[NOTICE] ODROID-N2 DDR memory changes to 2GB model only

Post by tobetter »

This is the notice of changing the DDR memory components from 4x 512MB to 2x 1GB, this change affects to ODROID-N2 2GB model only.
An OS you already have in a memory card (SD/eMMC) may not boot with the board due to the different memory setup, therefore the boot loader must be updated with a new version. The update boot loader source code and the prebuilt image are uploaded to Hardkernel Github. The Petitboot (v20191213+) is already applied to support this memory configuration.

So... The 2GB model is user upgradeable if the user can easily solder BGA components? :)
Is the change made to facilitate component management?
Also, will the new board get a different revision number?

Sourcing the parts for reasonable prices is another problem, unless you have another dead N2 to 'borrow' the parts . But is it worth the risk?
You'll probably end up with two bricked N2's or the selfmade 4GB model is unstable...

I don't think he was suggesting that it was something the average user could do. Or that is was in anyway a practical thing to do.
However I have seen some users here that have the equipment and definitely have above average soldering skill that could probably pull it off.

There is a N2 2Gb coming my way with CoreELEC. I downloaded the latest stable CoreElec image 9.2.1 for N2, but could not choose between any subversions.
Will it work regardless of the memory config I'll get? ( It's from pollin.de, so I expect 4x 512MB )

Your board will be ok to boot with the image, otherwise please do start your own thread to follow up.

Does this new image also work with the old memory configuration? Or we need the new image for the new revision, and old image for old revision?

We have Ubuntu minimal images that we flash on to the eMMCs, this image has the old boot loader and does not boot with the new Odroids. What's the easiest way to update the boot loader on our custom Ubuntu minimal image while preserving the file system? I tried to do dist-upgrade but that doesn't seem to update the boot loader.

Do you have the U-boot log through the UART-to-serial debugging board?
Do you want to replace the U-boot on each memory card you have or replace U-boot to the minimal image file?

Hi, I just want to replace the u-boot on 1 of the emmc's, so I can create a minimal image from that emmc, and reload the new minimal image to all the emmc. Is that the easiest way vs. replacing u-boot on all the emmcs?

Ideally you need to dd read and extract the first 1-2MB space from the start of a working image and stop just before the first partition starts and dd write that data to your target image (use the no truncate option). Sorry, I don't have the commands nearby...

U-boot image can be downloaded from the link, you can flash with Linux PC or ODROID board itself.
https://github.com/hardkernel/u-boot/re ... roidn2-118

Code: Select all

$ tar xzvf u-boot-odroidn2-118.tar.gz
$ cd sd_fuse
$ sudo ./sd_fusing <device/of/your/card>

Make sure to read the script first and adjust paths so you don't accidentally nuke your hdd with dd!

I noticed this new batch of odroids N2 have much higher quality compared to the last couple batches we got. 1 thing is the device now consistently boots when you plug it in. We haven't observed an instance where the power is plugged in and the device did not boot. The other thing is the USB OTG connection is a lot more reliable & consistent, at least from the N2s we have tested so far. Is this due to hardware or manufacturing process changes you guys made, or would updating the boot loader on the old Odroid N2s would have a similar performance improvement?

There was no obvious change in the hardware.
I think new boot loader blobs or other software updates might make you feel something better.

The Odroid-N2 won't be as cheap as the $35 Raspberry Pi, but it's also intended for a different market that's willing to pay for some extra memory, more ports, and a faster processor MCDVOICE
