Switching kernel from 4.9 to 5.15 is not that simple.
Consider flashing this community driven Ubuntu 22.04 image based on Kernel 5.15 after backup your important data.

Just be mindful it's an experimental work and the hardware support may not be as good as with official kernel.

What features of newer kernel you're after?

Would there be a way to just replace the kernel by building it like one would do for 4.9? Instead of reinstalling from scratch and importing a backup!

What's the output of uname -a now?
If you are able to manage to compile and kernel installation, it would be fine to replace kernel and boot up latest kernel. But what's the other issue is that most of boot configuration in boot.ini or config.ini does not work.
