USB to ethernet adapter not working on N2L

Post by paulcrawford »

Last December I purchased an N2L for use on a project that requires ethernet and a headless SBC. As there is no ethernet onboard, I also purchased a USB 3.0 to gigabit ethernet LAN network adapter by Aceele. I just plugged it to the N2L USB 3.0 port and it worked right away. It continued to work fine until last week when I noticed that I could not connect using ssh. The N2L was still running fine (blue LED flashing) so I unplugged the adapter and then plugged it in again. That restart of the adapter got the ethernet connection working again. Looking at the log there was an error listed something like TX error -71. It seemed to work fine again after that but a couple of days later I got the same error and loss of the connection again. Thinking that this might continue I purchased another adapter by Atolla to test.

When I plugged it in I could not get connected on ssh. When I looked on the Atolla website I found that they had a Linux driver download to install an r8153 module. I did the download and install on the N2L using the original Aceele adapter but the Atolla still did not work. So then I went back to the Aceele adapter and of course it did not work either. I then plugged a monitor into the HDMI port and connected a keyboard to the USB port. I was able to login so I blacklisted the driver and updated the initramfs but still neither adapter would work.

I contacted Atolla who said that the adapter should have worked out of the box without installing the driver and they would be happy to receive it back for a refund. But of course the real problem is that I cannot get any adapter work. I did notice that the lights on the RJ45 port on the adapter are working fine so the problem seems to be that the ethernet signal is not getting to the N2L on the USB port.

Since I can login, and can run any commands to help sort out the problem, I am able to make any changes required but I do not know where to begin to troubleshoot any further. Any guidance will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Have you tried to connect to to lower port (USB 2.0) and test it?
Please share the output of uname -a as well as the log with dmesg when your adaptor does not work.

@tobetter there is some good news: when I plug in the original Aceele adapter to the lower USB port (USB 2.0) I can get a connection on ssh.

Using that connection here is uname -a:

Code: Select all

$ uname -a

This is dmesg after a reboot with the Aceele adapter plugged into USB 2.0:

If I move the ethernet cable from the Aceele adapter to the Atolla adapter, the ssh connection is lost although the lights on the RJ45 port on the Atolla adapter are working as they should.

This is dmesg after plugging the ethernet cable back into the Aceele adapter and reconnecting via ssh:

So it seems that I can connect via ssh with the Aceele adapter in USB 2.0 but of course I will not get a gigabit connection, only a 100 megabit. Better than nothing but I really do want to get the gigabit connection working. Please advise if you need more testing or command output. Thanks.

Re: USB to ethernet adapter not working on N2L

Post by tobetter »

@paulcrawford, thank you for the detail logs.
[ 1455.877688] r8152 1-2.1:1.0 eth0: Rx status -71 error message makes me worry about the connection capability or USB compatibility issue with your ethernet dongle. The error number -71 happens when cable connection is not good so USB communication is unstable, AFAIK. Would you be able to put a USB 3.0 hub between your ODROID-N2L and the ethernet dongle, so you can observe if the issue still present?

Re: USB to ethernet adapter not working on N2L

Post by paulcrawford »

@tobetter, I do not have a USB 3.0 hub available other than the Aceele ethernet adapter that includes a three port USB 3.0 hub in addition to the RJ45 port. So I tried plugging the Atolla adapter into a Aceele adapter/hub USB 3.0 port, having removed a USBtinyISP device from that port, and moved the ethernet cable from the Aceele adapter to the Atolla RJ45 port. Then I tried to connect via ssh and failed. Moving the ethernet cable back to the Aceele adapter allowed the ssh connection. Then the USBtinyISP was reconnected to the Aceele USB 3.0 hub port.

Here is the dmesg result on the above:

SInce it gives the same error number -71, I guess it's a USB compatible issue which has been long for ODROID-N2, the issue had been improved a couple of years ago but still looks like some USB devices are not stable.

Re: USB to ethernet adapter not working on N2L

Post by mad_ady »

If I move the ethernet cable from the Aceele adapter to the Atolla adapter, the ssh connection is lost although the lights on the RJ45 port on the Atolla adapter are working as they should.
This is normal. Each interface gets its own ip address via dhcp. Always check what the current IP is in your dhcp server logs.

@mad_ady, You are absolutely correct, the Atolla did get a different IP address when plugged into the Aceele which was in turn connected to the USB 2.0 port on the N2L. My mind was on the way things would have worked on my N2+ where the MAC address is internal to the SBC. With the dongles the MAC address is on them. I changed the reserved IP address for the Atolla to the one I used to use on the Aceele and now everything works fine again on both dongles.

@tobetter, It is clear from the above that the real problem is the USB 3.0 port on the N2L because when I connect the Atolla dongle to the USB 3.0 port there is no ssh connection. So the original problem I had with the TX status -71 was likely nothing to do with the Aceele dongle but rather the USB 3.0 port on the N2L. This is very disappointing that there are still USB issues with the N2 series. One of the main reasons I switched to the N2L from the N2+ was that none of the four USB ports worked anymore and although the OTG port still worked and could function on some USB tasks, doing an AVRDUDE programming of a MegaAT328p was not one of them. I really thought moving to the N2L would end my USB problems and for about two and half months it did. All of the devices that I have connected to the USB hub part of the Atolla or Aceele dongles are only USB 2.0 anyway so I am not loosing anything there but not having USB 3.0 will prevent the dongle from providing gigabit ethernet. Although since most access to the N2L web server is via WiFi anyway, perhaps even the gigabit ethernet is not that important. If the USB 2.0 port on the N2L also failed, the N2L would become a very expensive paper weight to me.

Is there anything I can do to help sort out this USB issue since I have failed N2L? Also have there been other reports of problems with N2L USB ports? I don't recall seeing any in the forum which I check daily.

Re: USB to ethernet adapter not working on N2L

I am running two RS485 to USB converters. Until today I have had no problems with either one. Now the one will not stay connected via the Atolla USB 3.0 hub/ethernet adapter to the USB 2.0 port on the N2L while the other one works fine connected to the same USB 3.0 hub.

This is the dmesg output:

When I had the problems with Aceele ethernet adapter I assumed that the problem was with that adapter so I bought another adapter. With this issue I would appreciate Hardkernel confirming that the problem is likely with RS485 to USB converter and not the N2L. The converter is made by Waveshare and costs about twice as much as the ethernet adapters so before I replace this one with another I want to be sure that the problem is with it and not the N2L. If necessary I could move the one that does not work into the position of the one that does work but that would mean changing the wiring and the udev rules.

Re: USB to ethernet adapter not working on N2L

I have now switched the two Waveshare RS485 to USB devices, first without changing the USB cables from the hub to the device. Still there was an issue with device on the original RS485 network that had the problem before. So the problem does not seem to be with the Waveshare devices. Then I switched the USB cables from the hub to the Waveshare devices so that each had its original cable but also still coming from the same port on the USB hub, Still the device on the RS485 network keeps getting dropped even on a different hub port.

Here is the dmesg now:

Unless the source of the problem is in the USB hub, this would suggest that the N2L USB 2.0 port is the problem. To test that I removed the USB hub/adapter and plugged the Waveshare directly into the N2L USB 2.0 port. The following dmesg shows all of this, but the Waveshare device is not disconnected in software only in hardware. The Waveshare was connected directly for only 90 seconds. Perhaps that was not long enough to be disconnected in software

This has been stable for a while so I will run Linux C code that uses the Waveshare. So good news, both Waveshare devices seem to be working fine again but perhaps that is only coincidence as there are only infrequent commands sent on that RS485 network. Just checked again and the code tried to access the RS485 network when the device had been disconnected so there was an error. But if the code gets an error it tries again up to 10 times. Looking at the dmesg again below it seems that the time period of the Waveshare device been connected is variable: sometimes essentially 0 seconds to as much as about 20 seconds. This would explain why an error infrequently shows up in the code even though the USB connection is often not working at all.

With the known history of USB problems on the N2 series, I am inclined to think that my present issues may be a manifestation of those problems but I do not know enough about the problems to say for sure. Unfortunately I do not have another N2L available to test right now but I was planning on getting another one anyway as a backup.

Can someone please review the dmesg output to determine where the fault seems to lie?

Just unplugged the Waveshare device from the hub and replugged it. The c code now works perfectly again.

Not sure it applies to the N2L, and neither a solution, but if replugging a device "fixes" the issue you may have a software workaround. There may be some gpio you can toggle to force reset the usb hub, or maybe using uhubctl https://github.com/mvp/uhubctl to toggle power per port.

You could detect the issue by running a script that parses dmesg output and reset the faulty port.

Re: USB to ethernet adapter not working on N2L

@mad_ady, This is a very interesting approach. I checked the N2L USB root hub with lsusb -v and found that it does support per port power switching. I just had another code stoppage which was cured with plugging and replugging the USB to RS485 converter USB cable which is connected to the Atolla USB hub. That hub, however, does not support per port power switching so I would need to switch the power to all USB connections downstream of the N2L USB 2.0 port. Disconnecting all of the USB ports may still work as each one is used independently by the code and specifically setup by the code when required. There is a watchdog timer on the N2L which has a repair script. I could add the dmesg command with a grep to determine if the specific port has stopped functioning. I am just waiting now for the USB converter to stop functioning so that I can manually switch power at the N2L to get the code running again without doing a killall and start the code again. As I type the code did stop again, so I did the manual switch at the N2L USB 2.0 port and just like magic the code started to run again. So I think this could actually work.

My philosophy on software development is, however, that if things get too complicated, the original approach to the code was probably not the best. In this case, I am thinking that, given the history of USB issues on the N2 series, I may be better to switch to ethernet for communicating with the various data collecting devices via Modbus on RS485. The only weak link then would be that, since the N2L does not have native ethernet, I would still have to depend on the USB to ethernet adapter having a solid USB connection. I already know that, on the N2L I have, I cannot depend on the USB 3.0 port. How long the USB 2.0 port will last is anybody's guess.

I have ordered another N2L as a backup and since I now have two USB to ethernet adapters as well, perhaps I will connect one to each port to monitor the reliability. I also found and ordered an ethernet to RS485 converter. So the new challenge will be to rewrite the parts of the code that communicate with Modbus via USB serial ports to using ethernet instead. Preliminary research indicates that c is well adapted to doing just that.

Thanks again for your suggestion. You can always be depended upon to come up with novel approaches to problem solving.

@mad_ady, I just had a stoppage of the code because it could not connect to the device after trying 10 times. I disconnected and reconnected the USB hub at the N2L USB 2.0 port but there did not clear the fault. Then I disconnected and reconnected the device USB cable from the USB hub and the code continued. This hub as mentioned before does not support per port power switching so it would not cure the problem. Perhaps a different USB hub/ethernet adapter would work.

Getting too complicated again!

I've overlooked this thread. Sorry.

Can you please double check the part number of your Ethernet adapter controller chipset?
Is it RTL8153 or RTL8152?
As far as I know, RTL8153 is a USB 3.0 device while RTL8152 is a USB 2.0 device.
But your dmesg output showed RTL8152. I think they probably share a single device driver though.
Once you confirm the part number, we will buy a similar adapter which has the same chipset to reproduce the issue.

For my backup N2L:

Code: Select all

$ lsusb

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
The manufacturers of the two USB to Ethernet dongles are different but the chip inside is the same.

We found a couple of different RTL8153 dongles in Korea and ordered.
We will test it in the next week.

We've tested various USB devices with ODROID-N2L USB host ports.

USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 devices have no critical issue so far.

But, we found a few USB 3.0 (Super-Speed) devices which didn't work properly as you observed.

Note that when we connected the non-working USB 3.0 Ethernet devices to the USB 2.0 host on N2L, they worked, but of course the iperf measured speed drops to around ~300Mbps from normal ~900Mbps due to USB 2.0 bandwidth.

We think the USB 3.0 signal strength or integrity has a serious problem in the ODROID-N2L hardware design since all of those devices worked fine with other ODROID boards.
Therefore, ODROID-N2L USB 3.0 host port is very picky and has much worse compatibility / stability.
Sorry for the very bad news.

We've been looking into the issue more carefully.
I'm not sure if we can find a fix, but we're still looking for a real root cause, give us a couple of weeks.
