RTL8811AU WiFi adapter not working

Post by schmidtbrecht »

I am running the latest 20190530 Android build and trying to get a RTL8811AU WiFi adapter working.

VID is 0bda, PID is c811.

I found a possible solution in a C2 thread: viewtopic.php?t=24326

But I can't add something like "0bda c811 8812au /system/etc/modprobe.d/8812au" to /etc/wifi_list.txt because neither an etc folder nor the wifi_list.txt file seem to exist.

Is this solution still applicable under Android 9 Pie or is there another way?

Our WiFi Module 5A has the RTL8811AU( USB ID = 0bda:a811 ) chipset and it works with N2 out of the box.
https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/wifi-module-5a/

I think your adapter must have a different chipset.

According to the manufacturer it is a RTL8811AU chip.

So there is no way to add the USB ID to the driver in Android 9 Pie?

I think your chipset seems to be RTL8811CU not RTL8811AU. Many people hate Realtek's confusing naming policy including me.

As far as I know, the RTL8811CU device driver is totally different from the RTL8811AU.

I have an EDUP AC1619 RTL8811AU WiFi dongle that also does not work in Android. It works perfectly well in CoreElec and Windows 10.

Win10 info: Realtek RTL8811AU Wireless LAN 802.11ac USB 2.0 Network Adapter; USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0811&REV_0200
Works with Realtek driver "drv_wlan_realtek_rtl81xxcu-1027.4.0912.2016"
(from netrtwlanu.inf: %RTL8811au.DeviceDesc% = RTL8811au.ndi, USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0811)

I tried all USB 3.0 ports and front USB2.0. It is not recognized in any...

If it is fully compatible with our RTL8811AU (0BDA:A811), we will made a workaround in a few days.

I have added c811 pid in wifi_id_list.txt.
wifi_id_list.txt

Try this.

Code: Select all

adb remount
adb push wifi_id_list.txt /vendor/etc
adb sync
adb reboot

I did as suggested, and my Edup AC1619 RTL8811AU WiFi dongle still does not work.

@Sholander,
I think your WiFi dongle has a different chipset RTL8814AU.

I am pretty sure that my dongl, Edup AC1619 600 Mbps WiFi, (USB ID = 0bda:a811) has a Realtek RTL8811AU chipset as it says here:
http://www.szedup.com/product-item/wire ... /#tab-id-2

Are you saying that there are different chipsets on Edup AC1619 dongle with the same USB ID ?

It seems to be my mistake but I'm not sure since we don't have the same device.
Can you try our N2 Ubuntu image to check your dongle works on it or not?
If it work on Ubuntu image, we can try to find a root cause of the Android issue.

I can try your Ubuntu, but have to get another uSD card or eMMC, cause presently I have CoreElec on uSD (in which this adapter works pefect) and on eMMC I have your Android which I'd like to keep.

Here is the Edup dongle info collected from my Windows 10 PC:

Device description: Realtek RTL8811AU Wireless LAN 802.11ac USB 2.0 Network Adapter
Device description path: USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0811\00E04C000001

Did you install codewalker's wifi_id file properly?
If yes, show me your dmesg output from ADB shell.

Yes, I installed it properly. Will get dmesg output from ADB shell, when I get my Android back online.
In the meantime I installed "ubuntu-18.04.2-4.9-mate-odroid-n2-20190325". The Edup dongle works as expected, here is SS:

The product ID seems to be 0811 not a811.
Edit(replacing a811 with 0811) the .txt file with a plan text editor on your PC and push it into N2 again.

Well, this change SORTED my Edup WiFi dongle, it works now on Android :)

Some observations:
did not let me set fixed IP, it kept reconnecting to the router. With DHCP it connects and works OK.
With dongle connected to lower USB3.0 port closest to HDMI output I get erratic wifi 2.4GHz mouse behavior. Later I will try other ports to see if there is any difference.

Edit: powering N2 off/on sorted above mentioned mouse behaviour. Mouse and wifi work now OK

Tnx again for your kind help.

Me too :)

Do I have to keep a copy of my edited "wifi_id_list.txt" to push it after every OTA update, or is it added in new versions ?

Hi, Sholander.
We will add 0811 pid next firmware version, therefore you do not need to edit wifi_id_list.txt anymore.

Our WiFi Module 5A has the RTL8811AU( USB ID = 0bda:a811 ) chipset and it works with N2 out of the box.
https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/wifi-module-5a/

I think your adapter must have a different chipset.

would like to add this driver to our XU4 build. wondering why the chipset is not in the standard linux firmware package from git.kernel.org? Thanks!

@SlappyMcPhee,
Our XU4 Linux Kernel branch 3.10 and 4.14 both have the driver for RTL8811AU( USB ID = 0bda:a811 ) by default.
