I installed Ubuntu 24.04 minimal with kernel 6.6 from https://odroid.in/ubuntu_24.04lts/, then

The desktop installation went through mostly fine, until right at the end the installation failed with

Upon reboot, Ubuntu 24.04 loaded correctly and everything appears to be fine. However, when I go to Settings, Display, the system immediately hangs. In the UART console, the following message shows up:

At this point nothing works, other than a hard reboot.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Anybody? I'm unable to proceed with the setup due to this issue, the system predictably hangs as soon as I click on Settings. Everything else appears to be working fine.

Hmm, the board hanging isn't related to that. That's just the video decoder nothing related to display.
Are you using a microsd or eMMC ?
Power supply?

Thank you for your response.

I am using an external nvme m.2 ssd attached via usb. Power supply is Hardkernel 2A/12V.

As mentioned, the board does not hang as long as I don't enter Settings, specifically display related items in Settings. I have been able to use the board continuously for several hours, even left it running overnight no issues. The moment I click on Settings, and say Displays, it instantly freezes. And when it freezes, the last 4 lines in the console is always those lines related to meson firmware.

The same board works fine on the Mate 24.04 image, although I haven't had the chance to test it thoroughly.

Confirmed behavior with multiple boards. The board(s) hangs /freezes the instant I click on Settings.

The log reveals a misconfiguration for the VPU, meson SOCs require at least 896M CMA to be able to process 4K resolution.
I am using 1080p resolution. Does this still apply in this case?
What is the power consumption of the NVMe SSD specified?
Unfortunately, Crucial's website does not provide any information on the product's power consumption.

As long as you're using native 1080p resolutions at most, the value can be lowered by a certain amount, but if you want to decode 4K content, even if it's scaled to 1080p for display, the full value is needed.

All manufacturers usually keep a big secret about the true current consumption. The safest way to get reliable values is to read them from the product label or read them out with smartctl. Always trusting that the manufacturer will note them truthfully. But you only have access to it if you are in physical possession.
The reason for my question is because I know that none of my NVMe SSDs can be reliably operated with USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports within the specifications. This is also the reason why NVMe SSD USB enclosures are always equipped with USB Type-C ports.
That's why I use one of the very rare USB NVMe SSD enclosures with a separate power input to be able to operate them reliably on USB 2.0/3.0 ports.

I recently thought about buying an eMMC module for the N2+, but then decided on an NVMe USB adapter. The transfer speeds are comparable to those of an eMMC, USB 3.0 is the limiting factor here, but 2TB of storage cannot be justifiably achieved by an eMMC.
With a secured power supply, I prefer this solution because it does not use a proprietary interface and the solution is compatible with any device with a USB interface.

Tested (multiple N2+ 4GB boards):

1. ubuntu 24.04 minimal, kernel 6.6, boot from NVMe SSD attached via USB
- sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
- sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop-minimal

System hangs the moment I click on Settings. Confirmed with multiple boards, first board output the errors regarding meson, second board no output just freezes with UART console output frozen at whatever was displayed last before the hang.

2. ubuntu 24.04 minimal, kernel 6.6 boot from eMMC
- sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
- sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop-minimal

System works fine, no issues. Tried clicking around in Settings, and elsewhere, everything works fine.

3. ubuntu 24.04 Mate, kernel 6.6 boot from NVMe SSD attached via USB

System works fine, no issues. Tried clicking around in Settings, and elsewhere, everything works fine.

4. ubuntu 22.04 Mate, kernel 4.9, boot from NVMe SSD attached via USB

System works fine, no issues. Tried clicking around in Settings, and elsewhere, everything works fine.


On a related note, we have a N2+ with an Hynix 256GB NVMe SSD attached via an USB enclosure running without issues for 3 years now. The build running on that system is Ubuntu 20.04 Mate. The NVMe enclosure on that system is the same one I am using in the tests above.

Based on the above, it appears that the hanging issue only occurs with Ubuntu 24.04 Gnome running on an external SSD attached via USB.

Give me a couple days, I ordered a nvme usb case to test... I will let you know.. meanwhile I'm looking at why it freezes on gnome settings.

Not sure what magic you brewed, but the problem's gone.

To recap, I rewrote the ubuntu-24.04 minimal image I had previously downloaded on to the SSD, then booted into it, followed by

Then rebooted, and logged in and tested. No issues. Clicking on Settings works great, as does Appearance, Display, etc. No hanging. In addition, the flash-kernel issue regarding the meson dtb did not appear during the ubuntu-desktop-minimal install this time either.

At this point, I just hit CTRL+D, and the boot process resumes. Only thing is, it requires the UART console to be connected, since the HDMI output does not display the initramfs prompt. I am going to try increasing the rootdelay to see if that helps.

Separately, clicking on Remote Desktop under Settings --> System --> Remote Desktop causes gnome-control-center to crash. But I think that has more to do with Ubuntu 24.04, so I will troubleshoot that separately.

As for your issue where it drops to initramfs, it may be due to USB instability.
Either your USB->NVME case haven't got fully ready at the time the kernel expects it
Or
The USB cable has some interference.

In some cases you can edit /media/boot/boot.ini and edit this line:
setenv bootargs "root=UUID=e139ce78-9841-40fe-8823-96a304a09859 rootwait rw

Replace rootwait to rootdelay=5

You can try tweaking the rootdelay parameter until you get 100% boots.

Thanks for that. I didn't realize rootdelay=n is a replacement for rootwait. I did add rootdelay=30 to the existing boot args which included rootwait, but that seemed to be getting ignored, because I didn't see any 30 second delay anywhere in the boot process.

I will try replacing rootwait with rootdelay and see if that helps.

Based on the short logs you provided, I can only ASSUME that your nvme->usb case is resetting during startup causing the initramfs to understand something like this:
Waiting until /dev/sda comes up....
It does come up, lets try mounting
It goes away
It comes back.

That did it. I added "usb-storage.quirks=0x152d:0x0583:u" to bootargs and now this is in dmesg:
