Get quite a few hangs with Ubuntu Mate 18.04

Post by wallyz21 »

As of lately I have been getting quite a few hangs.

The system will hang for about 30 seconds then black screen for a few seconds before finally rebooting.

Happening about every 60-90 minutes!

Anything I can look at to start diagnosing?

Which kernel version do you use?
Any strange dmesg output?
Which applications do you run?

Keep monitoring the system resources especially DRAM memory with 'htop' output.
Also try Chromium browser to narrow down root causes.

Have monitored memory with htop and a memory monitor script and I have found nothing unusual with memory usage when the system crashes.

Always mem is low free 100-300MB, Available 2000-2500MB

It can even happen with any an empty desktop with nothing open. I'm not overclocked. Could the power supply be giving up?

Time to reinstall and get a clean build I think. Good excuse to upgrade the N2 to the 20.04 MATE image.

If you use our official 12V/2A PSU or any other reliable PSU, it must be fine.
Which PSU do you use?

There should be no power supply issue.
Please consider trying the latest Ubuntu 20.04 image.

I have now tried Ubuntu 20.04 MATE and that did not experience the problem but I only ran it for 3 days.

I'm not certain but I think I may have found the issue.

My N2 has a USB Wifi adapter the 5A.

However while it was plugged in I wasn't using it as I using using the ethernet cable directly to my router.
I have unplugged the Wifi adapter 3 days ago and haven't experienced another hang!

EDIT: Just happened again after 4 days so nothing to do with the Wifi.
