Battery Charging Issue (white board version)

Post by WxMan » Tue Jun 23, 2020 12:18 am

Hello:

I seem to have an issue with my OGA. I have it on the charger (5V 2A) and the charge light is flashing which should indicate that it is charging. However, Batocera is not showing an increase in battery percentage after several hours. I measured the battery voltage which was 3.7V. I hooked up a multimeter to the board and I am only getting 3.6V in on the DC jack and 3.6V on the DC out pin. That should be 5V and is probably why the battery is not charging. I've tried numerous 5V adapters and am getting the same result. Not sure where to go here.

Just a few more notes here:

1. Have been using an iphone (5V 1A) adapter to charge without issue since I got the device in February 2020.
2. When the iphone adapter is hooked up, I'm only getting 3.6V in and out via measurements on the board (dc in pin, dc out pin and grounding on p2 header).
3. When hooked up to usb port on my laptop, I'm getting 4.9V.
4. It's on the laptop now and the charge LED is flashing, but battery level in batocera continues to deplete.

If you can, disconnect the battery connector and try to use it while connected to usb. You don't want the battery drained.

Update 3:

Disconnecting the battery and trying to run the unit off the DC adapter fails. I am measuring just under 5V on the DC IN pin, but am only getting about 3-3.5V on the DC out pin. I've tried numerous 5V usb adapters and they are all good. The unit has never been powered by anything higher than 5V. So I assume the board has an issue?

Since the default charging current is 1.5Amp at 4.2Volt termination voltage, your 5V/1A PSU should not be enough or caused malfunction.
If you don't connect a battery to the charger circuitry, the output voltage is very unpredictable.

If the battery was fully discharged, the battery management circuit on the OGA will run in trickle-charge-mode to revive the battery for 30~60 minutes with 3.2~3.3Volt output.
Once the battery is alive, it start charging with a generic Li-Ion CV-CC algorithm.

Try connecting a reliable 5V/2A source and waiting 4~5 hours. And make a cold boot sequence and check the battery level.
Note that many laptop or desktop PC USB ports output current is limited at 1Amp or less probably.

I do have a quality 5V/2A charger and I was getting 4.8-5V on the DC in pin. The DC out pin with no battery connected did fluctuate a bit. Here is some additional info, I did update to SPI V1.1 and I am currently running Batocera V5.25. Can you explain a cold boot sequence. See, with Batocera, if I plug in the adapter, the OGA powers up and loads Batocera. This is how I was monitoring the battery percentage. The longer I let it run and try to charge, batocera was showing a lower battery charge percentage. I would like to charge it with the OGA powered off. I can let it u-boot to the missing SD card screen. I did see the battery image animation for 10 sec and my voltage was 3.7V. I measured the battery voltage as well when it was not plugged in and had 3.7V. Fully charged, I would expect a little over 4V.

Because I don't use Batocera OS image, I can't tell you any accurate answer. But there must be a shutdown menu and you can turn the OGA again with the power button.
Yes, fully charged battery voltage must be near 4.2Volt.

Do you have a USB wireless or wired network adapter?
If yes, we will let you know how to read the charging current via SSH console.

No, I do not have it hooked up with either a wired or wireless adapter. When using Batocera, you can shutdown the device. It will power off if the device is on battery only. However, if the usb adapter is plugged and attempt to shutdown the device, it will shut down, but will power right back up.

I never got an answer to this question, should the board power up and run with no battery connected, if hooked up to a charger?

Normally, once the power supply is connected, the system turns on automatically.
If the CPU load is high or a USB device is connected, the OS booting process could stop when the battery is disconnected or battery level is very low.
So we can say the system is very unstable if we don't connect the battery.

Thanks for the info. My board will not power up with the battery disconnected and the adapter plugged in. I have nothing plugged into the USB port when attempting to power the device just off the mains.

I believe the board is bad, but it could also be a bad battery as well. I was able to buy a replacement board and battery and they are on the way. Thank you for your help.

So, I got the replacement board from Ameridroid and I also purchased a new battery. With this new board I am seeing the same problem. When it is hooked up to usb power, the charging LED blinks, but the OS shows a decreasing battery percentage while charging. So for instance, when I hooked up the board, the battery percentage was 80%. As I let it charge for about an hour, the battery percentage reported by the OS show it decreasing to 75%. I suppose that the cord could be bad. I'm still using an apple iphone 5V/1A usb charger on it. That's all I have at the moment and I know it supplies good power and it worked in the past.

I loaded up emuelec and ran the following while in a terminal window with the power supply hooked up. Charge LED is flashing on back:

/cat/sys/class/power_supply/battery/voltage_now
3825000
/cat/sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_now
-334000

1Amp PSU can't charge the OGA.
You must use a 5V/2A charger since the charging current is 1.5Amp.

When the charging circuit works and the battery level is low, the current_now value must be a positive at near 1500000 (uA).

OK, I have an Anker 5V/2A charger. I'll use that and check the current_now value. Thanks for the info.

Alright, I've been on for a hour or so and started off with 67% battery. Charge led is flashing and I am using a good known 5V/2A charger. After the hour, I'm down to 56% battery.

/sys/class/power_supply/battery/voltage_now = 3729000
/sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_now = -423000

uevent log:
POWER_SUPPLY_NAME=battery
POWER_SUPPLY_STATUS=Charging
POWER_SUPPLY_CURRENT_NOW=-429000
POWER_SUPPLY_VOLTAGE_NOW=3734000
POWER_SUPPLY_HEALTH=Good
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY=55
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_COUNTER=3
POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL=3000000

So one other question, should the charging circuit work and charge the battery regardless of current capacity? Or does the unit only charge the battery when the battery is low? Since this is the second board and battery doing the same thing, I'm only left to believe that I could have a bad usb/barrel cord.

It looks fine.
Charging current could be going lower once the battery voltage is near 3.8Volt.
This is a typical charging curve. Note that we are using 0.5C configuration.

Keep charging for 3~4 hours and let me know the result again.
