HC4 blank screen after start, when reset button on boots from SDCARD ok

Post by sarnowak »

Hi friends,
I purchased new ODROID HC4, because I want to use it as a simple NAS with two RED WD drives plugged in SATA ports.

I'm struggling with how to make it boot from sdcard by default.
When i start Odroid without sdcard/harddrives plugged in, but with keyboard and HDMI/DVI monitor plugged in, I see nothing on monitor (I was expecting to see Petit boot to get in to shell and delete it as suggested somewhere).
However it simply does nothing - or to be precise, I don't see anything on LCD.

I then flashed ubuntu on SDCARD and was able to start it - however always with reset button ON while starting.
Ubuntu starts, network works and everything is OK.
However I of course do not want to do this every time - as the box should be in technical room and must be able to start after power outage on its own from SDCARD.

I browsed google, tried different hdmi cables different lcd monitors but I am unable to set the Odroid so it boots from SDCARD by default.
ANy help pls. Thank you very much in advance.

When you have blank screen without SD card or HDD on your HC4, do you see a blue LED blinks? If it blinks, the problem is Petitboot draws nothing to your LCD.
Are you able to try any other 1080P TV and see if Petitboot appears?

Both Blue and Red leds are on - no blinking.
Then you will need to recover the Petitboot first.

1. Download the image and flash it to SD card.
http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/pe ... 222.img.xz
2. Download this file and copy it into the first partition of SD card flash at first step, the file name must be spiboot.img, you need to replace it on SD card.
http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/pe ... 220317.img
3. Press the black button on bottom like when you boot Ubuntu and seel if updating starts or how is the BLUE led.

For this, it's better to test with 1080P TV.

Thank you very much for your quick reply.
Now I see Petit menu which is great (works on hdmi/dvi cable).
But cannot do anything with keyboard :( this thing is driving me crazy.
Tried two different keyboards, one native USB one PS2 with PS2/USB adapter..
Any ideas pls?
Thanks in advance!

Do you see the LED lits on your keyboard when connected to HC4?
Also are you able to try any other peripheral with LED, mouse or USB card reader, to see if USB port works?
Alternative, are you able to boot any OS from Petitboot and check your USB?

No LED on keyboards lit.. tried to push numlock .. doesn't work.
But very good advice - i put in optical mouse (lucky i had one spare in box somewhere) - and it doesn't turn that red mouse led on.
So something's wrong with USB then it seams.. no power there.
Has Odroid any settings that would enable/disable USB?

USB port is always on by defalt, hmm....I concern that your HC4 also have USB port issue that a component is damaged.
Do you have a multimeter and can measure a voltage if you can open HC4?

No voltage there at all..
I was wondering.. I found this page where they say it should be possible to erase petit from Ubuntu too:
https://www.armbian.com/odroid-hc4/
odroidhc4:~:# ls -ltr /dev/mtd*
crw------- 1 root root 90, 0 Nov 6 21:38 /dev/mtd0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 31, 0 Nov 6 21:38 /dev/mtdblock0
crw------- 1 root root 90, 1 Nov 6 21:38 /dev/mtd0ro
odroidhc4:~:# flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0 0
Erasing 4 Kibyte @ fff000 -- 100 % complete
odroidhc4:~:#

But I don't see any /dev/mtd* device
root@odroid:/home/odroid# ls -ltr /dev/mtd*
ls: cannot access '/dev/mtd*': No such file or directory

First I thought I cannot see this mtd* because there was no Petit.. but as I flashed Petit now already, and still don't see /mtd0 .. weird.

I doubt the faulty USB port...when did you purchase your HC4 and from where?

If you have booted Armbian, well...I don't know about it actually.
But if you like to remove Petitboot, you can erase from there, not Armbian.

I purchased the unit a month ago from a local store with things like this (Raspberry PI, etc.).
I wrote them and technician replied that recently they had multiple complaints with USB port not working so I'm shipping this unit back for replacement.

Once again thank you very much for your quick help.

Well, replacement unit came and USB works OK - using wireless keyboard/mouse with usb dongle - no problem.
So I went on and while pressing button I booted from SDCard with petit boot as you suggested.
Then from console I ran:
# flash_eraseall /dev/mtd0
# flash_eraseall /dev/mtd1
# flash_eraseall /dev/mtd2
# flash_eraseall /dev/mtd3

After all finished OK, I powered off the unit, switched SDCARDs (petitboot -> ubuntu) and all works OK now.
Ubuntu boots right away.
Thanks again!
