New Android image monitor problems

Post by JustSumDad »

Haveing a failure from the latest Android image:

I have a 7 inch Touch Screen HDMI Monitor, 1024x600 resolution, MPI7002

Works great on 20200318 but no display on 20200414
If I use a bench monitor its fine.
God I wish I could write apps!

Same problem here! After updating to the 20200414 there's no signal on my Odroid-VU7A Plus! Just a black screen. Is there anything I can do?

I had to pull my N2 out of my installation, remove the eMMC memory, re-install the older version on it and set it all back up, then put my whole project back together :(

I'm sorry. It was updated boot.ini because some code was modified for boot.ini.
If you just edit /odm/boot.ini manually, the screen works out.

Not an option for me!

I would really like to know what I do have to modify in the boot.ini and how to do it. I tried to access the file via ssh and also adb from my laptop. But it seems that I have no permission to change anything. It's really disappointing! :(

Do you set display_autodetect to on "true"?
I installed 0318 version and I set display_autodetect "true" and "false".
And after updateing there was no problems. The display worked well.

Anyway, if screen doesn't work, you try edit /odm/env.ini

hdmimode="1024x600p60hz"

if display is DVI type, edit too voutmode.
voutmode="dvi"

I haven't solved it yet. I did get a new waveshare 7" display which appears to be an updated model and that one worked just fine. I'm still going to work on getting the older one working though.

Still have not found a solution for this problem with 20200414. Even a new installation with the self-installation image doesn't work. When booting I see the HK-logo for a second then the display (Odroid VU7A plus) shows 'No signal' and after that there's only a black screen. That is confusing because it's not an exotic hardware combination, it's Odroid hardware. Don't you guys at Hardkernel test your software on your own hardware?

Do you try to edit /odm/env.ini like this.

hdmimode="1024x600p60hz"

voutmode="dvi"

display_autodetect="false"

We found problem for "display_autodetect" with VU series.
I'm sorry again.
We'll release fixed version tomarrow.

If you have to use VU7A + right now, please edit env.ini manually.

I have the waveshare 7 inch display, hopefully your release fixes the issue with it. Once I update to your new version I don't want to every update after that to prevent this from happening again. How do I toggle updates off? My system is going to be my car infotainment and an issue like this could destroy my project.

No, it makes that android don't check update every booting automatically.
If you want to update, you just open OdroidSettings -> Update.

Tested it and still no luck! Again only a black screen after updating.

What I have done: Fortunately I've made a backup of a working installation some time ago. After flashing the backup to my SD card I could update to the latest (for me) working version 20200318. So luckily I could recover the installation to the state before the latest update. And then I tried to update to 20200422. Without success! Seems that I'm stuck at version 20200318.

Question: is it possible that I have a faulty VU7A plus? I can remember that I never was able run it with it's native resolution at 1024x600p60Hz. With 720p60Hz it worked very well so this was not an issue for me – at least until now.

Really, now I updated to the latest firmware and now it’s stuck on the hardkernel logo. I really hope it didn’t screw my image up. Wtf. First time I update I lose the touchscreen and now I can’t even use my odroid, this is ridiculous.

Your next firmware should just be working version 20200318. Never update it after that just keep there cause all I’ve had are issues after that build. I want to go back and keep all my data without formatting the emmc

Let me know status about your N2.
Can you see the screen? Or it booted up but Screen wasn't working?
Can you have eMMC Module Reader?
What kind of display do you use? VU7A + or Warehouser?
Can you use adb command?

I am using my computer monitor and I see the hardkernel splash screen, then both lights on the odroid light up and stay on without blinking. I do have an eMMC reader.
I use the 7” waveshare display 1024x600 hardware and 1920x1080 software. I can use adb but I’m worried the odroid isn’t booting.

That's the same behavior I am seeing with the update. I made a backup copy of the image on my mmc and installed the latest self install version and that booted up just fine on the same mmc.

I guess that N2 failed booting and just stayed in u-boot.

Did you edit boot.ini or env.ini? or wasn't just n2 booting up after updating?

Insert eMMC to Desktop PC and show your boot.ini and env.ini

I will show it tommorow, but I clicked update then it installed and restarted and got stuck on the hard kernel logo, it was the updates fault, do you guys test your firmware updates literally everytime I update it gets worse.

Do you save your data? or installed App?
You can get data from your eMMC by reader.

What color of boot logo do you see? White or Black?

I guess that you don't have usb serial debug to use fastboot, it's too hard to restore android.
I'm sorry that why your android recovery failled.

I've tried to make your situation. So I installed 0318 and updated but android booted up.

I finally was able to do a fresh install on a spare SD card. On first boot after installing it was stuck at the boot logo. Then I inserted the card in my computer and edited boot.ini and env.ini on the VFAT partition of the card to the following:

hdmimode="1024x600p60hz"
voutmode="dvi"
display_autodetect="false"

With this edits on both files Android finally booted successfully.

Now I'm trying to do an update to my 20200318 installation (to be safe I did a full backup of the working installation). I will report what happened – if the download will finish somewhen in my lifetime. It's at 15% after an hour …

I have noticed the issues appeared when you guys introduced env.ini to separate logic and value proccessing from boot.ini. Is it posssible for me to delete the env.ini from the pie_20200422 release and replace the boot.ini with the one from pie_20200318?

I am still stuck on my custom boot logo as I deleted the hardkernel one and replaced it with mine. I really don’t want to restart from scratch but I guess I have to revert back to pie_20200318. screw firmware 20200422 it sucks and has ruined everything for me. I Honestly hate updates Especially when they destroy all my progress.

One more thing, I was wondering if it's possible to temporarily hide navigation bar, so you have to swipe up to see it. because for me it is always there doesn't go down itself.

I'm online updated from pie_20200413 to pie_20200422 and got a blank screen on TV too. Again.
I has edited boot.ini and env.ini again:

[boot.ini]
setenv hdmimode "1360x768p60hz"
setenv voutmode "hdmi"
setenv display_autodetect "false"

[env.ini]
hdmimode="1360x768p60hz"
voutmode="hdmi"
display_autodetect="false"

But in this time it's not helped.

Hardkernel's splash screen goes in 1080p60hz and than TV goes in "unsupported format".
Any solutions? Reinstall?

With the latest Android image my TV always goes in HDR mode on startup, no matter if the resolution is set to 1080p or 2160p. I also tried changing colorattribute to 8bit, still the same problem.

Is there a setting in boot.ini that can turn HDR off?
Is this currently missing in boot.ini and uses HDR by default?
Is this related to the latest amlogic update?

Only for reference, I had to edid the env.ini to make the VU7+ work:

voutmode="dvi"
display_autodetect="false"

Only for reference, I had to edid the env.ini to make the VU7+ work:
hdmimode="1024x600p60hz"
voutmode="dvi"
display_autodetect="false"
This worked for me when I did a fresh install. But not when updating from a previous version (20200318). No matter what I changed in boot.ini and env.ini, the boot process is stuck at the boot logo. I also noticed that the blue LED is constantly on and isn't flashing, what it normally does.

Starting my project completely new with a fresh install is no option for me. I don't want to lose all the work I did on it, all the data, apps, settings, …

Yes, I understand it totally. I made a new install to do these measurments of the other thread. But when I booted and came back after some minutes, I found it also with blue LED constantly on. I rebooted two times with no effect and then I edited the env.ini. I see that this is not the same situation.

So I flashed the failed update image to see if I could find out what's going on. It starts to boot, get to the Hardkernel screen and just hangs from there. I couldn't see it before because the other Waveshare screen I was using had issues displaying 1080p content.

If the blue LED doesn't blink like heart beat, the booting process stocks at u-boot stage. I think there could be an issue with boot.ini or env.ini file in the system update process.
We will try to reproduce the issue early next week.

I would also like to join the party as I have same issues with SD cards like mentioned above.

Additionally, I could not find any way to boot into Android via Pettitboot as I am always stuck on a black screen. This was working on previous versions.

I tried it and still have the same problem – the boot process hangs at the boot screen with the blue light constantly on.

@jackinho,
Did you flash selfinstall-odroidn2-55-64bit-20200507.img.xz into your SD card with Etcher?

No, I tried an update of my existing installation (version 20200318).
