You can refer to the link to know how Android image can be built for ODROID-N2.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-n2/softw ... ng_android

What exactly do you mean by as programmatically as possible?

yes, I know this way, it uses fastboot

however, there is also support in Android putting the device in recovery mode (adb reboot recovery)

and from there to use an image pre-built for sideload.

the question is how to accomplish that

thank you

Using fastboot is one part to update the image to ODROID-N2 if there is a running system or U-boot is installed. However, the primary installation method for ODROID-N2 is using a.k.a selfinstall image which does fresh install the Android to a memory card. The instruction to build the selfinstall image is introduced in the wiki I've shared. Once Android is installed to ODROID-xx, there is a partition for the recovery system and you can switch to it using reboot command or from U-boot. Simply you can try to run adb reboot recovery for testing.
