i can consider "emmc module" plug and play?

Post by alex_biancograt »

Hello everyone !

it's possible remove or add the "emmc module" after the booting os (ubuntu or armbian) from sd card ??

I would like to flash a rom on the "emmc module" without buying usb-emmc reader !! :D

but i need an opinion, i would not damage my new odroid n2+

Thanks for your attention ...

greetings to all !!

Above all, never plug or remove your eMMC when the computer is connected to DC supply!

You can flash your EMMC more safely. I did not buy the EMMC reader either. :)

You can use a few commands in petitboot to turn whole N2+ board into your eMMC reader - and connect it via USB to another computer.

Or you can use netinstaller to install a system without need to write anything on eMMC in the first place - just launch the installer directly from petitboot.

emmc adapters are only a few bucks and work well with etcher.

Unplugging a module would be the equivalent to unplugging your computer's hard drive while it's running, bad.

Well, yeah, perhaps the economical reason is not the best argument against getting eMMC reader. Even in the third world country like Poland you get one for less than 1 hour work at minimal wage.
In my case, I didn't buy one with N2+ (didn't know if I really need it or not), the weekend was coming and didn't bother waiting for another week to get that thing, that at the end of the day isn't necessary at all.

I think unplugging a working eMMC is more risky. In the worst case with HDD you risk data corruption. When unplugging eMMC you also risk damaging the memory chip itself. These chips are designed to be soldered to the device motherboard, not plugged in.
It's just a guesswork on my side, though. I never killed eMMC module and would strongly prefer not to. ;)
