Re: USB issues N2

We confirmed an instability issue only when we connected multiple USB storage devices to N2 with heavy transfer.
If we lowered the transfer speed around 20~30%, the problem was gone.
Our engineers and Amlogic engineers have been investigating a root cause.
We are looking into the DMA driver dead lock condition and block-queue buffer handler driver bugs in the Kernel these days.

We know there are a few users who have other USB issues even we've shipped only ~10,000 N2 boards.
But we couldn't reproduce on our side yet. We may need to buy more different USB devices for various test purpose.

Any new hardware release is bound to have some issues. It will take a while, but the N2 should become as stable as the other platforms.

First I have to say I'm fan of odroid, I have been working with Odroid XU4 with wonderful results and now I want to move to Odroid N2. The company bought 18 boards and we are facing the issues with the USB3.0 ports, this is very dissapointing.
I have connected a Logitech C615 USB web cam and a Huawei E3372 USB modem, and they both present malfunction. The web cam drops many many frames, and it is recording only at 10fps. Also, the connection of USB modem is very unstable. If I connect only the web cam, or only the modem, they work ok.
Is there anything we can do with this issue? different of using the OTG port. I need both devices connected, and perhaps a third one

Thanks.

Try forcing the smp_affinity_list of your webcam to a single big core, and setting the governor to performance.

Hello elatllat, thanks for your answer.
I think the link you posted is broken
I really don't know what you are talking about, I will have to investigate and it will take me a few weeks I suppose.
Anyway, thanks for pointing this alternative.

Hello there, may I ask you if this instability issue when we connected multiple USB storage devices to N2 with heavy transfer is now fixed?
I am deeply worried about it because I just bought this sbc mainly to make a NAS using usb 3.0 external devices.
Thank you

Hello there, I'm back with this issue and another N2 board.
I have an N2 board, with a USB 2.0 webcam and a USB mobile modem. I have a Video Recording application, recording frames at 10FPS, and for some reason the camera just stops working. Checking the /var/log/syslog I can see that before the camera stops working, there is some kind of error related to the usb modem, there is some kind of power off in the usb port and the camera goes away. The modem is able to recover and work again, but the camera does not. I know the modem is back because the system is remote and I can access using ssh. The only way to get the camera back is performing a reboot. This happens like 3 to 6 times every day.

This is the info of the system:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Release: 18.04
Codename: bionic

Linux odroid 4.9.230-76 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Aug 15 00:10:26 -03 2020 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

I would like to share the syslog but is too long for pasting here, I putting just the parts I think are relevant:

/////////////Before the camera failure, this seems to be the modem failure//////////

@rmorales8303, why don't you try to attach the cam to the OTG port at front if the USB CAM is based on USB 2.0?

Actually, I'm thinking to change the usb modem to the OTG port, instead of the camera. Please let me provide a few context on how I arrived to this:

If you check the history of this forum, you can find an old post I made:

Thanks.
from that time, I tested connecting the Huawei modem to OTG port, the result was a bad function. The modem seems to freeze and only a poweroff cycle was able to make it work again.I could not find a way to poweroff the OTG port from commands, so I discarded this solution.

I changed the camera to OTG port, and modem to normal usb. The behavior was just a little better, the camera worked for a while, but the modem was still freezing. I was not able to perform the poweroff cycle in the normal usb neither, so I designed an external circuit to actually cut the power of the Huawei. Regarding the camera, it worked for like three to four months, after that time we began to have dead cameras again. And again, only a reboot to the system can bring them back. I thought it was an issue with current in the OTG port. So, I discarded using the camera in OTG port.

I decided to change the Huawei modem. I got a usb modem with external power, it is powered by the same power supply we use for the Odroid. This power supply is 12V/2A. Now, I connected both the camera and new modem to the normal USB. It was working, apparently. We had a few systems with this arrangement since March 4 2021,and the issue just arises until now.

My big issue is that we have several already deployed devices at customer facilities, and they are designed with a very tight casing, so it is not that easy to go there and just change the modem to the OTG port, so I'm trying to find a software solution and perhaps execute some steps through the ssh connection and fix it. If this is not possible, I have to find a hardware solution, until now, the only alternative I see is changing the modem to the OTG port, this is the last combination I think I can test. Anyway, this will have a huge cost, we will have to go to each customer and make the changes. If this does not work, I suppose I will have to find an alternative to the Odroid board.

Thanks a lot for any guidance you can provide.

This is an update:
Using the OTG port for the USB modem does not work neither. When I just turn on the system, the modem gets detected and connects to network, but after a few minutes, the same error occurs:

[pastebin]Aug 10 07:15:01 odroid CRON[7954]: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output)
Aug 10 07:15:01 odroid CRON[7957]: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output)

Aug 10 07:15:01 odroid kernel: [11403.528976@4] qmi_wwan 1-1.1:1.4: nonzero urb status received: -71[/pastebin]

But this time the modem can't recover and I lost communication with the device definitively. So, using the OTG is not an option, neither for the camera nor for the modem.

And now I have an Odroid N2+ with the same behavior. :(. So far, I have two Odroid N2 and one Odroid N2+ with this behavior.

It may be worth testing with a newer kernel. Try tobetter's ubuntu/debian netinstall, that should come with kernel 5.13.

Thanks for your suggestion. I really don't know how to upgrade the kernel of a deployed system. I will have to bring the failing boards to the lab and I was thinking to use the last image with Ubuntu 20.04 in this link https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-n2/os_im ... u/20210223, but it has the Kernel 4.9.241 LTS not the 5.13 you suggested. Can you tell where can I get an image with the kernel 5.13

Hello there,
We are still suffering this issue and we have detected some other boards with this malfunction behavior. In total we have six (6) boards with this issue. We have identified they are marked as Rev 0.5 20200406. We have followed the suggested repair, using this transitor, we did this with two boards, they still not work. ¿Is there anything else we can do? ¿Is there any way to send those board to hardkernel so the can be repaired?
Thanks.

Can you make a list of Production LOT numbers for those six boards?

Hello odroid. For some reason I was not able to login with rmorales8303 username anymore, and I was not able to reset the password neither, so I had to create another account.
Anyway, regarding what you asked for, only two of the boards still have that mark, and It says EL2006. The other boards don't have the label because we have to use double sided tape in order to keep the memory in place. Checking some other marks in the boards, there is one mark that says REV 0.5 20200406, this is next to ethernet port, in the back of HDMI connector.

Thanks.

User name rmorales8303's last activity was Nov 17, 2022.
A new password has been sent to your previously registered email.

All of your boards seems to be ODROID-N2+ not ODROID-N2.
Send us the boards and we will try repairing them. But we can't guarantee that as explained in this link.

¿Can you please provide the complete address for sending the boards?
In the case you are able to repair, ¿does this job has any cost?

You can find our address on the very last line of "hardkernel.com" homepage.
If the paper with this thread printed on it is enclosed in the shipping box, the engineer can identify the problem more quickly.
We will let you know if repairs are possible and how much they will cost after inspection.

We have been evaluating the option of send the boards for repair, but shipping cost is just too high, almost USD250 from Colombia to South Korea, and the same amount from South Korea to Colombia. The shipping costs are almost as much as buying new boards. We are looking for a less expensive option, taking into account that time is not a constraint, we can wait for the boards a couple of months. I will let you if we find an option
