HK GPS module, bad reception

Post by zyssai »

Hi,
I bought HK GPS module receiver for this project:

viewtopic.php?f=182&t=42184

I use LineageOS 18.1
I have bad signal, as navigation will working from time to time.
I have thermal windshield, so I think it does not help.
I don't know for the moment where to hide receiver for better signal.

I'm just asking if there is a way to help android to acquire satellite location with an app or hack.

Thanks for help!

Yes my smartphone navigation works perfectly.
As you can see it can work nicely:

But most of the time it will not work, i will have no signal.

Thanks for your help.

I think I need to find another place for it.
I tried just in the bottom of the windshield, and on the top of the roof (inside the car, between the roof and the blanket)
Hope you understand, I don't find the good words, I'm french.

TTFF (Time to First Fix) can take a while especially from a cold start, without A-GPS data and even more when in an urban canyon.
Once you get your first position, does it keep receiving data consistently?

If yes, then it's not an antenna problem, and you should see if your software stack provides the chip with assisted GPS data to speed up that first fix. You need an internet connection for that, to fetch the ephemeris.

Hi and thanks you.

When signal is acquired, it never drops, i have perfect navigation.
I only use Google Maps, I don't think it helps receiver with downloading A-GPS data.
Do you know if there is an app or a service to do that?

We're all used to smartphones getting super fast first fix but they're all fitted with A-GPS solution, and also use hybrid approaches like cell-tower and even wifi hotspots-based location systems. Here you have only a GNSS chip, all bare.

I had a look at the gps module sold by hardkernel, it's a Ublox G7020-KT chip. Datasheet there
Ublox A-GPS solution is called Assist-Now
I'm not sure if individuals can register, it's the kind of thing usually targeted at OEMs
Then the idea is to fetch the data from ublox servers and push it to the chip through a serial connection. No need to do it every time, once a week or every few days is enough. You night have to write a bit of code for that, can't say about the tooling available.

But here's your lead.

I'm not sure if there are other ways. I used to work in the GNSS industry but that was a long time ago and my knowledge on the matter is not up to date.

When I bought one of my firsts smartphones, i remember that I used some apps to download agps data, so that gps can have faster fix.

I looked at the play store and seen some similar apps.

I will test asap, but that would be better if I should find service app to do this automatically, because I'm not alone to use this project.

Thanks again, i really appreciate your help

Our GPS hal lib don't have A-GPS functionality.
