My GO3 life is now complete.
I wouldn't say that.. there is so much more to explore...

I'm playing around with box86 on the GO3. Means running i386 native Linux applications on the GO3.
For example: https://www.gog.com/game/steamworld_dig runs mighty fine on the GO3 which is amazing, and starts within a second or two.
https://www.gog.com/game/freedom_planet also works fine, but takes a bit to actually start.

There are also a lot of native Linux applications for armhf/arm64 that work nicely on the GO3, but it's a bit of work involved on getting these running.

Also Streaming from a PC directly to the GO3 is also a thing:
viewtopic.php?p=319363#p319363
(not only just video, but you can also play that way on your GO3)

So overall, there is always more to do with the GO3 ;)

box86 can only run x86 (32bit) binaries it doesn't run x86_64 (64bit) binaries.

I just remembered that Steamlink is just a client for Steam which in the end just streams content from another PC that runs Steam to the client.
Even IF it would run, it wouldn't have any hardware acceleration for video playback and with that would be extremely slow and poor quality.
In the end it does the same as NVIDIA game streaming (also called GeForce Experience - GFE), and for that we actually have a hardware accelerated client called moonlight.
And with sunshine as a server it works even without having an NVIDIA card.
So to be honest, steam link is quite a terrible alternative, and moonlight should be preferred.

Yeah I’m rocking that setup now, but as a Mac user it would be great to have something I can use with a Mac headend. There is some evidence of Mac versions of sunshine around, but no one seems to be ready to launch.

Thanks for this awesome firmware

I'm having just two issues: atari lynx emulator doesn't work, I have placed the bios file in the home/odroid/ROMS folder
yet when I try to launch a game nothing happens.
I was confused with your ms dos instructions. There's no dosbox template in the the dos rom folder and I can't launch any of my games.
I would appreciate it if you could help me.

Hello,

I checked really quick on the Lynx issue and it seems the emulator itself is missing -.-
If you have internet connection you should be able to install it via:

Code: Select all

apt install libretro-mednafen-lynx
The DOS I'm not sure what could be the issue, that one should work.
Did you update the image? Could be that this was fixed during an update, cause I remember in the past that there actually was an issue with DOSBox which was later fixed.

If you still have issues with DOSBox after the update, let me know and we look deeper what could be the issue.

Thank you!
I didn't update your image maybe that's why I am having problems with the dos and lynx
emulator. How do I go about updating this image? I know there's a way which involves connecting to the internet,
using putty on a pc and my ip address. Not sure how exactly it is done.

Do you have the big ODROID Go Super, or the smaller ODROID Go Advance?
The smaller one should have build-in WiFi adapter and you should be able to use an option in the Attract Mode Setup to setup WiFi, that's the easiest way to connect it to the network.

Steps:
1. Go to the icon that says attract mode Attract Mode
2. Select WLAN-Setup
3. configure your WLAN (you can use mouse and keyboard, or use the onscreen keyboard)
4. once WLAN is activated press CTRL + ALT + F1 to switch to terminal
5. login as user "root" with password "odroid"
6. use your up arrow on your keyboard to go to cycle to the last commands that where entered, you should fine a line:
apt update && apt upgrade && apt dist-upgrade && apt autoremove && apt clean && apt update
7. press enter when the line is on the display and follow the information on the screen, it will update the image.
(afterwards you can also install libretro-mednafen-lynx with the command I send you last time)
8. once everything is done you can type "reboot" or press the power button to power off and restart the ODROID and everything will be up to date.

If you have an ODROID Go Super that doesn't have a build in WiFi Adapter, you can use the USB Port to connect a USB Hub, and connect it to keyboard and Wifi or Keyboard and USB-to-LAN adapter and use a cable.
Then the steps are the same as above.

can you type off the error messages, or make a picture of it so I can see what it's complaining about?

Thank you!
I've deleted your image and re flashed it onto my sd card again. I was able to successfully update
atari lynx and do the other update. When I connected my oga to my pc to view the files, I notice there is a
dosbox template present in the dos folder now. Atari lynx emulator is working now.
Thanks once again for all your hard work with this image and for helping me, I appreciate it.
You've done an amazing job with this image, I'm impressed, this is easily the best image for the oga and I
have tried every image.

I recently did an update after several months, maybe a year. I noticed that PSP games run a bit more smoothly, but all other GBA,PSX,SCUMMVM are slower and have sound issues as if the HW is not capable to run them. I reinstalled clean from last image and did the update and it is the same. Any idea what went wrong ?

There was a change on the Kernel, it switched from default performance mode to on-demand, where it clocks up automatically if needed.
This saves a bit of battery power if the CPU does not need to run in full speed.
It may result in slower performance although I haven't seen any direct comparison for that, but you can activate performance mode overall as well again.
Also the newer Kernel allows for overclocking, but might be unstable if done so.

I tried FF VIII on PSX and got pretty good performance.
The games I tested with GBA also all had 52~60 FPS

Can you name some example where you see slower performance?

I havent played with overclocking. I used default settings. E.g. F-Zero (both games) on GBA, Blade Runner, Hopkins FBI on Scummvm. But with the clean install - flash from img. file and no apt-get update, everything was fine. BTW: In the meantime, I found out that Recalbox is even faster in PPSSPP and has newer version of Retroarch, I think.

yes that image wasn't updated in a while.
Not sure about PPSSPP if newer version are really faster, as in the past they removed functions that were able to make it faster which had to be patched back in.
But also, overclocking helps with PPSSPP so could be that they overclock for PPSSPP.
Also there are several "hacks" you can activate for PPSSPP to make it run certain games faster, or at least it seems to run faster.
A common hack for example is to run GOW in 20 FPS instead of 60 FPS which "feels" faster.
