't give up the whole disk though. I have reserved half space for further need, like a separate partition for a special mount point, etc..

So...now the problem is solved?

Entering the installed Debian 10 via petiboot interface still result with no output/blackscreen to the TV though.

Since my usage is a headless server, so yes the issue is resolved. Hope you'll keep the dvi option in case a re-installation or someone else are in need.
