On Board NIC connection issue

Post by palace86odroid »

Good day,
I'm having a problem with the on board NIC. While I can ping devices throughout my networks (192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x) and I can ping out to the internet (8.8.8.8) both ping types result in some packet loss, 30% to 60%. When it comes to connecting to any kind of site, I can not connect. This happens with Petitboot (when trying to update it), it happens whenever I try to connect HomeAssistant for updates on the internet or connect to a Shelly switch on the internal network. I have installed Ubuntu Linux 18.04 and 22.04 for the Odroid N2 + to the eMMC and once done, although networking is set up correctly, I can not successfully run "sudo apt-get update or sudo apt get upgrade" nor will the browser connect to google.com etc. I don't know if the ODroid has a failed onboard NIC or something else is the issue. Any help would be appreciated, thanks .... :(

Do you use dhcp or static ips? It sounds like a bad cable (check dmesg and ethtool eth0) or a duplicate ip in your lan...

Check the LED status on the RJ45 jack first.

Code: Select all

* Green LED: Flashing by data traffics at 100Mbps connection
* Amber LED: Flashing by data traffics at 1000Mbps connection

To Mad_ADY:
Sorry, Left stuff out. I have tried both Static and DHCP addressing. I have connected it to both of my internal networks (my original 192.168.0.x and the HomeAssistant special network 192.168.1.x (on completely different hardware) (but when another device, one of my laptops, is connect to the special network it works just fine and connecting it to my original network I've had no issues) I have switched out cabling with 3 different cables, two Cat 5Es and a Cat 7. IP addresses that have been static have been in a zone on the special network that 1) is just for HomeAssistant Controllers & 2) has been checked by a network sniffing tool, Advanced IP Scanner. When on the original network, when the ODroid is connected to it, there are zones that are for static addresses, I have used a clear one again checked with the network sniffing tool, Advanced IP Scanner. Also each time I have set up a static address I have pinged that address for a second assurance that the address is clear.

Do you observe some packet loss of 30% to 60% in your local are network continuously?
Is there any network related kernel messages in dmesg output?

To ODROID:
No, I have reasonably new business class hardware in my internal networks. So neither of my networks routinely experience packet loss either internally or externally from windows 10 or 11, or pinging out from my external router. My networks just work. (actually almost never, except when the ISP services are unavailable, I have a business class ISP as well so that almost never occurs)

If you believe your network infrastructure has no issue and your N2+ have a hardware NIC problem, contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a link of this thread.
They will help your RMA process if you purchased the board from our web-store directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor/reseller.

But, please note that we have seen only a couple of hardware NIC problems per year even we've shipped over 100,000 ODROID boards every year.
Therefore, I had a doubt in your network environment.

TO ODROID:
Although I'm conversant in Windows based systems, I'm not that conversant on Linux/Raspian/ODroid technology.
I can tell you that a Raspberry PI 4 is working in the place of the ODroid and having no issues with the Network/HomeAssistant implementation. I just know that the ODroid will not connect out on the same wired network as the Raspberry Pi is connecting out on now.
In the Windows/PC world I would be working to replace a driver for the NIC because the issue has similar symptoms to a driver issue. I don't know how the ODroid implements "drivers" or low level firmware control of the NIC hardware but I can tell you that my Android phone (similar processor to the ODroid) and my Apple tablet have had no issues with either the special network or the primary network or connecting to the Raspberry Pi incidence of HomeAssistant. As you haven't/didn't give me any software tests/commands that I could run from PEDITBOOT or the "shell" outside of PEDITBOOT there is nothing I could show you about the hardware/software/firmware to help define the problem further.
That is now Immaterial, as I sent the original ODroid back to the original AMAZON Vendor of the device for an exchange for another ODROID. Hopefully the original unit is a member of that small group of ODroids you mentioned that have had a networking problems.
Thank you for the time that you have spent on this adventure.
