I admit, it's a bit of a clickbait title, except it's true.
I've been searching and trying out apps to turn my N2 (running voodik's ATV) in a chromecast receiver. Most apps that boast this functionality use different/non standard protocols or require you to run companion apps on your phone to be able to cast. This is not chromecast, and chromecast-enabled apps don't support those renderers.
Luckily I stumbled upon CastReceiver (https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... tapp&hl=en) that does what it promises.
Here's what I've tried with an official chromecast (part of a Philips Android TV). Clients were an Android phone and a linux PC (intel).
Chromecast:
* Cast from Youtube -- ok
* Cast from site (for sites that support casting) -- ok
* Cast from Pluralsight app from Android -- ok
* Cast from Android MXPlayer -- ok
* Cast from Chrome (tab) -- ok (with sound, Youtube tab switches to Youtube app)
* Cast from Chrome (desktop) -- ok (with about 1s lag)
* Cast from Gnomecast -- ok (it uses ffmpeg to transcode to webm)
CastReceiver:
* Cast from Youtube -- ok
* Cast from site (that supports casting) -- ok
* Cast from Pluralsight app from Android -- ok
* Cast from Android MXPlayer -- ok
* Cast from Chrome (tab) -- ok (with sound, Youtube tab switches to Youtube app)
* Cast from Chrome (desktop) -- ok (with about 1s lag)
* Cast from Gnomecast -- ok (with transcoding)
In my tests the app and N2 behaved the same way as a hardware chromecast HD. I didn't test:
- DRM content (I doubt it works)
- game streaming (stadia & friends)
- music streaming (any suggestion for an android media player that can cast just music?
- 4k content
So, this app is a demo, but in my tests I didn't get any limitations. It has the potential to add value to your N2 (save you from spending $70 on a chromecast), so give it a try!
